hiddencost··on Alphabet Announces Third Quarter 2026 Results [pdf]
It's about expectations. They missed expectations on earnings, meaning they're less valuable than people thought.
hiddencost··on Gemini 4 Carbon
I think the majority of traffic is from Enterprise customerd that goes through their API. Their consumer facing products do lag, but I don't think they care.
hiddencost··on Gemini 4 Carbon
I don't think that's right. Carbon and Argon have the same price.

I suspect they're using a new naming convention because they had previous contractual obligations tied to the "pro" and "flash" naming, and by switching to a new naming schema they avoid those commitments.

hiddencost··on Gemini 4 Carbon
They released Argon shortly after announcing it, so I think some benefit of the doubt is reasonable here. They claim they're already evaluating it via the government.

I suspect they're announcing it for two reasons: to get ahead of all the leaks; and because it's earnings report day.

hiddencost··on Yandex Takes a Second Data Center Hit in 48 Hours
us-east-1 is located close to the NSA and a huge fraction of the American military and intelligence apparatus. And Washington, D.C.

It's probably one of the safest places on the planet.

hiddencost··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Immigration makes the whole country wealthier. An immigrant's success doesn't harm you. Making America an undesirable country to work in harms you. A rising tide raises all boats.
hiddencost··on Anne Carson wins Nobel Prize in literature 2026
Your loss. One of the most beautiful works of literature and short. Is the depiction of gay people that distressing to you? I read books about straights all the time.
hiddencost··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
Partially because organizations like Facebook spend heavily to ensure they're not taxed fairly.
hiddencost··on Gemini 4 Argon
28 years. It's been 28 years that they were on the frontier. Search was the precursor to all of this.
hiddencost··on Energy Timelines Photovoltaic
I think the story is even rosier than that. Coal power is dying, quickly.
hiddencost··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
There is a technical definition of genocide. There's no ambiguity as to what Israel is doing, only people like you who are probably concern trolling.
hiddencost··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
Bruh it's literally text book.
hiddencost··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Who is giving you the idea that trade makes things more expensive?

hiddencost··on A New Experiment Meta-Strategy
The blog post lost a bunch of text in the middle due to bad copy/paste, I think.
hiddencost··on When did Google get so weird?
It's not about shorter vs longer.

Many people who learned to search the Internet in early 2000s learned "boolean search queries" (terms connected with AND or OR). They're talking about the difference between boolean search queries and natural language search queries.

hiddencost··on Automattic has a new board after failed attempt to put CEO on leave
... You still are supposed to act in the best interests of your share holders.

"Obviously the CEO was going to break the law, anyone who thought otherwise was a fool." is not grounds for voiding the legal obligations that CEO has to his shareholders.

hiddencost··on How we learned to stop worrying and love campus surveillance
Those protests were anti Genocide and anti land theft, calling them anti Israel is misleading.
hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
No, they would simply not buy it.
hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
No. They can do that with an order covering the specific parameters under which they care about it. Supply chain risk definition is about adversaries and sabotage, not companies dictating contract terms.
hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Supply chain risk is a technical definition not a vibes based one.

And companies absolutely have the right to dictate terms. The idea that the DoD has the unilateral authority to do whatever it wants is literal textbook fascism. It's never been the law in the US and it should not be now.

hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
??? What are you talking about. Anthropic isn't an adversary and they're not required to sell for purposes they don't want to. It's not sabotage and it's not malicious.

This is a designation reserved for terrorists and the link.

hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
Using Claude for working on the refrigerators at the commissary is not a supply chain risk. You're just making stuff up.
hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
This is straight up fascism. The DoD could have simply used a different provider but instead they're trying to destroy anthropic as a company.
hiddencost··on U.S. appeals court upholds designation of Anthropic as supply chain risk
No. This also means that no companies that work with th DoD can use anthropic models for any purpose.
hiddencost··on Goodbye Google
IDK man, have you read the Bible? I don't think that's really the Jesus model laid out there.
hiddencost··on Making the case for Ed Zitron as the last of the great bloggers
He's causing a remarkable amount of harm to some very scared people.
hiddencost··on The Price of Intelligence Is Falling Rapidly
Surprisingly, this isn't necessarily true.

To take an intuition: there are lots of problems that are easier to pose and to check than they are to solve, in mathematics.

hiddencost··on Transit rewards
Disagree lol.

We could move the entire population of San Francisco into full time care for very little compared to what we're spending on AI.

hiddencost··on Transit rewards
They're discarding the cost per mile to a driver. If you add that back (and especially if you add externalities back) driving is more expensive.
hiddencost··on Transit rewards
You're missing a lot of externalities here.

Also, the cost to a driver of the car is around $0.70 not including cost to the government and cost of externalities.
