hackney··on The enormous problems with using the war on terror as the basis for gun control
I am a little uptight lately and do apologize for bruising anyone's ego. I will strive to comment much less if at all.
hackney··on What's your favorite children's book?
I read so many books as a child it is impossible to recommend any. I did read a book recently titled 'Absolute Zero Gravity' (Betsy Devine & Joel Cohen) Science Jokes, Quotes and Anecdotes. It is informative, historical, educational, and truly fascinating to read. For a child this can really awaken their cognitive imagination. Fiction-wise I would leave to the child to decide as that list is truly endless. The Witcher series by Sapkowski I couldn't hardly put down (the movie is a complete FAIL). One other I rather liked is titled 'The Eerie Adventures of the Lycanthrope Robinson Crusoe' by Defoe, Lovecrart, & Clines.
hackney··on The DAO Was Not Hacked
Interesting analysis on DAO, the virtual company that apparently thought it could fly but instead fell off a cliff. I like the premised intent of digital currency. All currency is digital (read imaginary) in fact, but the geniuses who headed this up did not realize that security is not just a byword for hacking/privacy concerns. If you stick your wallet out you better make damn sure you don't end up buying everybody's lunch. Personally, they should 'rollback', as long as their is no animosity. Again, all 'currency' is man-made-imaginary. So I say live and learn and keep pushing forward. What do I know though? Maybe these guys can afford to give their money away but that is definitely not agreeable.
hackney··on Microsoft claims Edge is the most power efficient browser
And they fail to add the glaring fact it only runs on windows 10. Talk about a skewed perspective. Even if I could run it in 7 I wouldn't.
hackney··on Ask HN: How do you keep your (always online) Windows pc safe?
The best way would be to have a hardware firewall isolating the actual pc.
hackney··on Show HN: New calendar app idea
Whatever. I got your email and it gave me a playstore link. Forget it.
hackney··on Reimagining the future of routers
I am nowhere near skilled enough to even understand the majority. Shoots, I just installed my very first personal home router. Also, I might add, this reminds me of the Intel management engine, which to my eye is like a router built-in in some ways.
hackney··on Why the US never adopted the metric system
I read that but the high tech toolers of today are metric understandably. My point was that the industry may have balked but the populace just don't care enough. It's not like the tech industry makes the rules.
hackney··on Why Do We Sleep, Anyway?
Exactly. Good question.
hackney··on There are now 234 pregnant women in the US with confirmed Zika virus
More clearly I meant the right choice, but still a choice.
hackney··on Hack the Pentagon
Apparently when the hacking began it took all of 13 mins. to find the first hole. Sounds like fun actually.
hackney··on [dead]
Bummer. He was perfect in that role. God bless him.
hackney··on Tinnitus in relation to neck/head muscle tension
This is akin to: scientists now know the head is actually connected to the rest of the body via the neck. I had trouble with my right ear for approx. 5yrs. Finally went to to the dr. because it got to the point the headaches made me want to shoot myself. Apparently the stapia (the thing that vibrates) became infected and essentially was dying inside my head. They replaced it with a titanium one and the only difference is the headaches stopped. I cannot stress enough how important it is to protect the health of ones body, even if it means physically moving to a healthier environ.
hackney··on Bought and returned set of WiFi home security cameras; can now watch new owner
Sounds like the security part is sorely lacking. That and someone needs to get a life.
hackney··on A Meth Addict Gets Sober in Orange County Community Court
In all honesty, the fact that he had been an upright taxpaying citizen to begin with... good job, house, car, friends etc., was an excellent incentive to break the habit. My stepbrother is in his late 30's, has 5 illegitimate kids, no job, no car, and has never held a driver's license. Oh and he's a heroin addict and all his friends are meth heads. Why doesn't he quit? He's lived in the same house virtually his entire life, in and out of jail and prison, and his dad essentially allows him to live there as a daily fuckup. DeLancey Street is an excellent court appointed 2yr alternative to the courts themselves. You can also just walk or drive in right off the street if you have the balls. Problem is you have to willingly enter it (the hard part), have no outstanding tickets/court appointments, and show up sober. Even so, I've seen guys with 4 years under their belt, walk out the door and OD within a week. It really boils down to the individul themselves and the choices they make. Guys with 30+ years of addiction do not normally survive it. It just eats them alive, if not slowly.
