guyzero··on DoorDash lays off 1250 employees
People have gone straight from TN status to green cards apparently but there are risks! But I have been told it has been done.
guyzero··on Ask HN: Are you a “lifer”? If so why?
Total Compensation
guyzero··on Ask HN: Will Google ever launch a successful new product again?
The feature set has not changed much since launch but it's definitely not abandoned.
guyzero··on Apple Rankings
Hit Berkeley Bowl or farmers markets which will have much fresher apples.
guyzero··on Apple Rankings
Per other commenters, Granny Smith gets downranked for being a mediocre apple for eating plain in-hand, but it's great for using in salads. We have a Granny Smith apple tree and we dry all the apples in a dehydrator and it makes the best apple chips.
guyzero··on Key staff driving Apple search engine leave to rejoin Google
The money doesn't come from search quality, it comes from selling ads and Apple is a long way away from building up ad inventory and an ad salesforce like Google's. They absolutely are making money on ads today, but they're a long way from swapping out Google.
guyzero··on Beaming solar energy from space
Clearly the answer is to run high tension cables
guyzero··on Fed increases target rate to 3.75-4.00%
I agree with your first statement but per the data on aggregate miles travelled I disagree there's actually a demand increase. Ultimately the Fed can't control either supply or demand directly but they try to indirectly control demand by increasing the cost of borrowing. Will it work? Consult your magic 8 ball.
guyzero··on Fed increases target rate to 3.75-4.00%
Gas prices are significantly higher than 2019, total vehicle miles travelled are about the same (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/M12MTVUSM227NFWA) so there must be a reduction in supply or just straight price gouging to justify the price increase.
guyzero··on Fed increases target rate to 3.75-4.00%
Per other commenters less money in the economy reduces aggregate demand. Per previous inflationary periods where interest rates were raised basically by putting people out of work.
guyzero··on Fed increases target rate to 3.75-4.00%
It's an unexpected result that shortages of core consumer goods - specifically gas and food - cause a rise in prices due to demand but this has become more decoupled from underlying input costs thus... high corporate profits in these areas. It's true that Exxon isn't any more or less rapacious than ever, but their profits are objectively much, much higher.
guyzero··on Fed increases target rate to 3.75-4.00%
By reducing demand. I guess.
guyzero··on Meta Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
She should show her confidential requirements docs on screen? Film internal meetings? it's clearly much, much worse to record her actual work. This is such a weird complaint.
guyzero··on Apple introduces Ask Apple for developers
I'm disappointed this isn't a new voice agent from Apple.
guyzero··on Ray Tracing in Notepad.exe at 30 FPS (2020)
Sadly I can only upvote you once for using "off-piste"
guyzero··on US National Debt Tops $31T
Yes, inflation is good for debt holders. Unfortunately higher inflation is usually accompanied by higher interest rates making for higher debt payments.
guyzero··on Citrix acquired and merged with Tibco for $16.5B

guyzero··on The Hiker’s Dilemma
This is a lot of words for HYOH
guyzero··on Emergency SOS via satellite is included for free with iPhone 14 Pro for 2 years
Sure. Garmin is still $5B in sales annually. Which is peanuts next to the iPhone, so you wonder why they even bother going after it. AirPods are a bigger business than that.
guyzero··on Emergency SOS via satellite is included for free with iPhone 14 Pro for 2 years
Most people in the groups you mention probably already own a dedicated emergency locator device. AAPL may very well take a lot of their business, but maybe not. An inReach is going to survive a much bigger fall than an iPhone.
guyzero··on Emergency SOS via satellite is included for free with iPhone 14 Pro for 2 years
Note that in the US SAR services are not always free and if you have an inReach or similar device you probably also need supplementary SAR insurance. It's cheap, but you still need it.
guyzero··on Emergency SOS via satellite is included for free with iPhone 14 Pro for 2 years
This raises BOM costs and has significant operating costs. How many users are likely to continue to pay for this service once the two years are up?

It's a great feature but it's far from a guaranteed money maker. This could just as likely disappear from future iPhone models.

edit: also competing dedicated devices also include the cost of SAR insurance in their monthly fees, which are significant: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/837461/pn/010-06000-SU

It starts at $15 a month but any serious user is paying more like $35-65 a month.

guyzero··on USB 4 version 2 promises 80 Gbps speeds over existing cables
They got scared by what happened to IP v5
guyzero··on Apple tells employees to work at the office three times per week starting Sept
They can mandate whatever they want but if there's another wave everyone will quite rightly stay home again. And the current wave is on the downslope, but it's far from over.
guyzero··on Google Fiber plans 5-state growth spurt, biggest since 2015
They didn't so much stop as they got stopped - incumbents fought hard to keep Google Fiber out and they won.
guyzero··on What ever happened to the neighborhood paperboy?
Yep. I was a small town paperboy until '89 and I'm not sure if my immediate successor was an adult in a car but it definitely went that way pretty quickly. It's not like it paid a lot, but then again I only worked for an hour a day - if you covered a larger area it was probably a reasonable low-paying job.
guyzero··on The Upper Middle Class Is Getting Squeezed
They mostly rely on income from their labour, which makes them some strata of middle class. A law firm partner who doesn't do any work could be upper class, but those new law school grads are definitely not upper class.
guyzero··on The Upper Middle Class Is Getting Squeezed
But doctors and lawyers are upper-middle aren't they?
guyzero··on The Upper Middle Class Is Getting Squeezed
"They define upper-middle as a household earning between 75k-127k."

I get that the SF Bay Area is its own little universe, but what? You're borderline homeless on that income.

guyzero··on Carmakers feel chip crisis easing
For new car dealerships I think the reason is mostly just historical precedent but much like how movie theater owners make their money by selling popcorn and all the ticket sales go back to the studio, car dealerships make their real money through service and the car sales are often a wash.
