hyperbovine··on Ink droplets in motion snag top prize in Nikon Small World contest
“Ole Bielfeldt’s winning image embodies what makes Nikon Small World so powerful…”

PR speak is so awful. You made it a whole seven words without talking about yourself, congratulations.

Yeesh that is creepy.
hyperbovine··on New iMac with M6
Because then they can't sell you their overpriced 27" screen.
hyperbovine··on Will it be a golden age or a dark age for mathematics (and science)?
Whereas OpenAI and Anthropic…
hyperbovine··on Muse Spark Open
Tbf that wasn’t such an outrageous proposition until about ~6 months ago.
hyperbovine··on New Apple TV 4K
Man "Even more Siri" is not the headline feature I was hoping for.
hyperbovine··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
Less than the countless hours thousands of mathematicians spent over the course of decades unsuccessfully attacking these problems...?
hyperbovine··on OpenAI withdraws three mathematical results
Isn't it possible that all of the integers that have been or will ever be encountered, anywhere, any time, in human history, number less than 2^182? In which case you could argue that integer multiplication is O(1) via LUT :)
hyperbovine··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
Open models are 12 months behind frontier models. What companies spent $11 billion on last quarter they will be able to get at cost in a year. Meanwhile Anthropic is losing $40+ billion a year. I just don’t see how this ends well for them.
hyperbovine··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
Turns out it’s very difficult to make a philosophical case for morality without presupposing the existence of a God.
hyperbovine··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
Technology != company. The tech is here to stay but we still don’t have an example of a company that has figured out how to make a profit off of it. That will come, and it might be OpenAI or Anthropic that does it … but it might not.
hyperbovine··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
What's the point of NA Radler when regular Radler is already in the 1-2% range?
hyperbovine··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
You're just describing normal aging though. People have been experiencing this (particularly #2) since time immemorial. The question is why young people are not arriving to fill the void left by you (and me), as they always have. I agree with other posters, it's some combination of economics, weed, and culture.
hyperbovine··on The Millennium Problems for Biology
This. Part of the allure of the Clay Millenium prizes is that some of the best minds in the field came up with them. Let’s hear what Eric Lander, Jennifer Doudna, Aviv Regev, Feng Zhang, David Baker, Robert Weinberg, George Church, Bert Vogelstein, etc have to say.
hyperbovine··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
For one thing it was, I’m guessing, 100% written by actual humans. An increasingly rare phenomenon.
hyperbovine··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
But think of all the IPO Monopoly money they just generated.
hyperbovine··on Stockfish 19
Magnus cannot even beat his phone. We're long past the point of humans being able to compete with the `fish, any version, any platform.
hyperbovine··on How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy
The same could be said of your post.

OpenAI (claim to) show the existence of *a* finite time singularity. It could stimulate more research in PDE solving, and maybe physics, but it has zero impact on practical applications, that I can see. The Millenium problems were chosen based on hardness not practical relevance.

hyperbovine··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Two of these things will definitely work. One of them is completely untested, poorly understood and with potentially massive consequences for the climate and food production.
hyperbovine··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
Hey at least they are trying.
hyperbovine··on Hacking IKEA Furniture
I absolutely love hacking ikea furniture, specifically their kitchen cabinets. If you need a bunch of boxes as the base for a project and you’re thinking about building it the traditional way, ie 3/4 birch plywood, I can almost guarantee you that the cost of raw materials alone is going to be more than picking up an similar sized kitchen cabinet from ikea. Yes it’s mdf but in my experience they are super durable and it has never been an issue. Writing this from atop my hacked ikea storage bed :-)
hyperbovine··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
This is why so many iOS apps these days are based on Electron/Capacitor/React Native/etc.

tbf, I don't think Wagyu cows were that thrilled about their lot in life before Wagyu became a thing, either.

Also what decade.
hyperbovine··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
That is so interesting! Thanks!
hyperbovine··on China’s open-weights AI strategy is winning
Try instructing Codex to (say) fine-tune a language model based on a collection of books you've got saved. You will find yourself admonished, repeatedly and at length, not to utilize copyrighted materials to train language models, by an AI who owes its entire existence to that very act.

These models might be smart but they're not close to being able to savor irony.

hyperbovine··on Stripe and Advent have made a joint offer to acquire PayPal – sources
PayPal is sort of the Facebook of digital payments: they stopped being directly relevant years ago, but own many of the things that you or someone you know continue to use. Venmo being the obvious one, but also Braintree, Xoom, Honey, Bill Me Later, etc.
hyperbovine··on Codex Micro
Is it April already?
hyperbovine··on Codex starts encrypting sub-agent prompts
Feels strongly like we're in the late-stage-AI-unicorn phase. If this is really their moat then the Chinese companies will win.
