hakkoru··on Exapunks (2018)
Same, I played SpaceChem in high school and it captivated me. A lot of my solutions were unoptimized sync monstrosities and the boss battles filtered me pretty hard, but man it was satisfying to figure out a solution and just watch it create the molecules. The music was amazing too, it was on my study playlist all through university.
hakkoru··on Warm up your MacBook (2019)
I always enjoyed using the power brick to warm up
hakkoru··on Drop, formerly Massdrop, ends most collaborations and rebrands under Corsair
Same, still use my pocket knife that I bought off Massdrop 12 years ago.
hakkoru··on How kernel anti-cheats work
I think from a purely technical viewpoint, cheaters will always have the advantage since they control the machine the game and anti-cheat is running on. Anti-cheat just has to keep the barrier high enough so regular players don't think the game is infested with cheaters.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: Favorite Non-Spammy iPhone Games?
Baba is You! Really fun and unique puzzle game
hakkoru··on A 26,000-year astronomical monument hidden in plain sight (2019)
Heh, a group of friends and I also visited the Hoover Dam while we were in Vegas for DEF CON one year. Was a really cool experience for sure.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: What's your dock setup for your work laptop?
I've got a CalDigit TS4 that I connect to my Macbook Pro. Connects to a 4K 120Hz monitor, mouse, keyboard, wired ethernet, hard drive reader (not always connected), external blu-ray drive, and DAC. Works perfectly.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: Should account creation/origin country be displayed on HN profiles?
I used to post on a forum that did this, as well as showing the OS and browser you were posting from. Some users would be funny and modified their user agent so that it said they posted from a Wii.
hakkoru··on Computer science courses that don't exist, but should (2015)
My university offered a Linux Kernel elective one semester. I really wanted to take it but it was scheduled during one of my TA shifts
hakkoru··on Offline card payments should be possible no later than 1 July 2026
Heh, in 2014 I remember taking a taxi that only accepted card using an imprinter, which was unfortunate because I had just gotten a new card and the numbers weren't embossed. He had to drive me to a gas station to get cash from an ATM.
hakkoru··on No more data centers: Ohio township pushes back against influx of Amazon, others
I've never experienced it but I've been told that if an emergency responder needs to enter an area where classified information is stored you let them in, escort them, and security will debrief them and have them sign an NDA after the fact if they saw any classified information.
hakkoru··on Moonbase Alpha: That time NASA made a meme video game
This video (on top of stuff like YouTube Poops) did an insane amount of damage to my sense of humor growing up.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: Where are the Mac ergonomic keyboards?
I've not used their ergonomic keyboards, but Keychron seems to make them and includes Mac keycaps + compatibility.
hakkoru··on Comet open source remote KVM from GL-iNet
>The downside is that I can't shut it down remotely without knowing when exactly to also turn off the plug. I could create some automation, but it takes about 2 seconds being off before turning on again.

Huh, I would have expected the BIOS to not do that if it detected a graceful shutdown (or at least have a longer grace period).

hakkoru··on Comet open source remote KVM from GL-iNet
I just recently converted my gaming PC to a game streaming system. I considered getting a PiKVM for power/resolving issues remotely but I ended up going with Wake-on-LAN. Though setting it up was a hassle.

If you just need power control and your motherboard supports it, I've seen that some people use smart plugs and enable a setting in their BIOS that turns on the computer whenever it detects power.

hakkoru··on Ask HN: Custom domain name for personal email?
I was able to get "<full name>.com" so I'm using that. Though obviously it might be taken if you have a common full name.

>Bonus points if I can share the domain with family members for their use too.

