haltcatchfire··on iPhone Duo
The Pixel Fold 10 (and 11) is IP68 rated
haltcatchfire··on OpenStreetMap: Admin_level for All Countries
A few days ago I was made aware of Street Complete here on HN. Same thing there - it makes it incredibly easy to submit additional data, such as opening hours and road types, to OSM.

haltcatchfire··on GrapheneOS has been ported to Android 17
I run Strava on my Pixel 10 Pro Fold running GrapheneOS. IIRC you need to have Google Play Store installed (with zero permissions, preferably) to make Strava work.
haltcatchfire··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
What's your monthly usage, aprox.? Do you use Kagi for getting to pages you know of but doesn't want to type the whole URL for, eg. typing "Hacker news" in the URL bar instead of "news.ycombinator.com"?
haltcatchfire··on Den stora Älgvandringen – The great moose migration (live)
This is pretty huge in Sweden. Slow TV at its finest :)
haltcatchfire··on Obsidian Sync now has a headless client
I try to selfhost most of my stuff I rely on. Immich, Vaultwarden, etc. I gave up on trying to selfhost sync solutions for Obsidian - Obsidian Sync is just so damn frictionless compared to all other solutions. Also, it feels good supporting the development of Obsidian.
haltcatchfire··on Tell HN: MitID, Denmark's digital ID, was down
It works just fine, but every time you open the app you have to dismiss a dialog saying that the app doesn't work without Google Play Services installed.
haltcatchfire··on Loops is a federated, open-source TikTok
dansup, the guy behind this, is the same guy that runs Pixelfed (a federated Instagram alternative)
haltcatchfire··on FSF announces Librephone project
Could you elaborate on why? This type of comment doesn't add any value.
haltcatchfire··on Kevo app shutdown
Even worse is that they are pushing their subscription service now, Connect Plus…
haltcatchfire··on UK Electricity Generation Map
> Yes, the water wheel will generate electricity all year round. In winter, it produces between 120 and 170 kWh per 24-hour period, with peak generation reaching up to 11 kW per hour. In summer, it generates between 3 and 5 kW per hour.

Seems like a nice complement with solar, given that they peak at each others inverse.

haltcatchfire··on Anna's Archive: An Update from the Team
That’s exactly how I do it. I enjoy reading DRM-free epubs on my Kobo, and whenever I finished a book I enjoyed, I buy it from the local sci-fi bookshop. I buy about 90% of all books I read.
haltcatchfire··on Toothpaste made with keratin may protect and repair damaged teeth: study
I'd appreciate that too. My dentist recommended me to use Duraphat, a 9 euro per 50 gram toothpaste.
haltcatchfire··on uBlock Origin Lite now available for Safari
How's Librem as a daily driver? Battery life, camera, reception/calls etc? I'm eager to get a proper Linux phone, but got burned by the awful performance of Pinephone.
haltcatchfire··on Typing 118 WPM broke my brain in the right ways
An honourable mention to https://typ.ing too. It’s the same kind of tool from the guys behind the moonlander keyboard, ZSA.
haltcatchfire··on Show HN: FancyLock – Linux screenlock with videos. Wayland support coming soon
As a Wayland user with an oled screen I very much appreciate the coming wayland support. I haven’t found any good lock screen solution that doesn’t risk burn-in for wayland yet.
haltcatchfire··on Magnesium Self-Experiments
As always with supplements, a deficiency might cause the issue (cramps in this case) and the supplement gets you back to normal levels, preventing cramps. If you’re experiencing cramps but don’t have a magnesium deficiency, taking magnesium supplements won’t make the cramps go away.
haltcatchfire··on Amazon's killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle books
You literally just change an URL in a config file. The config file is available by just connecting your Kobo by USB to your computer. Super simple and quite surprising.
haltcatchfire··on Amazon's killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle books
I put together a quick write-up on how I did my setup, for you :) If anything is unclear, feel free to reach out. https://medioker.utveckla.re/stuff/calibre-web-automated/?hn
haltcatchfire··on Amazon's killing a feature that let you download and backup Kindle books
It works - amazing - with Calibre actually. I set up Calibre-Web-Automated last week and setup my Kobo Libra 2 to sync with my Calibre server (swapping one url in a config file), and now my Kobo acts like my self hosted Calibre server is the actual Kobo Store, meaning I can browse and download all of my books. I think it syncs reading progress too.
haltcatchfire··on Obscure islands I find interesting
…and a logistical nightmare to start such an ambitious project.
haltcatchfire··on Hoppscotch: Open source alternative to Postman / Insomnia
A big plus imo is that you can check in and version control the files alongside your application. Very convenient when working on micro services in a team.
haltcatchfire··on Bitwarden introduces mandatory 2FA for new devices
Omg, thanks!
haltcatchfire··on We're bringing Pebble back
I've been using Fenix 5 and then Fenix 7 for many years now and I don't recognize any of the points you're making. I might agree on the awful charging port, but that's fixed by getting one of the cheap charging "pads" from Amazon.
haltcatchfire··on Minecraft with object impermanence
Reminds me of Weeping Angels from Dr. Who. Great concept!

haltcatchfire··on What other communities do you use apart from HN?
Got you an invite :)
haltcatchfire··on So You Want to Write Java in Neovim
I tried to give it a shot this year. Autocomplete (and especially Co-pilot) works really well nowadays. What made me reconsider is actually how imports are sorted and organised - they differ from how IntelliJ does it, which all other developers in my team uses. It’s a tiny but nagging issue for which I haven’t found a solution. It doesn’t help that IntelliJ is spectacularly good out of the box hah…
haltcatchfire··on Grayjay Desktop App
My YouTube recommendations are like 80% RC planes
haltcatchfire··on Moon
Did you publish it? Can we see?
haltcatchfire··on Unless my phone can be a PC, I don't want to keep paying for extra performance
iPhone has good support for peripherals, hubs and external displays, but lacks a desktop mode.
