h4rrison··on Should Quadrotors All Look Like This?
It varies hugely depending on the axis of acceleration, so given the manoeuvres in the video I opted for the lower end of the spectrum, which is probably a more realistic estimate than 20Gs.
h4rrison··on Should Quadrotors All Look Like This?
Seems you're right, though I think it would depend on the rigidity of the rotor with respect to the body of the helicopter.
h4rrison··on Should Quadrotors All Look Like This?
Agreed, though the one leg analogy would more accurately be hanging from one arm, since the lift is provided from above.
h4rrison··on Should Quadrotors All Look Like This?
A cursory glance around the internet suggests that these things are capable of 20G manoeuvres (!), far in excess of the human maximum of 5-10G (depending on axis of acceleration).

Agreed. As another example, Singapore has such problems with birth rate that they need to have huge immigration just to maintain a stable population.

There is some irony in this now being the top comment...
h4rrison··on We paid $634 million for the Obamacare sites and all we got was this lousy 404
As a non-USA HN'er, I'm not sure I agree with this as a perfect example of the case against a national health insurance system. I'm not sure any democratic country with a population of over 300 million people could smoothly implement such an enormous project without some teething problems. And 20 years from now, when your grandkids don't have to worry about health insurance, the world isn't laughing at your health system, and everyone has forgotten how some menus didn't work on a website that went over budget, I bet you'll be thankful someone finally did try to implement something big.

h4rrison··on Show HN: Tutoring startup in Perth, Australia
Thanks for the feedback!

We did suspect that we weren't making it obvious enough that we were Perth only for now, so it's good to get some confirmation.

We have gone back and forth on the money issue so many times, and can't quite work out the best way to incorporate it, which is mainly why we haven't as yet. The solutions to the online payment problem really aren't great in Australia when compared to the likes of Stripe as well..

The suggestion about incorporating music tutoring is a great one. We've added some music subjects, and will give some thought as to how to advertise to that market.

It would be good to catch up and talk education/technology, how should I contact you?

Cheers :)

I'm guessing you lived in Perth at some stage? These things live pretty exclusively on Rottnest Island: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quokka
h4rrison··on Licenses Over Data: A Case Study with Github v BitBucket
You can't deny that the wording is far more convoluted and vague, despite the precise legal implications.
h4rrison··on Confirmed: The NSA is Spying on Millions of Americans
I will never understand the inherent distrust America seems to have in their government. Every time a document like this is released, the logic is to assume that the document applies to all Verizon customers (which it does not), then to assume that all telecom companies have been given similar documents, then to assume that the government actually acts on this and randomly spies on people, then to assume that they are using that data for malicious purposes, and suddenly the government is evil.

Perhaps the only thing they use the data for (if indeed it exists) it to programatically uncover underground pedophilia rings? Perhaps they use it to pre-empt mass shootings? Perhaps the country with the most powerful government in the world should have a little trust in it now and then?

h4rrison··on Pin Payments is Australia’s first all-in-one online payment API
As someone who lives in Perth, I can concur with the ridiculous cost of living here at the moment, and am also surprised that this seems to have been developed at least partly here. However, the meetup/tech/startup scene is developing here (albeit slowly). Check out some spacecubed events when you're next here.
h4rrison··on Ask HN: Planning to work in London
Thanks for the advice! I've read some horror stories from back in 08/09, so it's nice to hear something positive.
h4rrison··on Do Not Type "File:///" in OS X
It's definitely a spell check bug, I've got that feature turned off (always hated it) and none of this is doing anything for me.
h4rrison··on Heroku shouldn’t be sandbagging paying customers who have low-traffic apps
Having said this, 30% of $108 is only $32.40, which still doesn't reach the price of another dyno.
h4rrison··on Heroku shouldn’t be sandbagging paying customers who have low-traffic apps
Regardless of his slight misunderstanding of the technical side of things, he is correct when he says that you can be paying over $100 a month for a service and still be subject to dyno idling, which does seem pretty ridiculous, especially since Heroku takes a 30% cut of all add-on revenue (https://addons.heroku.com/provider/resources/HerokuAddonsLic...)
h4rrison··on InstallMonetizer quietly starts editing website, privacy policy
Yep this is blocked under "Pay-to-Surf" at the company where I work. Not sure what security provider they use, but this isn't looking good for a YC backed startup...
h4rrison··on Show HN: News/YC - HN Reader for iOS
It's pretty good. A few user interface issues:

- The "Go To Comments" and "Return To Stories" buttons aren't styled as buttons, so it's not immediately obvious that they do anything.

- The gray bar at the top underneath the orange should really be transparent I think, it makes the top bar feel very thick and a bit clunky.

- There should be some indication that an article is loading when the UIWebView pops up. Users might not have Wifi, and it could be some time before any part of the page is rendered.

- I think the modal UIWebView should probably rise up past the top navigation bar. When you're reading an article there really isn't much need for it to be there, and every extra pixel is precious on a phone.

Nice app though overall.
