hattmall··on The $6.3B Binance hack was pulled off in just 20 minutes
Binance having an extra $6B to cover this is wild to me.
hattmall··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
Mostly that planes already have good autopilot but still most crashes are due to human error. There is also a reasonably high barrier to entry to piloting. One that can majorly be removed by current autopilot + purpose built AI and anyone should be able to fly without much overhead.
hattmall··on Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure
What are some businesses where software was really a moat but the software lacks sufficient complexity that AI can reproduce it?

I can't think of any, I'm sure there are some, but I would really like to know. I just don't think for most business the software is so much of a moat unless it's very complex.

hattmall··on Anthropic S-1
Negligible switching costs is probably the economic / business related term to use t describe the opposite of a moat.
hattmall··on AI promised less work. I've never worked more
Most non-commoditized reasonable paying jobs are a product of information asymmetry. Anything that shrinks that asymmetrical surface is a threat to jobs. The company you are missing is the one that fires 99 of their engineers, hires 200 generally lower performing but far cheaper engineers and uses AI to accelerate their output.

Now whether or not that would actually work given the reality of the AI output is a question, but that's the general premise.

Does Deepseek say how much those Clusters cost?

If the beef producers don't believe beef is a commodity and they want to get you addicted to their specific beef then it makes sense. Right now in these companies life cycles profit doesn't actually matter. The only thing that matters is how much of their beef is being consumed. They want to give people so much free beef they can't even imagine the idea of having a meal that doesn't contain beef.
hattmall··on Xbox Turns Down Netflix $500M Offer
Anything could be game of thrones (early seasons) if it well written. You don't really need any Halo rights if you have good writers and can make a good show. The point of having Halo rights is they let you produce a mid show but have an automatic audience.
hattmall··on FreeDNS
This is one of the most solid and longest lasting services online. Have been using it for almost two decades I think and nothing's changed.
hattmall··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
> that the argument of them being just a probabilistic word matching engine can also be applied to our own brains

But that of course is only as it relates to language. Which isn't at all the primary function of the brain and driver of it's experience. It's the other way around because it's all of the other stuff that drives language. Considering the human brain a probabilistic word matching engine fails to capture the underlying forces that direct the language output because a human can say completely different things about the same scenario based on a huge number of non-language inputs or factors. Language is just what humans have come up with to communicate all of the other things.

hattmall··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
Human experience though is far different from anything an LLM can train on. LLMs are generally limited to what's written in books or on the internet, and influence only from those authors. That's a small subset of people and an even smaller subset of their interactions. Even on the most social and widely used platform the commentary and discourse is incredibly different than what takes place in real life.
hattmall··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
Modafinil is basically nothing compared to other drugs. Like you will go a longer time before feeling sleepy but it's not even on the level of caffeine for stimulation. It doesn't give you much of any wired feeling, you just are less tired when you normally would be.
hattmall··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
Well most people don't actually turn into addicts, it's just the people that do, that's how they start. Lots more people use stimulants and benzos occasionally without crossing into an addiction threshold.
hattmall··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
Benzo blackouts are the most clear cut blackouts ever. No feeling of time lost, no amount of cues can bring back any memories, you just wake up and the pills are gone. It doesn't always mean you did something crazy though, you can very well have just had a normal week. And you can learn stuff, you just won't remember learning it. Like if you watch a show you can know what happened on the show a week later but just have no memory of watching it.
hattmall··on Facebook Pages require paid subscription to post more than two links per month
Yeah I mean it's a problem I'm in groups that just get tons of spam to things off-site that are mainly scams or just fake to get you to view a an ad-ridden page.
hattmall··on DeepInfer: High-performance inference framework for DeepSeek models
Honestly that's an interesting statement because in my experience Claude writes around 5-10x more code than a reasonable person would to accomplish the same thing. If you include comments then that number goes way up as well.
hattmall··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
I still feel like there are some questions there, as in what is the actual amortized cost, plus the ongoing variable costs and even the non-training related overhead.

Plus there is the actual demand side to consider and how does it impact when paid utilization isn't 100%.

hattmall··on GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone
And wouldn't it be better to just reference high quality known to be accurate information vs generating it on the fly slightly differently everytime?
hattmall··on GPT‑6 and Intelligent UI for everyone
It also doesn't really like tell you how to actually cook anything. Good or even just decent recipes tend to tell you the temperatures, times, techniques and orders of ingredients to do things for the best results. Unless I'm missing it this is just really broad strokes. But I guess the goal in engagement so they want you to ask a lot more questions to actually figure anything out.
hattmall··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It means they had recently consumed marijuana enough to be consider under the influence of it. Marijuana that had not yet cleared the bloodstream. Active comes from active metabolites, their body was still metabolizing recently consumed marijuana.

That's in opposition to the inactive metabolites which are stored in fat and slowly secreted via urine for a period much longer than someone is under the influence of marijuana.

