guylepage3··on Sean Connery has died
One of the most distinct voices of my lifetime and a great actor. Definitely will be missed.
guylepage3··on Metafont (1984)
This is very cool. Thanks for sharing.
guylepage3··on In NYC, almost 9 in 10 Covid-19 patients on ventilators don't make it
An article I read somewhere was suggesting that doctors should have tried using traditional antibiotics to treat patients instead of intubating them. This of course is strictly anecdotal.
guylepage3··on Jeff Bezos has returned to day-to-day management of Amazon
Maybe he should set his sites lower and get some work done to fix Amazon Fresh. I have tried to order something everyday since Mar 12 and no time slots have been available.
guylepage3··on Introducing nushell
Lately I've been paying more attention to alternative CLI tooling, extensions, etc. Our open source community uses git-flow-avh for example and it has been extremely helpful. I can't wait to try this out.
guylepage3··on Rules for Intuitive UX
A very misleading title to this article but a couple of great reminders. One thing that is somewhat missing is to always remind yourself to remove blockers of any kind for users. The easier it is to use your product, the better experience users will have.
guylepage3··on A Raspberry Pi-powered live train station sign
It would be cool to use a Split-Flap Display. like this.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=04el3LYiOaI
guylepage3··on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 pilots 'could not stop nosedive'
I’m a social capitalist. IMO, it seldom happens that the free market does not punish companies who make serious errors. For those times, logic, common sense & societal regulation should step in, punish the company with fines ratcheting up until free market clearly loses confidence.
guylepage3··on Elon Musk Settles SEC Fraud Charges
I wonder if the SEC will disclose the persons that end up receiving compensation for the $40M to be distributed amongst "harmed" investors? My hope is that sophisticated investors are excluded from the compensated group as they know how to manage and leverage risk where as the retail investor does not. The retail investor is the one who would have been harmed in this instance.
guylepage3··on Sketch.systems
As a product person. I personally feel if the designer should know how to code so they can skip this tools process. It seems to add more unnecessary complexity to the design process for those designers who know how to code and understand how to fix issues as they arise.
guylepage3··on Microsoft acquires Github
Ugh.. I feel like I've been punched in the gut.. First Sunrise. Now GitHub. I give MS 6 months to mess GitHub up or discontinue service.

Time to really look into GitLab.

guylepage3··on Dark Patterns in UI/UX Design
>You’re not designing for the company, but rather for the users who will interact with the product.

So many engineer CEO’s really need to understand this. Engineers tend to skip over the first step in this process, defining the segment or demographic, and then end up just having their design team design to meet their esthetics. I’ve seen this at so many companies.

guylepage3··on Adobe Photoshop 1.0.1 Source Code (2013)
As a long time fan of Photoshop and the Knoll brothers, this is amazing.. Going to figure out a way to pay homage to this code base. Any recommendations are welcome.
guylepage3··on A Short Introduction to the Art of Programming (1971) [pdf]
“The sole reason one likes to write is insufficient...”

Interesting that they did not seem to want to attract people who just enjoy programming..

guylepage3··on Seattle vacates hundreds of marijuana charges going back 30 years
This is one step forward in a positive direction for the US. I'm very happy to hear my neighboring country taking a more common sense approach to drugs. First Korea and now this.. What the heck is up with the world.. People are finally waking up. :)
guylepage3··on Age and High-Growth Entrepreneurship
I used to think the same way but what I have witnessed over the years is that my entrepreneur friends who are married with children tend to be just as risk taking as young single ones.

I feel entrepreneurship is a mentality. Entrepreneurs will always take risk where they see opportunity. The risk just seems to become less foolhardy as they get older. No stats on this just an observation.

guylepage3··on Coinbase Ventures
Ha. I'm waiting for the InVisitoken.
guylepage3··on Coinbase Ventures
Agreed. But they are not the first to do this.. There are a few others that did it in a short timeframe. Albeit they raised much less.
guylepage3··on CSS: The bad bits and how to avoid them
Stop using CSS and go with modular SCSS
guylepage3··on Sketch Design System 1.0
I was hearing rumors of their design system costing $15,000.
guylepage3··on Amazon, Facebook and Google can all be beaten
They definitely can be beaten but not for the reasons stated in this article. Network effects cannot be undone without a fundamental shift in their business models. Right now Facebook and Google make their money off advertising and tracking their users. Break the business model and incentivize a Network and a new Network can grow.
guylepage3··on The Internet is broken
“I thought once everybody could speak freely and exchange information and ideas, the world is automatically going to be a better place,” Evan Williams says. “I was wrong about that.”

Great quote.

guylepage3··on Ask HN: Do you use more than one browser?
I use 2 browsers. Chrome as my default and Safari as my secondary browser when requiring a secondary window
guylepage3··on Vancouver house prices are falling
I don't know where these guys got their stats but an average-priced detached home throughout Greater Vancouver costs $1,470,265.

guylepage3··on Ask HN: Restarting the YC Podcast – who would be most interesting to listen to?
- Paul Graham - Pieter Thiel - Sam Altman & Elon Musk (on OpenAI) - Albert Wenger (on Universal Capital and how we'll deal with AI without a total economic collapse)
guylepage3··on CSS Blend Mode Gotcha
Wow. Very powerful. I'll definitely have to play and test this out but if there are no limitations, I can see myself using the blend tools more often in some of my upcoming work
guylepage3··on Why there is no Facebook killer: the death of the P2P dream (2014)
Because if users own their identity and there is a new social network built upon the basis of owning your own identity and take it with you were ever you go, which is something most people want, then FB would be screwed. They would have to come up with a new revenue model to compete.

Ad blockers are becoming more and more popular. A social app built on Blockstack would prevent users from being tracked.

guylepage3··on Blockchain's Numbers Don't Add Up
Check out Blockstack.org and the new decentralized web that allows developers to build truly decentralized apps such as Twitter, Medium, Kickstarter, Reddit, etc.
guylepage3··on Blockchain's Numbers Don't Add Up
Sorry, what I was stating has nothing to do with finance at all. We've created a new web. A truly decentralized web.

The blockchain should only be used for non-financial applications.

guylepage3··on Blockchain's Numbers Don't Add Up
The blockchain is in it's infancy. It will be 30-50 years before it replaces fiat currencies, if ever at all. The value is not in the currency but in blockchain tech itself. Take Blockstack http://blockstack.org for example, we have built a new decentralized web utilizing some of the blockchain's properties. There are decentralized apps being built on Blockstack where users can access this new web via the Blockstack Open Source browser. These decentralized apps possess the ability to take out the incumbent apps we see today. Twitter, Medium, etc.
