helij··on Three major UK airports have been hit by hackers
Over 9M people affected. Among stolen are email addresses, post codes, telephone numbers, vehicle registration numbers. Not clear if when booked fast track for example all people included got their data (name&surname) along with other details stolen as well.
helij··on Why is it so hard for the U.S. to win wars?
Here's some from BBC (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cg7ed4rp7x5o and https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp9jl8vxdy9o) and one from Reuters (https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russia-hands-ukraine-10...). No reason not to believe these numbers as neither side denied it. The reasons for such numbers mismatch are many and don't always tell the story of who's "winning".
helij··on Wallace the 6 inch f/2.8 telescope, building it, and hiking with it
https://stellafane.org/tm/index.html has good guides. There are astronomy forums such as CloudyNights with their own ATM sections. Edmind Optics has All About Telescopes by Sam Brown available online - https://www.edmundoptics.com/ViewDocument/All%20About%20Tele...

There are so many books around this and many great website such as this one for example: https://www.bbastrodesigns.com/tm.html

helij··on Wallace the 6 inch f/2.8 telescope, building it, and hiking with it
Barlow!?
helij··on Ask HN: What happened to the movie "Pirates of the Silicon Valley"
One Google search away. The full movie is on Daily Motion.
helij··on Ask HN: Is it still worth it to try to get a job in IT
And sometimes that's enough for a good and fulfilling life.
helij··on Using the internet like it's 1999
FTP?
helij··on Germany Mandates ODF for Public Administration
I've been using ODF professionally and privately for years now without any issues. What's the problem your side?
helij··on GIMP 3.2 released
One of the first things I install on any new computer is Gimp. Thank you to all involved in the Gimp project.
helij··on Ask HN: What open source projects are you grateful for?
Linux & LibreOffice. At the end of the day I'm grateful to all people who work on open source and free software.
helij··on Bird flu viruses are resistant to fever, making them a major threat to humans
People mix common cold with flu all the time. If you have the flu you usually can't even go out of bed, even with medication.
helij··on Ask HN: Would you rather have 20% more money or 20% more time
I already made that choice. Have had 3-day weekends for more than 4 years now.
helij··on TSMC says employees tried to steal trade secrets on iPhone 18 chip process
Sorry, but I find that hard to believe. Part certainly wasn't very basic.
helij··on How to Firefox
A lot of hate and bashing of Firefox here. On my Linux machine (relatively modern desktop) there's no difference in speed between Chrome(Chromium) and Firefox. A lot of people talk about goodies and extensions. I get it, life is easier with some of those but I just don't care. I use it barebones with enhanced tracking protection and it works flawlessly. Don't see many ads, the ones I see are not intrusive.
helij··on How to Firefox
In two decades of using it (yep) I never had an issue. I used it on Linux, MacOS and Windows and I don't remember any issues whatsoever.
helij··on Nintendo Switch 2 account bans continue: warning after buying old copy of Bayo 3
Switch 2 is amazing.
helij··on UK to buy F-35As that can't be refueled from RAF tankers
This is simply not true. Did you walk any US, UK and other first-world countries factories? A lot of them have separate machinist shops with tens or hundreds of machinists who can make pretty much anything given materials and time. Even every other small factory has a machinist shop where all kinds of things are made including whole machines, parts, improvements for existing machines, etc. In my small town there are two small modern machinist shops that can make anything you want. Look around and see if there are any factories or small shops and ask if you can take a look. You would be amazed by locally made high tech you see and what can be done.

I'm not really sure when and where the "we've lost the ability to make things" came from?

I agree that other countries caught up though.

helij··on Just how many $10 /MOS subscriptions do startups expect us to sign up for?
It's perfectly fine to ignore 99.999% of those. Whip out a script or an app that does exactly what you need without the bloat if viable.

I subscribe to many newsletters and get loads of offers. I pretty much ignore all of them. Most of those $10/month tools are just clones of something or not useful at all in the trenches so to speak.

helij··on GNOME and Red Hat Linux eleven years ago (2009)
I miss the era of "startx"!
helij··on Ask HN: Moving to London from California
I never understood and would like to know more on why people from London or other areas that are not Liverpool and have no connections to Liverpool whatsoever cheer for Liverpool team. I'm kind of local patriot and always cheer for my local club.
helij··on Car companies are in a billion-dollar software war
New and a little older, maybe up to 5 years old Hondas are like that.
helij··on High tariffs become 'real' with our first $36K bill
Same as you I'm in defense mode. I exited the market in early February since something was not right. All I have (not much) sits in money market fund now at 5%.
helij··on Ask HN: Favourite Pen
Thanks all for suggestions!
helij··on Reworking 30 lines of Linux code could cut power use by up to 30 percent
And another one here!
helij··on "Is This Tech Dead?" A snarky autopsy engine for your dead frameworks
Where's Bottle.py?

Otherwise cool tool.

helij··on Waiting 100 years for a home isn't a housing crisis, it's a moral collapse
Please stop spreading generational divide. Those olds were burdened with this just like today's young. Somehow some people think olds had it easy. Housing issues are not us(young) vs them(old).
helij··on Vacheron Constantin breaks the world record for most complicated wristwatch
Just go for solar radio sync G-Shock square and you're done. No batteries, no setting up, extremely rugged and imo it looks good as well. Since I got that one a few years ago I only wear mechanical watch for various "occasions" - pretty much like a jewellery.
helij··on GIMP 3.0
Congrats to GIMP devs and everyone involved. I love GIMP and have been using it for decades.
helij··on Amateur Telescope Making Main Page
If you have a garden 8" Dobsonian or even larger if you can handle it. If in a flat a 4" Apochromatic refractor. Mars can be so so but good views of Jupiter, Saturn and Luna can be had in the UK. Both good for double stars as well and even deep sky objects if in a low light pollution area.
helij··on Simple CPU Design
I just have to say. Such a beautiful and accessible website. No fluff, no ads, no distractions. I love it!
