hackernudes··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
What about when the US dollar was backed by gold? Were there no houses or businesses?

If I need a house today I'll buy it. I might not invest in real estate or stocks as much if my currency will be worth more tomorrow but I'll still buy stuff I need or want badly enough.

hackernudes··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Me too. I have a basic Google One account which is now called "Google AI Plus" and it says "Get 2x higher usage access than Free". The Google AI Pro plan says "Get 4x higher usage access than Free" (from https://gemini.google/subscriptions/).

I tried antigravity with Gemini 3.8 Flash High. I used a prompt similar to what I use with Codex and Claude Code and it used up my weekly quota in 10 minutes without stopping or giving me anything useful at all.

I have the $20 plan on Anthropic and OpenAI and frequently use up the five hour window but usually get at least 2-3 hours of useful work from similar prompts. The prompt was about an embedded firmware designing a bluetooth protocol for a gamepad (the firmware was already quite mature and this is not a large change).

I was super excited to sign up for the Pro plan and compare it until I read the limits so now I didn't even bother because I'm convinced it will be trash. And just for the record I see "Gemini 4 Argon" available in my antigravity install.

hackernudes··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
I've heard this argument for AGI or SI. If the model gets smart enough then they won't have to sell inference, they can make money by doing any valuable thing.
hackernudes··on OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud
But x.ai also hosts Grok? Why would google stop developing their own models? I think you're right that Google will try to make money from their infrastructure (that's basically what Google Cloud is too).
hackernudes··on Google open-sources TorchTPU, a native PyTorch back end for TPUs
I think the commenter was asking if Google sells TPU chip hardware to use outside of Google's own infrastructure and cloud.
hackernudes··on Linux 7.3
It also supports RDMA (sometimes called "SMB Direct").
hackernudes··on What I self-host
I agree. What is stopping me is primarily the metadata stuff. For example, Sonarr runs a closed-source service called Skyhook which exists to make efficient use of TheTVDB. Since Sonarr is free open source software maybe they don't have to pay (looking at https://www.thetvdb.com/api-information and https://opencollective.com/sonarr).

My dream app is split into two parts. One that serves podcasts, music, books (with OPDS so I can browse my library with KOReader), tv, movies, other multimedia (youtube, whatever else). The other handling the metadata APIs and downloading files from different sources (torrent trackers, torrent DHT, nntp, etc...). Sort of like uber-Jellyfin + uber-Arr.

I guess I can probably get a personal API key for TheTVDB, etc... and develop my own sort of proxy and it wouldn't be so bad. Hmm...

hackernudes··on Using AI to reverse engineer hardware
Just release it under a pseudonym. The worst they will do is force it off GitHub! Don't redistribute the firmware files if you're really concerned. I am also sort of struggling with this idea so I get where you're coming from.

hackernudes··on I turned my unused Kindle into a photo frame with GPT-6 Astra
A little late and I can't remember the full details, but I did go through kindlemodding dot org. I suspect initially I couldn't get WinterBreak2 working on an unregistered kindle. IIRC you have to reboot after setting up wifi to skip the registration and get to the browser, but I didn't realize that at first.

I ended up installing LanguageBreak but it took many attempts and many many reboots of the kindle into demo mode which takes forever. Even now searching how to jailbreak an unregistered kindle Paperwhite of my generation (can't remember off the top of my head) top results point to using LanguageBreak.

Once I got WinterBreak2 installed it was pretty easy. The site mentions a lot of stuff about package managers that seem to not exist at all which was confusing.

Now I'm happily booting straight into KOReader using an init script that I wrote that is gated on the presence of a file in the USB storage area.

hackernudes··on I turned my unused Kindle into a photo frame with GPT-6 Astra
I'm a seasoned embedded engineer and it took me hours to figure what the "right" jailbreak was and how it worked. In the end it was easy to accomplish but as usual the documentation is abysmal.

I sometimes catch myself saying "we" when prompting AI so it really doesn't bother me to see this language being used. But I concede it can sound jarring or hubristic.

hackernudes··on I paid people to try and follow my README
Yeah. It was infuriating trying to figure out Minecraft Java mods because they are all like that.
hackernudes··on Why are coding agents so dumb?
I've been thinking an AI could be trained to bid on jobs. Probably too many real world problems to make it practical, but I can't get it out of my head.
hackernudes··on Background Passive FTP with No GUI Control Survives Apple Store DFU
Rambling paranoid incoherent article. This person is either not technical at all or is having delusions.

The only screenshot of an actual error is about "dsldevice.domain_not_set.invalid" which is apparently some crappy ATT fiber router thing when Internet is not up.

There is no "background ftp" going on. Passive ftp is a way to do the FTP protocol and it makes sense to be on by default.

Pretty confusing, there is a Cisco Antares small language model... https://blogs.cisco.com/ai/introducing-antares-the-most-effi...

Guess everything is just going to be named after stars for awhile.

hackernudes··on I'm being cyberattacked by Tesla, Inc
If you host a webserver on the internet it is normal to receive that kind of traffic all the time. Source: I host a server on my Comcast connection.
hackernudes··on Stopping the smart TV from being used against you
I don't actually believe the claims of this blog. A driver for a monitor from Windows update allowing mcafee antivirus and/or other programs to be installed automatically? I think more details should be shared. Also contains a long rant about EDID which I think is unwarranted.
hackernudes··on Show HN: Laptop is the last place your secrets are still in plaintext
Technically this one is piping it to tar? But I agree with the sentiment.
hackernudes··on Maximizing the value of your Claude Code sessions
In this case there is a two phase staleness check. The bot marks it as stale and it is correct to "bump" it if you think it is still important. The nixpkgs repo works the same way. I think it backs off from adding stale again as it gets bumped.

I'm not saying it's a perfect solution but for projects that deal with large amounts of issues it's workable.

I'm guessing this is here because it was featured on an episode of Beef Season 2 from Netflix.

Quantenna used 1.1.1.1 for RPC to their wifi chip in their SDK by default. Should not have been exposed to global routing but of course people screwed that up.

hackernudes··on Measuring Input Latency on Linux: X11 vs. Wayland, VRR, and DXVK
I don't think there was ever a design to be one frame behind.

Compositing requires the GPU to do some extra work to draw the frame to be presented. This typically takes very little time (much less than a full frame period). Additionally, most wayland compositors will bypass that extra step if an application is full screen (wlroots calls it "direct scanout").

Also some wayland compositors keep track of timing and delay the final composition until right before it is time to present the frame in order to reduce latency.
