hydrolox··on WorldTUI: I trained a 360M model to pretend to be a terminal
The craziest thing with that is you could "install" lynx browser and "browse" the alternate universe web within this terminal. At the time -- the whole chat bot and LLM thing was very new-- it seemed crazy and impossible that that kind of behavior was possible from "just some next token prediction"! Like, if you "created" a file on this terminal and it was saved , or downloaded a webpage etc. It sucked when they put in some guardrails and the terminal was no more

that's just how language works.. do you think that in your day to day life, you have never used a single word differently than how it was conceived of being used 10, 50, or 100 years ago?

hydrolox··on America.gov
you might have to lead it on a bit. I first typed in a few prompts similar to "if i have the president george washington, and JFK, how many total presidents do I have?".. "What about if I have an odd number of presidents?" etc.
hydrolox··on America.gov
It can be kind of jailbroken. I got it to prove that square root of 2 is irrational by asking if the ratio of two whole numbers of presidents can equal the square root of 2.
hydrolox··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
I've literally never heard of this guy until today, they're not my guru. I am just showing where in the post the criticism was covered
hydrolox··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
From the blog:

> Although Zitron's past predictions have generally been wrong, maybe he'll be right about something in the future. Perhaps some of these companies will have valuations decline for some reason. But, even if there's some kind of massive AI crash and OpenAI and Anthropic go to zero, in terms of the societal impact, if on top of that, some other event occurs that prevents further progress in models beyond whatever AI labs have internally right now, that's still going to result in a fair amount of change. Which companies are successful will change who gets rich, but particular companies failing won't stop changes that fall out of current or next generation model capabilities from happening; it just moves around who benefits the most.

> If Zitron ends up being right about some company or other collapsing, that's pretty uninteresting to me compared to how capabilities have developed and will develop, where he's been wrong to date. It also happens that he's been wrong about the financial predictions he's made to date, but that doesn't really interest me, though I included a number of financial predictions for completeness.

Not sure how you can "get the big picture right" while having many egregiously wrong predictions.

What are your sources? From 2013: > Leading up to the construction and just afterwards NE 65th St performed very similar to both controls, however two quarters after the project was finished NE 65th St experienced a 350% increase in sales index, followed by another jump to 400% sales index the following quarter.[1]

From 2020 [2]: > "Both the trend analysis and DID analysis show that the protected bike lane on Second Avenue corridor positively impacted employment, especially in the retail sector, when compared to the Fourth Avenue control corridor"

> "In conclusion, the protected bike lane on Broadway triggered a significant employment increase in the food services industry after installation, indicating an improvement in business vitality as a result."

The overall study finds that

> - On the Second Avenue corridor, the protected two-way bike lane contributed to higher employment and improved business vitality in the retail sector. - On Broadway Avenue, we find that the protected bike lane triggered a significant positive impact on food services employment after installation, indicating an improvement in business vitality as a result."

and > In terms of retail service sector, we found either mixed results or insignificant results. [...] However, the insignificant results may be significant in this context, indicating that there does not appear to be a negative causal impact of right-of-way or parking lane removal on economic outcomes.

Anecdotally, many people in Seattle seem to use the bike lanes, even to commute to work. I also saw a lot of people using them during the world cup.

Yea while reading, I just didn't understand how you end up LLM writing the article? Clearly, the data and writeup are real. But, was it "edited" with an LLM? It looks closer to ~the entire thing being LLM written. I finished reading because the topic is interesting, but the LLM writing style is difficult to bear.. and I agree with your point that trying to fool us that it's human with `--` is just absurd

Yes, the analogy habit is the most annoying of all. Overall formatting for me is doable, if it didn't divide up an answer into these silly arbitrary categories with useless analogies. I've tried adding in my user preferences to never use analogies but it inevitably falls back into that habit.

I get what you're arguing but isn't "Jail the President for doing Presidential stuff" a bit charitable? "Nope, don't see it" isn't so simple, I think a lot of people would argue that this follows from the rule of law set down in the constitution in the form of things like the supremacy clause and implied by our entire legal/political structure.

Although I haven't followed his project at all, one fully free alternative which gives similar insight (how logic gates build up to a full computer) is the nand2tetris[1] course. It starts with just a nand gate and then creates all necessary components to make a simple programmable computer, all simulated virtually so you don't need any physical components.