hackney··on Why Do We Pay Pure Mathematicians? (2015)
Because math is a universal (no pun intended) language.
hackney··on Ask HN: Recommended Home Content Management System
I can only recommend DocFetcher. Crossplatform, open source, and portable. Requires java. http://docfetcher.sourceforge.net/en/index.html
hackney··on PayPal Demands That Seafile Monitor Customers Uploaded Files
Fuck paypal.
hackney··on There are now 234 pregnant women in the US with confirmed Zika virus
To me this simply raises the case of why abortion should always be a choice.
hackney··on Words of Obama’s Father Still Waiting to Be Read by His Son
Are we referring to reading aloud? As his son I am quite sure he doesn't necessarily need to read anything. I think this was hashed before right after the president came into office and there was the uproar over his birth cert.
hackney··on Why the US never adopted the metric system
I think a bit of it has to do with the manufacturing sector. The 'industrial revolution' in it's beginnings was quite crude really. Today's space age technology was essentially led by America, and that in and of itself, I believe to be the contributing factor in our adherence to an essentially non-metric system. Take the term TITS for ex.: Total instrument tolerance supplement. Even though the tech industry is primarily metric, the term itself alludes to getting the absolute maximum precision from whatever you are using to measure with regardless of the scale.
hackney··on Ask HN: Will someone replace Sunrise calendar?
Seems that MS taking it over last year was it's death knell. I assume Outlook is not an option. It's as if MS took it over just to gut it. First I've heard of it.. too bad. They have only been around since 2013.
hackney··on Fulck – Top 1000 Websites in One Place
Makes for an interesting homepage if nothing else.
hackney··on Open-source geo is really something right now
Interesting. The post references sources such as Mapzen which allows you to extract portions of data for peculiar needs. Mapzen also provides an api for turn by turn navigation and there is a plugin to use it on a web based map. I use DeLorme's street atlas on my tablet. It works great and is inexpensive. Just don't bother with any map pack additions as when you try to download more than a few square miles, delorme then promptly throttles you to 1990 dialup speeds. Viking (sourceforge) is also an option but there is no real time gps with windows.
hackney··on Emotional toll of reporting the refugee crisis surprises news organisations
It's difficult to just stand by and watch when as a human being one knows we are better than this. This is also a prime example that money does not change shit. In fact, if obsessed on, which is primarily how all this crap came to be, it makes things worse. My suggestion is to bail out some more bankers. That will fix everything.
hackney··on Watching the Reddit readers falling
Reddit, imo, is a joke for the simple(ton) reason that 90+% of new posts are nothing more than stupid questions. I created an acct. for the sole purpose of filtering the garbage, which apparently is the majority of the content.
hackney··on Humans Who See Time (2010)
Time is not seen. However one does, or does not, spatially relate the pittance of that which we call memory is hardly what could be construed as 'seeing time'. Try light from the circular construct that is the surrounding universe and then you will get a perfect picture of time. I've witnessed it and it is a mindblower to say the least.
hackney··on Secret Service Employees Punished For Illegally Accessing Congressman's Data
The only thing secret about their service is how stupid these people really are. It's unfortunate that instead of taking healthy criticism from another US citizen, they instead chose to be vindictively juvenile. Real men don't hide from the truth. Not surprised, unfortunately.
hackney··on Tesla Logs Show That Model X Driver Hit the Accelerator
I was not referring to the difference between auto and manual but the fact that supposedly, I don't own one, the model x has but one foot pedal. And that being said, why remove the 2 pedal design when that has worked forever? Prius's also have regenerative braking and they kept the std. 2 foot pedal design TG.
hackney··on Reimagining the future of routers
If the 'thread' applies to rethinking routers then I have every right to have posted what I have. Seems you are the one that wants to make an argument while I was making my own personal suggestion. Instead of assuming that you are smart while I am not, I suggest you let it go.
