hasbot··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
Slope at road (which indicates how difficult/costly a driveway will be), no flattish spots, and noise level are total dealbreakers for me.

There is https://maps.dot.gov/BTS/NationalTransportationNoiseMap/ and https://howloud.com/ but I just looked up my house ~2 miles away from an airport and neither provide an accurate read of the noise-level.

For temperature, I use Open-Meteo and only consider the last ten years 'cause, you know, global warming.

Another thing I didn't list was property shape. The point of having multiple acres is to provide isolation and a long narrow property doesn't do that. My 350' wide property is too narrow, but I think 600' is probably good.

hasbot··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
Doing that on public land is a risk. The USFS absolutely has restrictions on chemical usage. For example, pressure treated lumber is not allowed.

Gonna have the same "issue" with private lands. Over the 20+ years I owned a tree farm in rural Oregon, numerous of the nearby parcels were clearcut. This has benefits too. One day I was up on my ridge and was surprised to see a mountain I had never seen before because the ridge to the north was just clearcut.

It's weird how people think navigating through undeveloped land is like walking across a parking lot. Brush, branches, thorns, downed trees, uneven ground, etc can make walking through undeveloped land difficult to impossible.
hasbot··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
So many of my neighbors never go out side except to get in their car.
hasbot··on Show HN: Unfenced – Land for sale that borders public land
That's a good point. What about wetlands? My property has a terrible mosquito problem and I just found out there is a pond/swamp hidden in the brush. Since it's my property, I'll take steps to reduce the mosquito problem next year but if it was public land, that'd probably wouldn't be acceptable.

This is interesting though not really for me. I know that without trails, I won't be walking past the end of my property onto other property. I've probably spent a year of my life building trails on my own property.

When I look for a parcel of land, I'm also interested in proximity to healthcare, groceries, airports (bad!), motor sports, shooting ranges; general steepness of the property particularly at the roadway (too steep makes the property unusable), topography in general (any flat spots to build a house?); availability of power; water features; bikability (checked by looking at Strava's heatmap); average number of days temperature > 85F; average number of days temperature < 30F. There's more but this list is long enough already.

hasbot··on Decade-old RAM is making a comeback
This is interesting. Maybe add a couple examples of generated stories.
hasbot··on YouTuber Says Cops Visited Him After He Built a Flock-Style Camera to Track Cops
This is a complete overreaction from the cops. It's one guy with one camera. How's he tracking anyone? A cop (or any car) drives through a neighborhood and they are captured by far more cameras.
hasbot··on Sonnet 5.5
Sure, if it's right there in front of you in the editor. But if have to locate the file and the location within the file, it's easier to just type out what I want and have the LLM do it.
hasbot··on Don't be a meat proxy
Expect to see more of this as people's writing skills atrophy. I have done this sometimes when the words aren't coming to me. But, yeah, it'd probably best not not bother with the comment if I can't come up with a coherent articulate comment myself.
hasbot··on The great wealth transfer reality check
One reason is older homes need repairs. Furnaces, roofs, windows, etc. What to do when faced with $20k in repairs? Borrow it.
hasbot··on SpaceX at $100 Would Imply Zero AI Value, Morgan Stanley Says
When was that?
hasbot··on Nothing works and everyone is euphoric
This post and the comments so far reminded me of 1984's two minutes of hate. When is Hate Week?
hasbot··on UK households free to install plug-in balcony solar panels from end of August
I think point 2 will change once this becomes common. Once there is demand Home Depot etc are the perfect place to sell individual medium sized panels.

Hopefully it won't take 10 years for this to become easy.

hasbot··on Ask HN: What is the most unique website you've come across on the internet?
Goatse
hasbot··on It's a shame what's happened to radio
Yeah, I too long listened to radio after being a DJ in college. WXRT in Chicago was my go to. It's still running and I just listened to maybe 30 minutes: so many ads! I do enjoy the DJ banter and local references but with all the ads it ain't worth it.
hasbot··on What I learned selling 2,500 MIDI recorders: Hardware is not so hard
Have you considered supporting other MIDI instruments like e-drums and pad controllers?
hasbot··on $100 AI Music Video: Claude Fable 5 vs. GPT-5.6 Sol
How well do these models do producing a proof-of-life video? Asking for a friend.
hasbot··on Creating a GPS Tracking App from Scratch. What Should Come First?
Define a MVP (minimum viable product) which is the minimum functionality that produces something useful and/or interesting. Implement that. I use Strava et al. myself. I'd say the MVP would include recording and storing and exporting the tracks. Then add your real-time team tracking feature.
hasbot··on Poll: How often do you check "newest"?
I've looked at New a few times and have been disappointed with the quality of submissions.
hasbot··on Vibe coding and agentic engineering are getting closer than I'd like
We can do this today too (but definitely hopefully future LLMs make better architectural decisions). With Claude, I've been working on an application for the last 2 months. I didn't have a great vision of what I wanted when I started but I didn't want that to slow me down. The architecture is terrible - Claude separated some functionality into different classes but did a bad job at it and created a big ball of mud. Now that I finally have my vision locked down and implemented (albeit poorly), it'd be a great time to throw it away and start over. It'd be interesting to see the result and see how long it takes.
hasbot··on Now is the best time to write code by hand
> Once you try the models, you realise how good they are, and there is the second incentive. These things write working code and as the models get better and better, the argument that they make mistakes will get quieter and quieter until it fades away, like all high conviction opinions that turn out to be wrong over time do.

Is this true though? Will the models get better and better? I'm not a hater, but Sonnet/Opus generates terrible code albeit mostly functioning code.

hasbot··on Every plane you see in the sky – you can now follow it from the cockpit in 3D
It has the university trainer airplanes near me.
hasbot··on Every plane you see in the sky – you can now follow it from the cockpit in 3D
This is cool. Now I can look out the cockpit of that plane that's been doing a pattern over my house for an hour.
hasbot··on Show HN: ProofShot – Give AI coding agents eyes to verify the UI they build
No. I just told Claude to do it and after a couple of iterations it was working.
hasbot··on Show HN: ProofShot – Give AI coding agents eyes to verify the UI they build
I use Claude Code Sonnet and Opus for this and it works pretty well. Not perfect but good enough. At some point, I will have but to go in and tweak layout but like 99% of the functionality and layout is done for me.
hasbot··on Show HN: ProofShot – Give AI coding agents eyes to verify the UI they build
I had claude build a backdoor command port in the Godot application I'm working on. Using commands, Claude can interact with the screen, dump the node tree, and take screen shots. It works pretty well. Claude will definitely iterate over layout issues.
hasbot··on Nightingale – open-source karaoke app that works with any song on your computer
I hate to be that guy that points out other projects but YARG has vocals and there are a slew of songs that can be used.
