hmhrex··on Show HN: Encarta 95 Web
The first thing I looked for as well. The nostalgia.
hmhrex··on Where did the old web go? We followed 657,607 links to find out
Purevolume mention made me sad. I miss that community.
hmhrex··on Open Source Low Tech
Oh thanks! This is exactly what I was thinking!

My wife came across the Jean Pain compost water heater recently, and I've been really intrigued by the idea. I haven't found a great compact design though, and most of the information I see online treats it more like a fun project than something that could be iterated on and refined. Would love to find somewhere to trade ideas on this and potentially replace some or all of gas water heater.

Here's a decent post about the idea: https://waldenlabs.com/compost-water-heaters-from-jean-pain/

hmhrex··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
I helped build the e-commerce site for Tilmor[0] when they were starting up. They build easily repairable mechanical farming equipment for small to medium sized farms with an emphasis on organic farming. It's a really interesting niche that I think will continue to grow. I'm 6 years out from working for them and still think of their products fondly.

I love this. Great work. Huge fan of digital experimentation. It's an art form I feel isn't as popular these days. I've had an idea on the backburner for a bit now of doing a digital quarterly with contributions like this. Kind of a digital experiment punk zine. Maybe it's too niche, but I feel like it could be a good time.
hmhrex··on Vitamin D and Omega-3 have a larger effect on depression than antidepressants
This is all in a book called The Depression Cure by Stephen S. Ilardi (https://bookshop.org/p/books/the-depression-cure-the-6-step-...)

I read this years ago and it's fascinating. Looks like it's been updated for a second edition last year.

hmhrex··on We can’t send mail farther than 500 miles (2002)
My favorite bug story. I created a curated list of similar bugs at https://500mile.email
hmhrex··on Bug Stories
I do sometimes find good stories on The Daily WTF, but their focus is a bit different from 500 Mile Email.
hmhrex··on Bug Stories
Hey this is my site! Thanks for sharing!

It’s been a bit since I’ve added stories. I’ll need to add some more with this renewed interest.

Let me know if have a good story!

hmhrex··on Bug Stories
I’ll take a look at these and add some I don’t have!
hmhrex··on Bug Stories
Hey, creator here. I’ll look through these today to see what links are dead and try and grab archived ones. Will work on getting archives of the rest of them as well.
hmhrex··on The greatest bug I never fixed (2010)
Thanks for sharing this one! I've been trying to collect more video game ones for 500ME because I find them to be highly entertaining.
hmhrex··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining
I will be adding this one to https://500mile.email ! What a great story.
hmhrex··on The Wi-Fi only works when it's raining
Thanks for mentioning! I would love more submissions! I have a few stories in my backlog to read and vet, but not enough. I'll be going through this thread and adding more that haven't been added yet.
hmhrex··on Can’t send email more than 500 miles (2002)
This is a great story. Thanks for sharing!
hmhrex··on Can’t send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Oh wow. That’s a good one! Will add that one.
hmhrex··on Can’t send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Thanks for the suggestion! Maybe I should add archive links from The Internet Archive for stories in case links die. In the case of tweets, I’d probably need to screenshot them or something.
hmhrex··on Can’t send email more than 500 miles (2002)
Hey thanks for linking my site! I was wondering where the extra traffic was coming from :)

If anyone has any stories that I should add, please send them my way!

Also, I have been slacking a little with the newsletter because of life events. Since there have been several sign ups since this post, I'll be more active in getting the weekly newsletter out.

Thanks for looking!

hmhrex··on VCs love to talk about AI, but aren’t writing as many checks as you might think
The crucial part of building tools with AI though is how quickly it becomes obsolete by new models. A little different than other tools.
hmhrex··on Berty: Privacy-first messaging app
Signal works on desktop nicely, but you still need the mobile app on a smart phone in order for it to work.
hmhrex··on Berty: Peer-to-peer messaging app that works with or without internet access
This hollr idea is cool. I feel like just having your own instance of this would be enough as a product.
hmhrex··on Show HN: I made an alternative to Google Alerts that listens to social media
Awesome! I'm digging this. I also like how the features are tiered. You might want to make a chart showing what features are under what tier, but it's not overly confusing.
hmhrex··on Classic Bug Reports (2015)
I made a similar site that is a curated list of absurd software bugs called https://500mile.email

I love reading stories like this, so I'm open to more suggestions!

hmhrex··on Zoom Security Exploit: Cracking private meeting passwords
Thanks for linking that essay. It's a good read. I especially liked the Sarah/Exec conversation. Will definitely keep this one saved for later.
hmhrex··on Recursive, a free variable font for code and UI, now on Google Fonts
I haven't seen this yet. Just downloaded and installed for VS Code and it makes a huge difference. Thanks for the recommendation!
hmhrex··on Show HN: 500 Mile Email – A curated list of absurd software bug stories
I keep seeing this amazing story posted every 6-12 months and I keep thinking that it would be nice to have a curated list of similar sites, so I built this over the past few days.

Tech used: Lektor, Bulma, Netlify

hmhrex··on macOS Catalina 10.15.5
Same here. It was frustrating to not see a fix for this in the changelog. Hopefully they fix this soon.
hmhrex··on Unofficial APIs
That Notion API is pretty slick. His example of using it for task management and dashboards is wild. May have to give that a whirl.
hmhrex··on Iyashikei: Japan’s Genre of “Healing Games” (2018)
A couple other games I recommend:

1. Florence - A love story. The artwork is gorgeous and the soundtrack is beautiful

2. Assemble With Care - Simple puzzle game with a nice light story.
