hackerlytest··on Mercedes-Benz commits to bringing back physical buttons
I really like what Jony Ive did with Ferrari. It’s the perfect blend of digital and analog instruments. High quality material and finishing.

Many of these German car companies are following what sells well in Chinese markets, more and more screens. IMO, nothing beats the feeling and assurance of tactile buttons/toggles/knobs.

Huh, I also thought the same
hackerlytest··on Bangladesh imposes curfew after dozens killed in anti-government protests
Some context: Students are protesting to reform the quota system. Which was abolished in 2018 after protest but recently brought back again. The Quota system basically reserves 56% of public sector jobs, i.e. 30% to relatives of war veteran.

The war happened in 1971. To get public job and avail the quota, it must be their 3rd or 4th generation now. Which is plain unfair.

But it’s not about that, the gov loyalists and their goons fake these veteran certificates to land these jobs. Bangladesh is one of the most corrupted countries in the world after all. So real veteran relatives are seldom the beneficiary.

These students just wanted to reform this system. But our fascist gov and their goons used force and killed 50+ unarmed students until yesterday (3 from my alma mater alone.) This was completely unprovoked and unnecessary. Basically any forms of dissent have been dealt with this way since 2009. No one can criticize or protest the big brother.

We have a dictatorship since 2009. People are angry - due to corruption, inflation, joblessness and tyranny. This is just some outburst of it.

When you see the videos how the police are killing teenagers and university students in the road - our future generation - no one can tolerate this.

Now the fascist gov has closed all internet and phone connection to outside world. I can't contact my family anymore. I don't know their well being.

There is of course more to it. But this is the summary.

hackerlytest··on Show HN: MeiliFinder – a beautiful MeiliSearch CLI client built with Rust
I am glad you liked it. :)
hackerlytest··on Munich train departures CLI app written in Rust
Hi I made the CLI tool,

I wanted to have a little display in my room that would show the latest departures of trains and buses in my nearest station. I thought, I would just make a CLI tool first and then can make another app for an arduino or esp32.

This just mimics the departure display Munich stations have in their premises. As a fan of CLI tool and rust, I just made this for fun. :)

hackerlytest··on Show HN: Trilby for Hacker News – An Elegant Way to Experience HN on Android
I come from JS world, so React Native was the first option that came to mind.

I forgot to wrap that screen in scroll view as I thought it wouldn't be too long. I will fix it in the next version, thanks :)

I may put the apk on apkmirror, as for f-droid, I'm not yet ready to make it OSS. But possibly in the future as I clean the code a bit.

I hope you also give Trilby a try. I hope you like it. I'm always open to feedback and criticisms. :)

hackerlytest··on Show HN: Trilby for Hacker News – An Elegant Way to Experience HN on Android
I will think about it. Maybe posting it on apkmirror is a good way to do it? As for f-droid, I am not yet ready to OSS it, but it's definitely not off the table.

I wish you give my app a try. :)

Thank you for your input. I was also thinking about implementing bookmarking feature locally. But seeing HN has its own 'favorite' feature, I decided to skip it.

This can be doable. Since HN doesn't provide an API for it, I have to parse the webpage and collect the ids for the favorited stories from there. If I get more users, I will certainly implement more features like this.

My end goal is to have maximum feature parity with the website. :)

hackerlytest··on U.S. science no longer leads the world. Here’s how nation should respond
Anti science and anti intellectualism are getting confused with being woke and anti establishment.

Not surprised at all at this result.

Didn't know there was a style called that. Nice find.

Maybe Linus can also present the idea to them. Since he's now a shareholder and possibly their most popular owner.
hackerlytest··on Adblocking people and non-adblocking people experience a different web
I sympathize with small creators and sites that rely on these kinds of money and are not obtrusive. It's just a test though. I will probably be back on adblocker by default.

Thanks. Seems to be back for me.

That's actually a pretty good strategy and I am inclined to try it.
