human··on Microsoft Outlook Is Down
Yes, and it seems to be global. MS hasn’t even updated their status page though.
human··on Why new hires often get paid more than existing employees
Do you think hiring takes longer at your company because of this policy?
human··on Why new hires often get paid more than existing employees
As a manager, I often need to hire someone fast and will end up having to go above market to get good talent to make the move. I can’t afford to increase everyone else’s salary by the same amount. I will do it because I want to add help quickly to the team to avoid burnouts. It’s such a tough spot to be in. On top of all that, it’s hard to judge the level of experience compared to current employeed before the person gets onboarded.

human··on Water
This one is insane!
human··on Bill C-18: Google to remove news links in Canada over online news law
As a Canadian, I feel like this is terrible news. From a web publisher point of view, I do agree that Google is going to far sometimes by embeding the content directly in the SERP. They take it so far that most of the time you don’t even need to click on the article to get the summary.
human··on HP disables customers’ printers if they use ink cartridges from cheaper rivals
I know this has been asked a million times but when are we going to get a great printer company? Right now we have to settle for the least bad manufacturer.
human··on Cheat Sheets for Developers
It’s called a bandwagon. Get on board.
human··on Twitter's Recommendation Algorithm
If I were Elon, first thing I would have done is ctrl+f “elon”…
human··on The floppy disk just won’t die
I was sure this was going to speak of the floppy disk icon for saving; not the actual floppy disks!
human··on After Dark Screensavers in CSS
setTimeout to trigger the screensaver. Restart the timeout on mouse move.
human··on Ask HN: What would it take for an AI to convince us it is conscious?
Thank you. Feels good to know this is s real thing!
human··on 1Password wants to remove its final password
I already open my 1password with fingerprint on my Mac and with Face ID on my iPhone. But if something goes wrong, I still have my strong master password. I don’t see the problem this is trying to solve.
human··on Ask HN: What would it take for an AI to convince us it is conscious?
I still wonder some days if I’m the only "real" conscious observer and all of you are just "programs". There’s really no way to tell even with humans. And the only reason why we assume we are all having a similar human experience is because we all seem to be made of the same stuff.
human··on Build your own fast, persistent KV store
Sometimes you just want to have fun. But I agree, I don’t know why he suggests it would be fast…
human··on Why Google prepend while(1); to their JSON responses
If you’re visiting a webpage with such a script, it may be for your own good to freeze it.
human··on Wikipedia's “moderate yet systematic” liberal citation bias
If you think you hold the truth, you don’t. If you think your position is unbiased, you’re wrong. We are all flawed and ignorant humans and recognizing it is the first step to enlightenment.
human··on Why big tech companies need so many people
As an MBA actually running a medium size business, this article makes my head hurt. I think all these layoffs will be a healthy purge for the better allocation of resources, aka the economy.
human··on FCC threatens to disconnect Twilio for illegal robocalls
Someone should fix phone calls. It shouldn’t be so easy to spam and phone numbers should be clearly associated with the business behind it. Something similar to SSL certs. Also, I remember seeing in the Twilio API an option to add a call reason. It would be great to have a 50 char sentence explaining why I’m being called so I can decide whether to answer or not.
human··on Intercepting t.co links using DNS rewrites
It’s not just Twitter. Maybe this tool could be made to uncloack a list of known url shorteners.
human··on Ask HN: Why is everybody copying layoffs?
Yes, but that has nothing to do with the technical side. No amount of engineers would bring back advertising dollars to Twitter.
human··on Ask HN: Why is everybody copying layoffs?
The size of these layoffs are minimal in comparison with the hires they have done during the pandemic. I see this as normalization more than anything else.
human··on Pluralsight lays off 400 employees – 20% workforce
Am I the only one who is tired of the classic "As your CEO, I own this outcome and take full responsibility for the decisions that got us here."?

What does that even mean? Taking responsability should mean going down with the ship.

human··on Moving Away from UUIDs (2018)
Something I don't understand: how are UUIDs not safe given that they are probably better than 99.9999% of passwords generated by users?
human··on Two weeks of dealing with Google as a developer
If the future of customer-service is full of AI like “Anthony”, I’m moving to the woods.
human··on Technology Choices for My SaaS in Retrospect
I applaude you for keeping things simple, not over-engineering, and resisting the urge to use the latest tech.
human··on The quest to make a 'contagious' animal vaccine
I did not know but thank you for pointing it out. I know that different cities have different levels of chemicals in the water. Is there a science on the best composition for water? What if we added antidepressants to water? Would that be ethical?
human··on The quest to make a 'contagious' animal vaccine
Our laws need to be reviewed for this. I think the whole idea of adding fluoride to drinking water to improve dental health is a good and older example of this. If I will receive any form of therapeutic I should have to give my consent. We are starting to have stronger laws for personal data than for our bodily autonomy it seems.
human··on The quest to make a 'contagious' animal vaccine
Checking-in.
human··on CSS's !important was added because of laws about font size for some text
Sometimes a tool has been invented to do X but people end up using it for Y because it’s so useful. I think "!important" is a good example. Like duct tape being used for much more than attaching ducts.
