Awesome! Joby needs trained pilots so that may be a bottleneck to scaling. I am guessing they would have to create autonomous air taxis like EHang to scale.
I think there would be open-source machine variants that many people could own and modify. As population growth is slowing, finite resources should hopefully have a better and wider distribution among people as they would not be constraints.
Incredible news! This should be replicated in tropics everywhere. In Singapore, the government is using Wolbachia mosquitoes to control the spread of vector mosquitoes, which looks like another effective solution.
In a professional context, I use it to help a client (chemicals company) optimize their deliveries to customers. They have > 100 production sites and thousands of customers, so LP is used to allocate customers to production sites based on the product-cost and availability at supply site and trucking costs. We have evaluated multiple solvers (Gurobi/ Llamasoft/ GAMS/ LocalSolver etc) for optimizing deliveries, as well as evaluating the cost impact of changes to the delivery network.
IMHO a HS student learning Calculus should first learn the subject with pen and paper for a while before programming. It is important to work through the problems and think about the fundamental concepts involved, rather than thinking about the syntax involved in coding their solutions. Practising with pen and paper helps to internalize the subject matter better.
For Vitamin D synthesis, the sun needs to be at an angle of 50 degrees or higher. Depending on the latitude where you live, the sun may not get that high all winter so you may need to supplement.
The most important thing I learned on Tralfamadore was that when a person dies he only appears to die. He is still very much alive in the past, so it is very silly for people to cry at his funeral. All moments, past, present and future, always have existed, always will exist. The Tralfamadorians can look at all the different moments just that way we can look at a stretch of the Rocky Mountains, for instance. They can see how permanent all the moments are, and they can look at any moment that interests them. It is just an illusion we have here on Earth that one moment follows another one, like beads on a string, and that once a moment is gone it is gone forever.
This is how I have learnt various languages - by speaking while learning. However, Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis expounds that language acquisition occurs only during exposure to new language and not while speaking. Do people who give up learning a language still understand what is being spoken by the other person in that lang, even if they themselves may not be able to construct a sentence?
I think Netflix has lost touch with their consumer base, with most changes such as removal of the rating system being universally criticized. I cancelled my subscription recently as I realized that while Netflix has a lot of shows, there is a dearth of quality content and the search function is not useful. With shows like Friends and Office leaving, there is not much to draw people who like leaving it on in the background. Also, the auto-playing of trailers at full volume is super-annoying.
Looks cool. I currently use finviz, and the insider trading feature looks similar. Are you looking to quantify the risks anytime in the future, ie how would revenues/ earnings be affected if they materialized.
While researching probiotics I came across a recent study that has found increased obesity in response to VSL #3. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29493105. While I do not have any details on the study methodology, I think it is best to be cautious while trying out supplements.
A study has shown that the mind tends to wander more when listening to audiobooks compared to reading. https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fpsyg.2013.0089...
Personally, I only listen to audiobooks while cleaning or driving, and so retain much lesser than when I read, which is when I am completely engrossed in the material.
Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor elucidates the principles of value investing as opposed to risky gambling. This is a book recommended by Warren Buffett too.
That would still be quantifying values against the tangible axes of time and/or money. There are still various other intangible factors such as happiness, goodwill etc which are immeasurable, yet contribute to the overall picture.
