hakrgrl··on Green card seekers must leave U.S. to apply, Trump administration says
Why does the US have to offer jobs to the whole world? People flood US borders like it's a magnet sucking them in and cry when they can't stay. If it's so exploitive why don't people stay in their own country or go somewhere else?
hakrgrl··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
The amount of coordination it takes to release these files, coupled with the incompetence of government.

The prosaic explanation is the more likely one, meaning the events are unrelated.

hakrgrl··on US Government releases first batch of UAP documents and videos
Galileo's heliocentric model

Hand washing prevents illness

COVID came from a lab, not a wet market

Hunter Biden laptop was real

And then a counter example of something broadly accepted but untrue. The humoral theory and blood letting, practiced for thousands of years. This is what killed George Washington.

hakrgrl··on Bun is being ported from Zig to Rust
People are asking why they would switch from zig to rust. I wonder the opposite: why would anyone would use zig over rust?
hakrgrl··on Joby kicks off NYC electric air taxi demos with historic JFK flight
Isn't it? Look up the California high speed rail. There is massive corruption, incompetence, and red tape.
hakrgrl··on Joby kicks off NYC electric air taxi demos with historic JFK flight
This argument always comes up. "Why not public transit? It's so efficient, look at country X". Well, country X has people who respect public property and are orderly, so they can have nice things.

The US is filled with people who don't. And who do drugs. And who rob. So people retreat to places like a Joby aircraft or self driving Waymo, which don't have those issues.

hakrgrl··on Trump fires NSF's oversight board
Trump is a disruptor. I am interested to see how this plays out and whether he replaces anyone. One thing I've learned since COVID is, unfortunately, to be more skeptical of medical authorities. We were lied to in so many ways and all the while forced to "trust the science" and so called experts. But they were caught either wrong or lying way too many times. So I am not going to assume outright all the people he fired are perfectly honest or unbiased scientists, and I hope Trump has a plan going forward. TDS is a thing, and anything he does is met with resistance. He could cure cancer and people would still be mad at him somehow.
hakrgrl··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
> Maduro was president of a sovereign country.

Since 2013, Venezuela has been suffering a socioeconomic crisis under Maduro. He stole the last two elections and remained in power even though he had not legitimately won.

Numerous international bodies and human rights organizations have found that Nicolás Maduro and his government committed extensive human rights violations. These violations have been ongoing since at least 2014 as part of a systematic plan to repress dissent. State security forces and allied armed groups (colectivos) have been implicated in thousands of unlawful or politically motivated killings and arbitrary arrests of protesters, opposition leaders, and perceived critics.

Immediately after the latest presidential election, at least 24 people died as a result of the government’s repression of protests against the appointment of Nicolás Maduro. Most of these killings could amount to extrajudicial executions. Two of the victims were children.

hakrgrl··on Israel escalates attacks on medics in Lebanon with deadly 'quadruple tap'
Because it's not intellectually interesting and because it falls in the off-topic category based on the guidelines of this site.

> If they'd cover it on TV news, it's probably off-topic

People don't come to Hacker News to talk about wars. They come to get away from wars.

hakrgrl··on EFF is leaving X
Agreed, Twitter suspended accounts for "misgendering" and sharing Hunter Biden laptop stories. It was a bubble that protected leftists.

X, however, is pro free speech. Everyone is platformed. Everyone can discuss. Everyone can debate. It is a bubble that protects free speech from censorship. The left struggles to understand it and retreats to bluesky.

hakrgrl··on EFF is leaving X
Your line of reasoning has been attempted already, nearly verbatim. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47712820

Why would a Nazi go to Israel, meet with Netanyahu, visit Auschwitz and light a candle in solidarity, and generally support Jews? It makes no sense.

People just hate Elon and call everyone a Nazi. It is not an accusation that is taken seriously anymore.

hakrgrl··on EFF is leaving X
It is a Rorschach test.

I see an awkward attempt of someone with Asperger's saying "my heart goes out to you", which is what he said while making the gesture.

You apparently saw a Nazi salute.

Given he has no other Nazi tendencies before or since, I did not see a Nazi salute.

In fact he visited Israel after Oct 7, a decidedly non-Nazi thing to do. Netanyahu himself praised Elon and said he is being smeared.

hakrgrl··on EFF is leaving X
Pattern recognition - people who are on bsky are overly concerned with pronouns and extreme leftist ideology and/or extreme hate for trump. There is no actual discourse. Just a bubble where there is no tolerance for debate or difference of opinion.
hakrgrl··on EFF is leaving X
He did not do a Nazi salute. That is propaganda from legacy media. He has never even said anything remotely Nazi-like. He is pro free speech, pro humanity, pro USA.
hakrgrl··on EFF is leaving X
Twitter, before Elon, was the company that literally banned your account for sharing the hunter Biden laptop story. That story was purported to be a "conspiracy theory" but was actually true. And people were locked out of their account for sharing it. That is true fascism.
hakrgrl··on Enabling Codex to Analyze Two Decades of Hacker News Data
Why do you say that?
hakrgrl··on Enabling Codex to Analyze Two Decades of Hacker News Data
I noticed some topics and comments that were usually in violation of HN guidelines are no longer flagged, and discourse decays into reddit-like jabs and echo chambers. Only a small percent, but still, more than the previous 0% I was accustomed to.

Would be interesting to see how many comments violate the guidelines over time. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

hakrgrl··on Enabling Codex to Analyze Two Decades of Hacker News Data
That last chart showing the average comment length shows a clear negative downtrend, especially in recent months. I wonder why that is.
hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
We got a nuclear deal Iran violated so badly that we had to take military action.
hakrgrl··on Ninja is a small build system with a focus on speed
Getting builds to work was some of the most tedious, least interesting work. It is so satisfying to watch the agent try 4 different things and magically go on its way. No more makefile syntax searches or cmake hell.

hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
I don't even know who that is
hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
> is there any plan to do this differently to those expensive failures?

Why are you asking me? You can listen to the secretary of war (a veteran of those wars) and the president describe their strategy themselves. They are extremely transparent.

hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
The implication being what? "What about Iran" as if I don't think killing schoolchildren is terrible and shouldn't happen?

You missed the entire point of my comment: to us it's a tragedy. To them it's a strategy. That's why we're bombing them in the first place. They are commiting genocide.

hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Skeptical of what, exactly?
hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
"reality and sanity"? The reality is the US gave them cash to improve their living standards and enrich their country, not their uranium.

With that money they chose to massacre their own people and fund terrorism across the region.

hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Was I not clear?

"I'm glad someone is finally doing something about it rather than sending palettes of cash on an jet to radical Muslims."

Point is you can mock Trump with your minesweeper game and jeer from the sidelines, but it's a better policy than sending bad guys money.

hakrgrl··on Hormuz Minesweeper – Are you tired of winning?
Or machine gun defence when you're protecting tens of thousands of Iranians from the Islamist regime.

The difference is the US had bad intelligence and acknowledges it's a tragedy. The regime intentionally murders by the thousands and would murder more if it wasn't thwarted by the US and Israel. And somehow you're more upset about the former not the latter.

> Since the beginning of the 2025–2026 Iranian protests, the government of Iran has perpetrated widespread massacres of civilians, deploying both its own security forces and also imported foreign militias to suppress widespread public dissent across the country.

Obama actually did this in 2016.

https://www.cnn.com/2016/08/03/politics/us-sends-plane-iran-...

> Washington CNN — The Obama administration secretly arranged a plane delivery of $400 million in cash on the same day Iran released four American prisoners and formally implemented the nuclear deal, US officials confirmed Wednesday.