So saying active means that their body was still processing it and the brain CB receptors are still being engaged. Whether or not they were "high" might be debatable, but considering it's showing up in a FAR higher amount of the people involved in fatal accidents than any group of the general public it's a pretty reasonable conclusion that it played a role.

hattmall··on Engineer says Claude Code has made his job "soul-sucking"
Primarily e-commerce and finance, so interacting with a lot of APIs and pretty much everything has real money attached so if things are wrong there are pretty direct costs that can quickly become apparent. There are of course the easy to see issues where things are mispriced or fulfillment errors but there's also the trickier things where errors that cause a lack of exposure can be converted to money lost.

IME, there has definitely been a pull back in the reliance on AI in all aspects of the business, and fortunately there has mostly been caution with the AI in the related software development so not too much of a push to go all in.

I've seen some pretty drastic losses occur from AI transposing things like dates and compatible brands. Then again people have fat fingered million dollar losses before as well.

hattmall··on Across the Globe, People Increasingly Say Social Media Is Harming Democracy
Sure, but it's become a major issue with social media too because of the ease and ability to amplify things that aren't even something major or regional media would cover and profitable media still has some incentive to not be completely inaccurate because of liability. Now you can have the dumbest people with no concern for liability, because they own nothing and don't really have any source of income, making factually inaccurate AI assisted posts, videos, images, etc that inflame the general public who do no verification or fact checking.

Just an example, but in my city there have been some local cost overruns on projects, which of course is a problem. But the amount is not huge, ~ 3 million which has accumulated over like 5 years. The money was clearly spent on projects as they have been completed, but there are people making videos doxxing every contractor that did anything with the city, calling for FBI investigations and posting the personal information and videos contractors, city employees, elected officials families and coming up with wildly numbers 30 million+ etc to say they have been stealing the funds. It's impactful to the point that some of the contractors have decline further municipal wok which literally is going to add millions of costs as the local companies were considerably cheaper, plus it will delay projects.

Plus the fun thing is many of the people making videos etc don't even live here and half of the commenters threatening violence etc are from other places in the country and don't even realize the discussion isn't about their town.

hattmall··on Utah to let AI examine patients and prescribe medication without human oversight
Have you tried telehealth? Obviously some stuff needs in person but I've been reasonably pleased, never felt rushed and the doctors just seem to generally have a far more pleasant demeanor. Dermatology is also one of the areas where it works really well.

That being said, have you tried more than just basic lotion? Butenafine clears a lot of fungal issues. High content zinc oxide diaper paste is also very useful. There's a brand from Dollar Tree that's very popular but triple paste is another option. The heavy zinc oxide coating cures a wide array of skin issues.

Wash your hands with nizoral then moisturizer with something like Okeefes or just the ZO cream.

hattmall··on Engineer says Claude Code has made his job "soul-sucking"
I'm very curious to see how the "building codes are first written in blood" will play out in the software world.
hattmall··on Engineer says Claude Code has made his job "soul-sucking"
As someone who makes heavy use of AI tools to write code I also find it surprising. The idea that even the latest models of Claude and Codex are capable of writing sufficiently useful and production usable code is baffling. Unless you are operating at extremely low stakes with few meaningful constraints I don't see how anyone can seriously rely fully on AI generated code. I see the code daily, it certainly can save some time when used properly but there are very hard limits to the amount of concepts that can be affirmatively managed before AI begins to tie itself in knots. The only solution AI is capable of from that point is of course generating more code to sort out any issues. "Hand" writing actual clear, concise and unbloated code is still very much a requirement.
hattmall··on 10-year Treasury yield climbs above 5.3% to a level not seen in 24 years
Sure, Trump lies, but it's not unique at all. Biden was going to cancel student debt, Obama was going to close guantanamo, end the Iraq War and have single payer healthcare, GWB's "Mission Accomplished"... etc. So Trump's general dishonesty about what he's capable of as President is par for the course.
hattmall··on What a Massive New 728-Foot-Wide Crater Means for Future Moon Bases
Crazy that space is just full of high speed rocks flying around all the time.
hattmall··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It's still inconsistent as fuck. There's no real industry standards and analysis. The same gummies from the same pack bought at a dispensary can vary wildly in my experience. Pens are a bit more consistent. But yeah not as variable as the bathtub gravity bong rips of random weed that people got from who knows where.
hattmall··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
That's dumb though because then you just push people to other things and you will see the same issues arise as consumption increases to alcohol levels and there's a reasonable probability they will be worse. Already the percent of fatal accidents involving active marijuana found in the blood stream is higher than alcohol car fatalities. 40% vs 30%. Homicides show a similar pattern. And marijuana consumption is only 17% vs 54%. All time high for MJ and near all time low for alcohol.
hattmall··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Ok, so does this mean prices in the US will go down? I keep seeing stuff about countries shifting away from US goods but prices seem to continue to rise.
