hisfraudulency··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI

hisfraudulency··on Could a modern chess engine on a Pentium have defeated Kasparov in 1996?
Yeah that last bit is what I was going for.

I was responding to the commenter's intuition that GMs do actually analyze more lines. I'm saying the original article's claim checks out even for machines.

There's an analog in machine chess. According to the research paper from 2017, AlphaZero considered ~10,000 moves per decision, 1,000x fewer than Stockfish at the time. h2h it beat Stockfish pretty badly.
hisfraudulency··on Anthropic S-1
Made it up tbh

So it looks like $2T is indeed the target
hisfraudulency··on Sixteen years after Deepwater Horizon, deep sea life shows few signs of recovery
TMI hadn't even entered my mind while typing out that comment which just goes to show how political the historiography of this stuff is.

Interesting that the spill hasn't dampened long term prospects for offshore drilling (besides the brief push against it around 2016) whereas Chernobyl basically nerfed American nuclear power gen.
hisfraudulency··on Why We're Banning AI
Too much ambiguity on my part, I meant the WSJ staff shouldn't use it in the final output of their op-eds.
hisfraudulency··on Why We're Banning AI
Good point.

I'm kinda ambivalent on the Druckenmiller WSJ case. He's admittedly a poor writer, and probably wouldn't have published anything had it not been for AI.

Obviously the WSJ staff shouldn't be using it in the final output, but if it's a prominent guest's opinion filtered through ChatGPT, I'm mostly fine with it.

hisfraudulency··on OpenAI's average basic pay for British staff hits £794,000
This is like making $5M in the US.
hisfraudulency··on Americans' social activity has steeply declined in the past 30 years
It feels strange to assign all the blame to media, like theoretically it should be a number of factors, but that's what I got from reading Bowling Alone (fwiw I read the 1995 essay and not the 2000 book).

Even on the TFR point, the birth rate in 1976 in USA was 1.74, 2025 it was 1.6. So it's not like a China situation where it went from over 3 to less than 1 in 50 years.

hisfraudulency··on Character.ai has initiated voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy
Huh. Idk if that makes it more or less strange. Post GPT-3 and he thought the future of AI was an artificial version of Cameo.

It was always odd to me that talent like Noam Shazeer was working at a company with such a gimmicky premise to begin with.
hisfraudulency··on Mark Zuckerberg grilled on usage goals and underage users at California trial
There's an incredible cultural contempt for social media, everyone recognizes the harms, but we collectively spend more and more time on social media apps.

Wat mean?
