hnav··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
Huge asymmetries both in bandwidth and capability between up and downstream. A lot of US users are still on DOCSIS, a lot of users worldwide behind CGNAT (less of an issue with IPv6), stateful firewalls for cellular to avoid creating unsolicited radio traffic. A ton of the bandwidth the average person is consuming is from talking to a caching box sitting in the ISP's DC. Basically the network you're connected to is optimized for feeding you lots of data and having you send back ACKs.

It could be if you packed both tos variables into a single atomic and the compare and swapped the combined value.

too bad it's just LARPing, underneath the covers it's the typical bloated Framer site.
hnav··on Better HTTP/1 connection reuse in Go 1.27
It drains up to 256K unread bytes period, it doesn't just optimize the case of the body not being read at all.

https://cs.opensource.google/go/go/+/refs/tags/go1.27.2:src/...

What it won't do looking at the code is handle streamed responses over transfer-encoding:chunked which means that if the other end is doing

  json.NewEncoder(responseWriter).Encode(&someStruct)
this optimization won't do anything.

HTTP libraries in general are tough because HTTP in practice requires understanding of at least DNS and TLS and in a lot of cases L4 networking as well. If you try to target application developers you end up with leaky abstractions (unread H/1 body draining behavior when you don't even know what HTTP version you're using) or a library low level enough that application developers don't know how to use it. See rust's hyper and reqwest as an example of an attempt at that split.

It's mostly the property of servers and clients that you interoperate with that don't speak H/2. There are other situations too like if you run a CDN and you're doing sendfile with kernel TLS, you can do stuff like the below

  sock.write('HTTP/1.1 200 OK\r\ncontent-length: ' + f.size() + '\r\n\r\n')
  sendfile(sock, f)
which wouldn't work with H2/H3. WebSockets are still in practice H/1 only (spec exists but is disabled in browsers). Another aspect is that if you're simply using HTTP as a preamble to 1 large (bidi) pipe, the extra framing and flow control of H/2 is just a performance handicap.
hnav··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
Basically not possible to do JIT (needed for decent JS perf) on iOS for 3p apps (since that requires pages that are both writable and executable) and then on top of that Apple bans 3p browsers specifically in markets where they're allowed to.

Even within California there are smog-exempt counties. This makes perfect sense, things like excess NOx simply don't matter if the population density is low enough which incidentally is also true of a lot of the rest of the country. CA is the strictest with smog-related, going as far as barring federal (non-CA) vehicles from being registered unless they're 7500+ miles on the odometer. Tint should be limited to 70% VLT nationally really, but that's another topic. Other than that some north-eastern states have safety inspections which makes total sense given the rust. By developed country standards we have it very easy.

Because not paying is tax evasion. If you go abroad, purchase a $50k watch, get a VAT refund then fail to declare, US Customs will fine you and probably pull your trusted traveler status. Are those people going to leave the US?

That's a highly contrived scenario. In reality the rich guy who employs both A & B is using tax avoidance strategies (including registering their Ferrari 812 in Montana) to pay single digit tax on their actual net worth growth and debt taken out against it, while A & B pay 20-35% on their W2 income.
hnav··on Court agrees with EFF: Utah's VPN law demands a technical impossibility
That's the way it was explained to me. Letting the fringe do what they're going to do anyway while inoculating the majority to outside influence is the goal and the difficulty setting is dynamic.

This line of reasoning never made sense to me. If the value of the land is going up enough to make an impact on the month to month financials then it makes sense to dip into the equity of the property. Presumably the overall equity still goes up? Beneficiaries still inherit more in fiat terms? What’s the issue here?

Also datacenters are absolutely not going to be built on ultra desirable land, why would the developer ruin the land value that way?

Apple literally has automatic commute notifications that tell you the optimal route (15 minutes via Easy St.), in this hypothetical world where your agent knows enough about you to suggest today's route, why doesn't your digital panopticon purveyor (be it Apple, Google, your car manufacturer) automatically pull that info the second you get into your car?

Much tighter electronic control of fuel, ignition and even cooling system combined with tighter tolerances and modern oil formulations. Wait for the cat to light off and the revs drop and then put it in gear and take it easy for the next couple of minutes of driving.

hnav··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
What do CVEs like this one mean for the likes of fly.io and cloudflare who use V8 for sandboxing 3p workloads? I guess they have some degree of KYC and some hardening outside the sandbox, but chaining this with a container escape running under a free tier account could pwn the host.
