I used to solve hardcore problems, now I just talk to Claude and try to dodge layoffs left and right.

iExploder··on Ask HN: Europeans, what keyboard layout do you use for programming?
us querty for ages, i never use the accented characters my language has as it is easy to understand the meaning of what i type even without them. i think the same would apply to german
iExploder··on Ask HN: Where do you find the interesting jobs?
try embedded development, preferably a company in consumer market that makes a product every two or so years

i worked in audio, hifi streamers, synth keyboards, etc, you get HW to play with and these companies can be so small you get to do different things once in a while

iExploder··on Ask HN: Do we need another build system?
people trying to carve up a piece of universe for themselves. don't hate the player, hate the game. and use cmake...
iExploder··on Ask HN: Anyone else disillusioned from working in tech
in today's world there are ways to make the drudgery a bit less soul-crushing. work from home, flexible working time or 80% arrangements, gig economy.. I would say its actually getting much better for the average drone.
iExploder··on Ask HN: Why do companies not list your weaknesses in rejection emails?
receiving feedback sounds good on the paper, and i understand how it would be helpful and ideal to receive it, but its just not how the real world works, as there is no business incentive to provide the feedback.

i would say in tech its fairly easy to establish hard skill competence during the interview. the remaining portion of why person gets hired is more fuzzy and is much like dating. they like you or they don't. asking why not rarely leads to any response or a meaningful response, because a lot of times they don't even know why, it might just be a gut feeling thing.

i wouldn't obsess about the outcome, as long as person is working on themselves in all areas and keeps trying, success will come.

iExploder··on Ask HN: Why do companies not list your weaknesses in rejection emails?
Why even care? You should be aware whether u have the credentials and experience. Most of the time the rejection is a subjective decision by a small group of people. And as of lately big tech is freezing their hiring anyway.

Keep applying and don't wait for any one company to give any feedback.

iExploder··on Ask HN: Leaving Germany – where to find quality of life as experienced engineer?
the trick to living in Europe as a software engineer is to work remotely and live in small town / village outside of big cities with overpriced properties and people of questionable morals and goals.

special achievement for tough lads / lassies is to move to dodgy eastern countries like czech republic, croatia, romania to save on tax. forget about doing the grown up stuff in english there and when your child gets sick or needs education you need to fly right back to daddy germany.

portugal and ireland also have tax incentives but I dont think the quality of life, services or health care are comparable to germany.

all in all since brexit, interesting and realistic solution seems to be switzerland, but it has its own quirks.

in my opinion you would do better to stay in Germany but move to a more sensible location than Berlin. Get a piece of land where still possible. Germany is a safe bet and will be last one to crumble of the EU states, on paper...

iExploder··on Ask HN: Budget season. How to justify rate?
hmm, apart from already mentioned statements by other posters; I think inflation as we see it today, is perfectly understandable reason to justify increase in rate, companies increase rates for services all the time, sometimes accompanied only by meaningless jargon

in the end I think it all comes down to who has more leverage:

- can they find someone else for the old rate + risk and cost of hiring someone new

- can you walk away and find another customer for the new rate

iExploder··on Programmers. Do you work on your personal projects inside your 9-5?
how does one measure how much work can employer extract from employee if position is 'filling a role' as opposed to having an agreement for amount of hours per day?
iExploder··on Programmers. Do you work on your personal projects inside your 9-5?
interesting... here in Europe it always states how many hours employee needs to work daily, how many days per week and often times includes clauses for how much overtime hours and overtime pay is to be expected
iExploder··on Programmers. Do you work on your personal projects inside your 9-5?
> It seems the underlying assumption is that every second belongs to the company while you’re “on the clock”

this assumption is correct for vast majority of employed people

you would have to refer to your specific employment contract. for me personally it always stated the amount of hours I'm expected to be working per day or month.

spoken gentle-human's agreement is one thing, what is written in the contract is another and always legally binding...

I would like to hear someone tell their boss they spend 1 or more hours every day working on a personal project on company's time, if its not dishonest it should not be a problem and will be met with praise and compliments I'm sure...

iExploder··on Programmers. Do you work on your personal projects inside your 9-5?
anyone who works on their personal side projects on company's times and hardware, risk that the results will become ownership of the company. it's also a bit dishonest and immoral tbh...

I would check the employment contract asap.

iExploder··on Ask HN: My friends house burnt down; Instagram banned him; what can he do?
These are not just some services, but rather gov unregulated global social platforms.

Getting banned from them for some people is equivalent to being banished from society in pre informational age.

