hypfer··on Show HN: SlideBySide – Present slides without sharing your screen
I know Show HN rules want you to be extra nice to people, but this is indistinguishable in execution from a honeypot, so anyone uploading their company slides to some random service like this one will likely be fired on the spot for gross negligence.

I see your idea and I suppose there is value in it, but the problem of screen sharing is basically fictional compared to the real problem of someone just uploading company data (+ metadata!) to a random service some random person came up with.

Screen sharing only shares pixels and does so through parties that the economy considers trustworthy enough.

This is not going to work as the SaaS you seem to envision it to be. It might work for a self-hosted internal service thing or a group of friends though.

___

Thinking about this, I suspect that at least one naive bored corporate guy browsing HN will have tried this out with a random pptx they had lying around on their work computer. The data is now.. somewhere.

So this could be an actual honeypot.

Yeah exactly. I was referring to exactly such businesses.

But, to put my previous point more bluntly, if you do this, you cannot hire idiots, because they otherwise start ruining everything.

Someone needs to hire idiots though, which is why this concept cannot work for all.

The alternative to that is idiot removal, however, that has proven to be a rather complex ethics problem where we've collectively rightfully decided that it is so radioactive, we will no longer entertain such thoughts.

My point is that with such a wealth cap, we will get some co-ops, but we also will have to get something else. And I have not yet found an idea what that could be

hypfer··on The Grid, a factory-scale robot in Massachusetts that builds PCBs on demand
I hate to say it, but this kinda looks like that whole tariff horror show might have had a point.

Though, of course, if this has been in operation for five years already, that cannot have been the spark for this. But it might be what it needs to become fully viable.

Whether the guy responsible for said horror show actually thought this far of course remains questionable.

Is this supposed to play Linkin Park in my head or is that a neuron misfire?
hypfer··on Claude Code regularly sends each background agent’s transcript to its model
With the ever-increasing amount of paper cuts one gets from using their products, I wonder how long this will really go on?

After all, for most of the work people seem to be doing daily, Claude kinda isn't.. necessary? In fact, for a lot of tasks, not using it leads to better results in my experience.

There are things that only it can reasonably accomplish, but if every interaction with it hurts you in various ways (like this one), then, eventually, I do not see that working out for them anymore.

But perhaps this is just a way to push the numbers a bit further up for the IPO? That would make a lot of sense to me.

hypfer··on It's now official, tech is the new tobacco
Does that mean that the cool kids on the schoolyard now use tech while wearing leather jackets to signal rebellion?

Is it finally the time for the nerds to shine?

Idk I feel like your opinions are "crazytalk" as you say.

So who is right? is it the real person with a real identity attached to it, or is it the 7 month old account pointing nowhere?

I guess we'll never know.

The only thing that might genuinely be hard here is strategic leadership of a company.

Because while some can be transferred into something that is partially worker-owned, not all workers are suited to be given that sort of leverage.

So that might be worth pondering to come up with a solution that makes stuff not collapse. Because the reality of human resources is that the quality is underwhelming.

hypfer··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
You'd probably want to have it be dynamic in some way, as most monetary systems that mostly work tend to have some level of inflation to keep things moving.

But yes. Something like that.

Can we just get rid of these bots?
hypfer··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
There is not one discussion without this "argument".

But, let's say, they do. And they also have to stay out. Wouldn't that be.. kinda nice actually?

Your taxes would stay the same either way. Yes, of course, there would be less luxury spending, but the millions of normal people still exist. And they spend and they produce.

Why not let the ultra wealthy just leave and idk go to mars or something? Kick them out, seize their assets, run society without them if they do not want to be part of it anyway.

hypfer··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
The same wealth could be tied up in assets that are _owned_ by the americans and offer services to them.

Services that have an incentive to serve said americans, because it is them who own them.

You are completely right that this capital is super useful for society. It would just be infinitely more useful if it was in the hands of society.

It does - in truly german fashion - make one wonder how efficient that SV machine is.

The ratio of getting shit done per dollar seems a bit low. Even with Germany continuing to be.. uh.. not exactly on top of its game.

hypfer··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
Not sure about that "most people here". Maybe in SV? Not in Europe.

If I were to liquidate my whole existence, I'd probably end up at maybe 300k€? Maybe? And that is already rather high up here in Germany.

hypfer··on Hunger beats tenure: Advice for junior engineers
IMO the right choice.

It is either active PR or it is the kool aid seeping into this random guys thoughts and equally poisoning them.

> As a hiring manager at Anthropic, I stopped asking candidates to do them.

Before engaging with this content, one should keep in mind the very specific circumstances, that person is working in.

