hamter··on Second-Order Thinking
What are the inputs to this framework? Are we going "What happens if we defund the police?" in isolation or are we asking what happens if we take the money from the police and put it into housing, into medicare, into other social programs? The answers you arrive at might be different.

In fact if we extrapolate that line of reasoning out to the capitalist substrate of our economy we might find some surprising second, third+ order effects.

hamter··on Undersea eruption filled atmosphere with water – Science – AAAS
Why even make this joke?
hamter··on Show HN: Marple – Interactive time series visualization for engineers
I haven't used influxdb before but if the data resides on hosts I own I think that would be acceptable. Thanks for your answers!
hamter··on Show HN: Marple – Interactive time series visualization for engineers
This looks pretty useful and I will definitely be trying it out. I see you can upload CSV files for visualizing. Is there a way to send data as it's generated?

Another question would it be possible for Marple to use the data locally (or from say my own s3 bucket or database) instead of having to upload it to your servers?

hamter··on Mission to reach and operate at the focal region of the solar gravitational lens
For those like me who need some kind of reference for the distances mentioned (548-900 AU), Voyager 1 is 156.5 AU from earth today.
hamter··on Ask HN: Have you ever had a changed-your-life moment?
When it comes to working holiday visas this is one of those times non-Americans[1] actually have _more_ options than Americans.

1: Western non-Americans, more specifically, unfortunately..

hamter··on Why falling birthrates might be a bigger deal than dominants narratives imply
A lot of people haven't developed the muscle to look at anything discussing "demographics" extremely critically.
hamter··on Why falling birthrates might be a bigger deal than dominants narratives imply
Sure you can have this "discussion" but it comes off as needless (and probably racist) concern trolling. The Sweden thing is a favorite among reactionaries trying to mask their racism. The homicide rate in Sweden is lower than Canada. It's lower than Finland.
hamter··on Former Coinbase PM charged in cryptocurrency insider trading tipping scheme
yeah but it was private and presumably a pretty limited number of people knew about it at the time which narrows down the number of potential candidates pretty considerably.
hamter··on EU Digital Markets Act, aimed at Google, Apple, Amazon, approved
> But the problem here is, that the EU concepts are often adapted elsewhere

oh no anything but that

hamter··on The Lightning Network: Turning Bitcoin into Money
you still need to do kyc to convert to real money, which is essentially the same as transferwise for example
hamter··on The Lightning Network: Turning Bitcoin into Money
which ones
hamter··on Why are there no bridges in East London?
Jay Foreman's videos are great. Love the old BBC documentary aesthetic he (mockingly) goes for.
hamter··on The Singular 'They'
If you listen to someone whose first language is something like Spanish or French but isn't totally fluent in English you'll hear them use "he" instead of singular "they". It's not an egregious error but it definitely sounds a little strange (at least to my ear).
hamter··on Ten years after the Higgs, physicists face the nightmare of finding nothing else
weird conclusion
hamter··on Cheat sheet for if I'm gone
Dashlane actually has a deadman's switch feature. You can give it a list of accounts who can request access and if/when they request access you have 24 hours to decline them. After that they get access.

Too bad they got rid of their native apps....what a pain. I wish 1password had a feature like that.

hamter··on Apple Maps location scan spikes WiFi latency every 60 seconds
it's location services, not apple maps.
hamter··on Neoliberalism has resulted in preference for greater income inequality
> The predominantly rich are who get into those ivy league schools and rack up giant student loans. You're planning to pay off rich kids loans?

that one's gonna need a citation lol.

> Also how's that money printing going? 8.5% inflation and still rising... You want more of that?

ask the corporations that are posting record profits in spite of this inflation

> The poor will burn that million so fast. It's the mentality of the psyche, no different than a dog who eats their food as fast as possible fearing they might lose it.

break out the calipers boys

> The rich take the million and buy as much investments as possible right away.

wait i thought we were getting inflation that makes the million meaningless

> In a couple years we go check on how things are doing... the rich are rich. the poor are poor. Nothing changes. People need to understand that money doesn't work this way. Want to eliminate inequality? Teach people to not be poor, teach them to bust their butt doing something useful to society.

real rich dad / poor dad hours here

hamter··on Neoliberalism has resulted in preference for greater income inequality
> as long as it does not infringe the rights/freedoms of anyone else

that seems like the hairy part

hamter··on How to have a billion dollar exit with zero capital gains tax
someone who has a billion dollar exit is in a somewhat better position to pay those taxes than a person scraping by on minimum wage. What you seem to be advocating for here is not less taxes but pushing the taxes downward to people who can less afford them.

Maybe instead the federal government could do inventive things like substantially cut the military budget.

hamter··on Will Hare replace C? Or Rust? Or Zig? Or anything else?
Yeah that's not really a niche as much as it is a description of what Hare is. Maybe what would be more helpful are some examples of use-cases you and the rest of the Hare team have in mind when developing this language.
hamter··on Will Hare replace C? Or Rust? Or Zig? Or anything else?
So hare's target niche is people who want to use hare? On the first blog post and the ensuing conversation here that wasn't clearly stated (at least as far as I can tell). It seems a little strange that the programming language's niche would be "idk why not"... but then again why can't it be?
hamter··on Rocket Mortgage to trim 8% of workforce as home-loan market shrinks
don't worry we're happy to do both transit and xenophobia in canada (unless the next administration cancels the transit plans) (they will)
hamter··on Rocket Mortgage to trim 8% of workforce as home-loan market shrinks
there's that plus i think a bunch of boomers (like my parents) took it as a sign to retire.
hamter··on No one expects young men to do anything and they are responding by doing nothing
This is such a weird take. Is the conclusion here that the upper class needs to adopt a sigma grindset and get married more because it'll influence the poors to be less antisocial? Like none of the systemic rot or declining wages over the past 50 years matters?
hamter··on My take on Elon's offer for Twitter
employees' political biases aside these platforms exist to make money and so they'll play within the boundaries of "acceptable" speech which in the west is pro-capitalist, pretty centerist, and with some scraps thrown to minorities from time to time. If you are outside the window you are off the platform because advertisers get anxious. saying they arent political is absurd.
hamter··on Health care is turning into a consumer product
no im suggesting that 'yolo lol we have more beds' is meaningless if u end up with worse outcomes. and let me be clear that 66k per 1M cases and 807 deaths per 1M is better than 180K per 1M And 2515 per 1M.
hamter··on Health care is turning into a consumer product
idk canada has 806 covid deaths per 1M and usa has 2573, it's not exactly screaming 'success story' to me.