Yes your don't need to visit your local market, you can always forage for berries in a forrest, good luck with that.

iExploder··on Proposal for a full-fledged C String
ahhh thanks, now that makes more sense to me
iExploder··on Proposal for a full-fledged C String
exactly my thoughts, generally GPL any version or (L)GPLv3 or greater means your library will never be included in a commercial product, hence crippling the mass adaption
iExploder··on Proposal for a full-fledged C String
> No prob with size_t and char* I think. They'll nicely solidify to 4 bytes on 32-bit platforms. I'd need to test for maximum though in size_t .len case.

I mean on 32 bit platform the offset to union tag would be different depending on the struct the union holds, unless I'm missing something

iExploder··on Proposal for a full-fledged C String
interesting idea, I had a few questions when looking at it

- afaik size_t and char* types are implementation dependent, not sure if this could cause problems, maybe you already thought about the implications?

- are you hard set on using GPL?

iExploder··on Ask HN: Are junior developers entitled to work machines?
It's a crappy company that can't business expense 2k on employees work station...

In case you are in shit part of the world (everything except USA and west EU) complete couple of years to put something on your CV then get the hell outta there, otherwise start looking for a new job right away

iExploder··on Do you find your job fulfilling?
For benefit of others I'm willing to entertain the thought of worthwhile companies existing out there. Its not my goal to discourage anyone seeking fulfillment in their job, just be aware its ok if its just a thing most of us do to put food on the table, there are other more important things in life!

My experience is by fair amount on the opposite spectrum. I worked with a few small to medium sized companies, seen things and know _some_ companies thrive on their employees not understanding how personal income, corporate, dividend tax and write offs work not to mention other gray areas or outright shady practices.

Most people didn't experience what happens during mass layoffs caused by mismanagement, talk about owners and management taking on the business risk, until they don't...

iExploder··on Do you find your job fulfilling?
colleagues are what makes or breaks the job experience, rest of it is just business and if you are not part of c-suite be prepared for short end of the stick
iExploder··on Do you find your job fulfilling?
let's make a thought experiment, if you make X amount of money and you were given this amount every month for rest of your life and could do whatever you wanted, would you still keep going to your current place of employment for 40+hours a week?

and if so, what % of people in the world you think would say the same?

of course I was writing in generalities in my previous post, I'm not commenting on the odd neurosurgeon or astronaut who realized their childhood dreams, let's be real here

and yeah, if I ever have "employees" it will be on partner to partner basis with sharing risk and profit, I don't dream of subjugating other human beings for my benefit while keeping them in the dark and scheming, which to be honest is what most companies do...

iExploder··on Do you find your job fulfilling?
Unless one is a complete corporate simp, a fulfilling job is an oxymoron at best.

Job is a job, you are being paid money in exchange for your time, labour and skills, everything else surrounding it is just BS to make you more productive and happy go lucky robot, therefore increasing someone's bottom line.

Sure a new job might be exciting, but there is a t- after which any individual capable of thought will realize what's going on.

Seek fulfilment elsewhere, maybe take the money you make at a job and put it into something that makes you happy, good luck!

iExploder··on Ask HN: Freelancers, what's your hourly rate?
embedded dev, 50p/h, if you are unhappy with your rates shoot me over your contracts!:)
iExploder··on Ask HN: How do you deal with remote people working multiple full-time jobs?
> There’s some irony in the business the OP describes hires programmers out to multiple customers. That means the owners and managers of the company are working multiple jobs.

nailed it :) its fine when we pocket the US cost / EU dev salary difference, but its not ok when you try to go solo and do the same

its not exactly breakthrough idea, don't get weird when someone else tries to have a go at it

iExploder··on Ask HN: How do you deal with remote people working multiple full-time jobs?
I was writing in the context of Europe as OP mentioned the company is located in Europe.

In that context you can take your math and divide by 10 to get the mainland EU average for software engineer salary (~40k). With up to 50% tax rate gives incentive to have multiple jobs if your diet consists more than of plain yogurt and bread.

iExploder··on Ask HN: How do you deal with remote people working multiple full-time jobs?
why? the answer is simple ... control

you need to hit them with low salaries and high taxes, when they try for a better life quickly squash that crap with overly broad non-competes

welcome to Europe

how about paying employees adequately to a point where they don't have to work multiple full time jobs at a time, such an outlandish idea

iExploder··on Ask HN: Is software engineering heading towards obsoletion?
there is a grey area between reuse and abuse
iExploder··on Ask HN: Is software engineering heading towards obsoletion?
BS jobs must be automated or deprecated. you may find a short term security in being a doorman for someone but for both of our sake I hope soon we will be freed from such toil.
iExploder··on Ask HN: Is software engineering heading towards obsoletion?
coming from embedded my biggest complaint is _some_ companies gluing together or building on top of open source and monetizing it. instead of building their solutions in house from scratch.
iExploder··on Ask HN: Is software engineering heading towards obsoletion?
it may grow, however isnt it because of lot of BS work like maintain our webpage or ancient billing SW, glue stuff together for our "startup"?
