hosel··on Anthropic's growth just flattened
Wouldn’t previous Opus models be able to solve them too? In my experience Sonnet is often lackluster.
hosel··on Why is every rationalist blog post way too long?
I’m an avid less wrong reader, but this is incredible
hosel··on OpenAI engineer arrested in bugging of executive conference room
Fall in line, be a good little citizen and you have nothing to worry about.
hosel··on Amazon's 'About You' section guesses oddly specific details about shoppers
I checked mine and it was pretty accurate. Nothing very concerning.
hosel··on Berthd
Exactly. My laptop just never goes to sleep, and it’s been great. What else do you need?
hosel··on Blindsight (Watts Novel)
>but they aren’t conscious You don’t know that. >language is orthogonal to consciousness I don’t think that is true either. The beings we think of being conscious all are social creatures and communicate in some form.
hosel··on Amazon introduces a redesigned Kindle family
Give me a new oasis please Amazon
hosel··on Pledge signed by President Trump and top AI leaders misspells the United States
Who cares? Minor spelling mistakes rank very low on my list of grievances with the administration.
hosel··on Individual locomotor bias drives counterclockwise motion in pedestrian crowds
The answer to my first question

>… we observed that CCW motion consistently emerged even when all pedestrians roaming in an enclosed space were left-handed or when their turning preference was to the right

hosel··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Wait until you hear a detailed explanation of the magic system for the 5th time. Still a good series.
hosel··on Classified estimates show the NSA is paying billions to test AI models
Why wouldn’t they be? How is this surprising. A drop in the bucket.
hosel··on Solitaire Alone Together
This is fun! I like the vibe of doing solitary activities in the “company” of other strangers. It’s neat. I like the screen saver
hosel··on I hate you Microsoft
What they did to windows is criminal. I honestly cannot believe the state of windows 11. I will never work a job again where I have to use windows.
hosel··on Taco Bell Programming (2010)
This is fun. You can get a long way with simple tools and a lot of the time it makes sense to not over complicate things, but obviously breaks down at a certain point. What about: State / failures / retries / indempotency / latency / multithreading correctness.. Data sets larger than one machine can hold. The fact that other humans (maybe not anymore) have to maintain your shell scripts.
hosel··on A warning about 'model welfare'
>AIs are not conscious. They do not feel, experience, or suffer. They do not have innate preferences or underlying motivations.

Opening paragraph, stated without evidence. Im not entirely convinced this is true. It likely is, but at some point it very well might stop being true.

hosel··on Waymo pulls over, calls cops on juvenile riders who had 'ghost gun"
Don’t brandish your weapon and no one will know you have it. Obviously the case here.
hosel··on What Is Your P(doom)?
For me, P(doom) = .50 If I wasn’t a dad I’d say higher
hosel··on Solving the Jane Street reverse engineering challenge
oh boy here we go again
hosel··on Improving our alignment and security efforts
It’s always interesting to me the sentiment here surrounding AI risk. As if it’s all a joke, or just a way to stifle competition. I think it’s become more apparent that this technology is dangerous and maybe catastrophically so. Getting your queries routed to a worse model sucks.. but bio hazards are real. It’s hard to patch biology, vaccines take time. Let alone the many other reasons for P(doom).. like the fact that our current systems don’t seem very aligned to me and we are rapidly handing off our thinking to them.
hosel··on Rakuten Kobo returns to U.S. retail as sales double
Is there anything out there comparable to my original Kindle Oasis? Mine has lived in airplane mode its whole life and I’m afraid for when it finally dies
hosel··on Get your Windows license refund
The server editions are junk too, lol.
hosel··on How Did Rogue Generate Its Random Dungeons?
I never got into Rogue, though I did love Nethack. If you’re into these actual rogue-likes, I picked up Caves of Qud recently, highly recommend.
hosel··on Ask HN: Is everybody's Claude weekly quota reset time the same?
Fun thought exercise: why would this be a terrible idea?
hosel··on There's never been a better time to commit financial fraud
Sweet! Anyone wanna buy a boat?
hosel··on What if useful AI is a fantasy?
I seriously don’t understand the naysayers around here. Have they just not used anything past gpt4? You can’t just outsource all of your thinking to them, but they’re obviously useful.
hosel··on MouthPad: A Tongue-Controlled Touchpad
I never even thought of that use case! What kind of stuff do you do on a computer while doing procedures? Like reference material? Tracking what you’ve done?
hosel··on C64 Basic Dungeon Crawler: Goblin Attack (C64 Basic Part 8)
Jail goblin sympathizers!
hosel··on The Kimi K3 Moment
Kimi K3 is really good, but it’s obviously worse than Fable, usually worse than Opus, in my experience.
hosel··on MorphoHDL: A minimalistic language for growing circuits
The visualizations are stunning!
hosel··on Grok CLI uploaded the whole home directory to GCS
You’re telling me LLMs aren’t actually magic?