Maybe "the<lastname>family.com"? Or something similar.

hakkoru··on Ask HN: How do you organize work and personal computers at your home office?
I put a second desk in my office. One for my work laptop, the other for my personal desktop. I roll my chair between the two if I need a quick non-work browsing break.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: How do you like to be shown appreciation at work?
At my job we can either get paid hours worked overtime or "bank" those hours to use as PTO later in the year. Unused banked time at the end of the year gets paid out. I've (thankfully) never had to work overtime but it's a pretty awesome perk that more companies should do.
hakkoru··on Contiki – OS for networked, memory-constrained systems
In my networking class in college, our final project was to create a location sensing mesh network of devices running Contiki. The devices would receive a ping from a beaconing device and we had to locate it. We only had to worry about two axes, but the walls still made things difficult. It was a pretty fun project! It made me really interested in networking stuff.

I wish I still had the course material and code but unfortunately I lost the laptop it was on.

hakkoru··on Ask HN: Has anyone worked at the US National Labs before?
No, a company or organization must sponsor your clearance. You cannot start the process on your own.
hakkoru··on Micron picks Syracuse for computer chip plant that would bring up to 9k jobs
My favorite is near where I grew up - Versailles, Kentucky. Pronounced ver-SAILS.
hakkoru··on The Touhou PC-98 Restoration Project
I've never played Touhou because I don't really like bullet hells, but the music from Touhou is just so dang good. I usually listen to the OST or (instrumental) fan arrangements while I work. My current favorites are Kuroneko Lounge's house set arrangements:

House set of Subterranean Animism: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bycuWJH2sYw

House set of Phantasmagoria of Flower View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLgMmoiR5fA

hakkoru··on Ask HN: How did you find your current job?
For my previous job I talked to an engineer who was doing recruiting at my university's job fair. A week later I had an interview, and a week after the interview I had an offer.

For my current job the same engineer I talked to (who was now a co-founder at a startup) contacted me over LinkedIn asking about getting lunch. I got lunch with him, and I had an offer later that day.

hakkoru··on Hack a satellite
I think it's its own thing now. Last year the organizers were at DEF CON and showed off the satellite for the finals and had a few talks, but the actual competition was in December. I assume the same thing will happen at this year's DEF CON.
hakkoru··on Hack a satellite
Our team has qualified for the Hack-a-Sat finals three years in a row. I wasn't a part of the first year but was a part of last year and this year. Last year's finals didn't go super well for us, but we're hoping to do better this year.
hakkoru··on The Plastic Paradise of Tokyo’s Famous Kitchen Town
Last time I went to Tokyo I bought some plastic food as ornaments for my desk at work. I wanted a huge beer mug but that ran like 9000 yen, so I got a smaller beer glass. It's very realistic looking - it has a foam head and it even has fake condensation on the glass. At my previous job I freaked out a few managers who thought it was real.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: Can you program without an Internet connection?
Depends on what you mean by "without an Internet connection". If you mean that the machine that you use to develop isn't connected to the Internet, then totally. I've been doing that for the past 4 years. If you mean never touching the Internet while programming, even on a different machine, then I'd be a lot less effective. I could probably still do it, but I'd need searchable docs for everything.
hakkoru··on Ask HN: Company wants to isolate corporate network from the Internet
Most of the time when I've had to work on an air-gapped network, I was also provided with a second computer connected to the Internet. I found that to be a good compromise, though getting small code snippets or scripts onto the air-gapped network was a pain since I had to type the whole thing or bug IT to transfer it.

I say most of the time, since I once had to work in a very high-security environment with no Internet-connected computers in the area. I had to leave the secure area to look up things on my phone. It was a nightmare.

hakkoru··on The #1 Office Perk? Natural Light
It can be hard to avoid if you're renting a space and you can't afford to be picky.
hakkoru··on The #1 Office Perk? Natural Light
I work in a SCIF. The most natural light I get at my desk is the sun peeking out of the blinds in the morning. In addition, we keep most of the lights off, for that underground bunker aesthetic I'm assuming. One of the SCIFs here doesn't even have windows.

I don't mind it that much, and I usually leave work while the sun is still out. I can see some people having an issue with it, however.
