grtrans··on Google commits $1B in grants to train U.S. workers for high-tech jobs
Google hasn’t hired “the very best” for at least five to seven years now; there are plenty “average talent” employees who do their job adequately.

Mind you they do hire some of the best, but the idea that google engineers are “the best” is a myth.

grtrans··on TerrariaClone – An incomprehensible hellscape of spaghetti code
I dunno, i would call spaghetti code code with waaaay too many entangled concerns, for which this and global state definitely qualifies.

Personally i associate it with lack of abstractions, or extremely leaky abstractions.

grtrans··on Gluon – Deep Learning API from AWS and Microsoft
It’s not clear eg what use you would get from sharing a language between your model training and request processing.

> Your "refactoring" tells me that the code probably wasn't well structured in the first place

Well considering this is a realistic scenario for fallible humans, it’s still decent advice to keep your exploratory projects in python small to avoid ridiculous tech debt. It’s not quite as bad as with ruby, but it’s close.

grtrans··on Growing Up with the Odyssey
As someone who taught themselves greek to read Homer, Aristotle, and the bible, it’s not as hard as you might think. Grab a grammar book and a dictionary for the dialect and get to work! Checking with other translations is not cheating but encouraged—that’s how you learn the subtly of obstruse (to a romantic ear) greek words like sophrosyne and common idioms.

Of course, it’s an absolutely massive time commitment, but not a terrible way to spend a sunday afternoon.
