hmexx··on Don’t we all just want to use SQL on the front end?
A day late, but... https://rsql.io
hmexx··on System76 – Pangolin
49Wh is very small battery for a laptop, even a light one, which this one isn't particularly. So spec-wise not impressive. Not surprising as it's competing with some pretty big players with a lot of hardware expertise.

For reference the LG Gram 15 has a 72Whr battery at 1.1kg. The current champ in 'battery size to weight ratio'. Most ultraportables have a 50-60Whr battery at around 1.3kg.

hmexx··on Intel’s 11th Gen Core Tiger Lake SoC Detailed
Things have indeed slowed down but you're cherry picking numbers. +50% single-thread but +200% in multi-threaded!
hmexx··on Tailwind CSS: From Side-Project Byproduct to Multi-Million Dollar Business
Has anyone considered using utility-style CSS combined with semantic class naming? Example:

  <div class="profile-card"></div>
  .profile-card {
    @include tailwind-css-1
    @include tailwind-css-2
    ...etc...
  }
This way your html has semantic classes but the definition of the classes uses something like tailwind instead of raw CSS. One level of abstraction. Seems the best of both worlds?
hmexx··on Supabase (YC S20) – An open source Firebase alternative
nhost.io basically does this. it packages Hasura with its own auth backend, as well as an S3 compatible storage backend. They're adding lambda functions soon.

Effectively a firebase alternative using open source tech

hmexx··on Scott Forstall tells story about Steve Jobs, Microsoft, and a dead fish [video]
So he interviewed at two really competitive companies. One CEO offered him to skip the entire interview chain after chatting to him for a few minutes. The other sent him a desperate gift by mail after he turned down their offer.

Scott must be really good at interviews! :P

hmexx··on Why Do American Houses Have So Many Bathrooms?
Something unintentionally amusing about your comment. Sounds like the opinion of an alien playing SimToilet :)
hmexx··on Am I Unique?
Doesn't seem to be the case. I tried both browsers and got the same result, i.e. 180+ fonts sent (<0.01% match)
hmexx··on Am I Unique?
My fonts alone makes me pretty unique it seems (<0.01%). 180 or so fonts that the browser is happy to share with the world. Does seem a little unnecessary.
hmexx··on Show HN: Learn When to Quit
Agreed.

Also, there is really no reason to have multiple boxes you have to click. You could just have a single "next" button along with a counter to show how many choices you have left before you run out.

hmexx··on Ants trapped for years in an old bunker
That's actually surprising. I would have guessed around 0.25-0.50g or so. I'm usually pretty good at guesstimations, and yet I'm off by a factor of 100 here.
hmexx··on Estonia has a new way to stop speeding motorists
This is like being put in the "naughty corner", for adults.

... and since most adults experienced this form of punishment during their formative years, it's bound to be super effective.

Brilliant!

hmexx··on .NET Core 3.0
List of performance improvements is mind-boggling:

https://devblogs.microsoft.com/dotnet/performance-improvemen...

How could a mature standard library / frameworks have so much performance gains to be had?

hmexx··on Ask HN: What’s Your Net Worth?
Closing in on a billion.

Got 7 lambos.

hmexx··on Simplify Gmail: Bringing the Simplicity of Google Inbox to Gmail
It is now April 3rd and Inbox is still working for me, both on iOS and Web. Is it too early to hope they may have changed their mind?
hmexx··on Ask HN: I will pay you $2000 and code the MVP for your side-project
For a second I thought I was reading through my post history when this came up!
hmexx··on Boston Dynamics’ new robot stacks boxes [video]
At this point I feel like Boston Dynamics has a designer whose job is to make their robots look cool/interesting, beyond what their function requires.

There's always something mesmorizing about them!

hmexx··on Apple iPhone SE Available on Apple Store Again
I want an edge-to-edge iphone 7/8 myself. the SE is a tad too small and the X is a tad too big!

I really think they had the perfect weight size with the 6/7/8

hmexx··on Samsung’s Foldable Phone Is the $1,980 Galaxy Fold
Does anyone know why both the Samsung and the other announced foldable phone have huge bezels on the OUTSIDE screen? That's just a regular non-foldable screen, why is it not edge-to-edge?
hmexx··on PostgreSQL 11 Reestablishes Window Functions Leadership
Interesting content, although the title is a little dramatic. 'Reestablishes Leadership' lol
hmexx··on [dead]
I managed to include a timestamp to a random point in the video. If this gets upvoted, please remove it from the URL. Thank you.
hmexx··on Developments around Microservices, API Gateways, Kubernetes and Service Mesh
I’ve never read an article with as many words (brands / technologies) that I have not heard of..

I must be losing touch with tech!

hmexx··on iOS Menu
it just needs a little refinement, where the menu contents shift to the left/right, and out of the way of your finger when you swipe down through them.
hmexx··on Stacking concrete blocks is a surprisingly efficient way to store energy
You made me smile
hmexx··on People in these countries work the longest hours according to OECD
Previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17450801
hmexx··on Average annual hours worked per country
Funny.. in Europe, Germans are considered hard-working and Greeks typically "lazy". According to these stats, the truth is completely the opposite!
hmexx··on Improved JavaScript and WebAssembly performance in EdgeHTML 17
pun intended?
hmexx··on "Pwned Passwords" V2 With Half a Billion Passwords
I just tried a 11 character password without special chars, that I’ve used on over 50 sites, over the last decade. It’s my password for throaway websites. Some pretty dodgy.

Not in the database.

Makes me feel pretty good about password security overall!

hmexx··on Ask HN: Google Cloud Functions – Do you use it in production? What do you think?
I've noticed the speed of deployment as well. Any idea why it's that slow?
hmexx··on IOTA: A tangled mess
What about the other DAG technologies like the one used by ByteBall? I’m not crypto-intelligent enough to analyze them but could DAG be a credible replacement for the blockchain? Iota is just a very well marketed option in that space. Their execution seems shoddy.
