hrideshmg··on Nitter: Update Oct 10th seeking funding and legal help
I am quite surprised by the number of comments critical of Nitter.

I personally don't use it but frontends like these are very important in today's day and age.

As sad as it is, the majority of online discourse nowadays happens on platforms whose algorithms and interfaces are controlled by corporations.

A project like Nitter probably can't run legally, and that's okay. Custom mobile clients for Reddit still work after they banned it, life finds a way. I'm all for funding these projects though because at the end of the day, someone has to build it.

hrideshmg··on Web Search API
Surprised no one in this thread has mentioned running a self hosted search API.

I personally used to use Firecrawl's paid credits (got a bunch of em for free at an event) before I realized that they allow you to self-host your own instance (albeit missing some features I never use anyways).

It's been working really well for my agents, I even hosted a small observability tool that proxies the requests so I can see how many are failing and the percentages are always below 2%.

talk to any recent computer science graduate. You'll quickly realize how.
hrideshmg··on No AI Fridays
the flow state isn't something that is triggered by music. It can help maybe, but it's not a pre-requisite.

It's something common to a lot of creative fields, that moment where u enter a sort of hyper-focused state where the line between you and the code blurs and you operate at peak efficiency.

It quite literally feels like overclocking your brain. I miss it a lot.

hrideshmg··on More than half of adults in U.S. say they lack basic statistical understanding
Stats is one of those subjects which displays the dunning kruger effect really well.

Sure on the surface stuffile averages, medians, standard deviations etc are quite easy but the moment you start going deeper you realize how difficult and un-intuitive things start to get.

I'm still in the valley of despair, and frankly it's probably the best place to be in for the average person. Understand the basics and know just enough to realize how easy it is to mislead people with it.

hrideshmg··on To become a better writer, read as much as you can
One interesting thing I've just come to notice is that ever since I started using AI agents, ive not had a single moment of 'flow-state' whereas I used to semi-frequently have such experiences prior.

I feel like some parallels can be drawn between the reading and coding brain in this regard.

hrideshmg··on Factories are just rooms
To make it worse, I feel like the idea is really good, but I have no clue why on earth this requires 'AI'

I've seen similar clocks (software) that work by just storing a bunch of quotes and sentences from all kinds of different literature and then randomly picking one to show (with credits)

You get the same effect and (bonus) you get exposed to some piece of art that you may not have known about before.

hrideshmg··on Factories are just rooms
It's really interesting how the education system works, you walk into a room of 7-year olds and you'd be amazed at the level of curiosity and interest those kids have for everything around them, you can literally see it in their eyes.

Fast forward a few years and all of that is gone, in teenage classrooms. There is no "awe", it has meticulously been sucked out of them.

I really love maker spaces exactly for this reason, it helps keep that spark alive.

hrideshmg··on Slow breathing modulates brain function and risk behavior
I don't think this is necessary at all, anecdotal but I used to have terrible social anxiety and fear of public speaking but after putting myself through it for several rounds it just kind of clicked.

Eventually, your body learns to adapt and understand that this thing you dreaded isn't so bad after all

Wonder if there's anything like this for Android? If not, it might make for a pretty fun/interesting side project
hrideshmg··on To have a moral stance on AI is to be an outcast, and it sucks
I was thinking about this the other day. Surely, a datacenter, even one optimized for machine learning workloads could switch gears and do other kinds of computations.

Even if the bubble were to pop, i feel like the worst that could happen is that we would have a bunch of inactive datacenters that could be switched on to meet demands of the growing internet. Kind of like how nuclear plants operate.

cmiiw to think along these lines though.

hrideshmg··on To have a moral stance on AI is to be an outcast, and it sucks
Kinda weird that the authors response to a 'friend' using Siri to query how long a medication lasts was not wanting to hang with them anymore rather than educating them on how AI can hallucinate information.

Having a moral stance is good, but isolating yourself rather than fighting for it and then complaining about being an outcast is utterly puzzling.

hrideshmg··on Using AI to write better code more slowly
As a junior, i do actually enjoy going back and forth with the AI discussing different ways to implement something and exploring alternatives.

More often than not, I'd have an architectural idea that I'm not that confident in. The process of talking with the LLM takes a long time but it helps me sharpen the initial approach or even come up with a new one depending on the requirements.