There might be learnings or thoughts that carry over to other businesses, but chances are high that most don't.

hypfer··on Introducing LFM3: Every Modality for Specialized Intelligence
In a few words: Why should I care about this?

What makes it cool? What should make me go "oh yeah let's go"?

From what I can see by skimming the document, I would assume "something something specialized use-cases", but what does that mean? And what does it mean assuming I have attention deficit?

hypfer··on Mossad Has Devices Like the Exploding Pagers in "Every Country You Can Imagine" (2025)

hypfer··on Mossad Has Devices Like the Exploding Pagers in "Every Country You Can Imagine" (2025)
Not implausible, but also not implausible to lie there.

Why wouldn't you claim that you have this kind of capability? It only is beneficial to you especially when you're Mossad.

It is a very weird thing to say though, given that the pagers targeted a very specific group doing very specific things with very specific processes using very specific tools (the pagers).

The logistics of that don't check out. That's not something that just lurks "everywhere".

So Devices "like" the pagers.. what does that mean?

I suppose cyber implants (for the lack of a better word) would be plausible, but also stretching the whole "like" comparison.

Yes, these agencies have implants in tech. All of them do. Where's the news?

Just ask claude dude. It might genuinely be better at understanding human communication.
hypfer··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
This whole discussion was not about you or what you do, but about the idea of blocking Datacenter ASNs against scraping and other bot activity.

Which then was countered with a broad range of classic HN dysfunction, hostility and pedantry.

When the truth of the matter is that it's actually just a decent idea for some use-cases and a less-decent idea for others.

But instead of acknowledging that nuance, an explosion of nonsense happened here.

I genuinely do not understand why you've suddenly started talking about yourself and your own residential proxy use? Why does that belong here?

hypfer··on I will no longer upload to NEW
You've completely missed the point to a degree where you're not even replying to my comment and I am not going to waste time on explaining it. Maybe Opus 5.5 is clever enough to explain the confusion here. I believe it is.
hypfer··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Can you people please for the love of God stop missing the bigger picture?

Yes, yes there is always something. Yes there can always be workarounds.

But that is not the point. The point is that things are made harder. That is the point. To make things harder

Not impossible. Harder

Jesus Christ. It's all just a game of probabilities and friction. One needs to understand that to understand reality.

hypfer··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
It just needs one case where someone manages to attribute it to the corp using these illicit services.

Either by technical means or by a whistleblower.

Which might be a gamble worth doing, but also might not. And regardless, the fact that it is a gamble alone slows down velocity.

hypfer··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
That was not the question. There are many factors driving crime, yes.

The point however is that this is crime and crime is incorrect and fundamentally shouldn't exist.

But, more importantly, as a serious business, you do not want to be seen doing crime or benefitting from crime or supporting crime or being near crime. At least in a working society that is.

hypfer··on I will no longer upload to NEW
Yes that is obvious, but I still do not understand it, the same way I do not understand why someone would crunch and do drugs just to attempt to meet a deadline and then still don't, instead of going "this isn't working, we will stop and pivot".

It's just such an obviously terrible execution. Why would you throw it into production when doing literally anything else - and that includes just setting the whole server on fire - is less damaging.

(Not hyperbole. Loss of trust and loss of trust in ones own judgement is the highest and harshest price in this industry)

hypfer··on I will no longer upload to NEW
Haha what the fuck.

I've never considered updating iTerm. Apparently that lazieness was the right call?

Jesus. What the hell. What does that sudden AI image even offer? I guess it would make some sense in a "docs page" context (even though there it would too be slop), but as a tooltip of a menu option?

Gotta say though.. that is so unhinged, one has to respect the human ingenuity behind it. No LLM can come up with an idea so batshit insane. They're too mid for that.

hypfer··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
Residential proxies are something that is not supposed to exist.

In the sense that you do not have people that actively sell those services via their home internet connection.

The whole thing just exists because there's this whole predatory ecosystem that uses malware and malicious devices to sell that without the owners even knowing.

That makes it legally questionable, even though I guess technically it is legal enough? Still radioactive, so as a serious business, you do not want to be seen doing that.

hypfer··on I will no longer upload to NEW
I do not understand why people keep building these anti-human LLM systems.

It just needs ca 5 seconds to realize "oh damn, I would not want to be at the receiving end of this" and conclude that it's probably a bad idea.

Why does this keep happening?

Especially since the idea of having such automated reviews probably isn't bad. But why mess up the execution like this basically every single time?

hypfer··on Roblox downloaded 145GB models from us (including adult content) without asking
I have to ask: is this an LLM? :D

Why would you just try the insulting harder? Why not pivot to literally any other strategy lmao

I mean I guess this would work on a lot of people here, but three times in a row? Come on man. Skill issue
