I used to solve hardcore problems, now I just talk to Claude and try to dodge layoffs left and right.

iExploder··on Ask HN: Is software engineering heading towards obsoletion?
well, it is evolving... a dying art - for sure, the "golden" days are long over, however that does not mean its not a viable job anymore..
iExploder··on Ask HN: How to reset expectations with a lower paying job
I was talking about Europe in general here.

And ... I would argue that living, working and thriving in London as software engineer with a salary north of 75k GBP is, in fact, a peak of one's career, hence my argument still stands..

iExploder··on Ask HN: How to reset expectations with a lower paying job
its a peak career moment in europe where tax rate is as high as 50% and commodities are more expensive than in the US due to VAT among other things...

its an unheard of salary in rest of the world

yeah, first world issues confirmed! :)

iExploder··on Ask HN: What's the Deal with HN and Rust?
inexperienced novices and disheartened veterans alike get infatuated with that new shiny thing ...

the rest of just smirk at the pump articles, as we have achieved state of Zen and realize _all_code_is_garbage_ and that nobody, other than minuscule amount of people who ever had a git write access in their life, actually care or will ever care about code let alone a programing language the app was written in

iExploder··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
in case of fixed interest rates I guess so... yachts for everyone!
iExploder··on HN call for help: Thousand of IT specialists flee Russia as job market collapses
I was talking in context of russia. of course protests happen everywhere sometimes they have a result sometimes not. but look at russia's history and how they deal with people who try to stir things up..
iExploder··on Tell HN: Google removes Russian news from results
and in another news... russia removes european news, because thats propaganda

you see, propaganda is only good when its OUR propaganda, and freedom of speech is only freedom when what you are speaking aligns with our values...

you can have a discussion about anything as long as both sides fundamentally agree with the mainstream narrative

iExploder··on Ask HN: What’s the real reason employers are ordering us to return to office?
When you are big bad wolf owning a holding company sucking out cash from your other risk facing companies by renting them office space, material and vehicles, you will understand why u need peons in the office.
iExploder··on HN call for help: Thousand of IT specialists flee Russia as job market collapses
not sure this is realistic

million people get together? you need some kind of leadership. this mean u have someone u can aim your snipers at / throw KGB at to disappear into a gulag and never be seen again...

russia is not exactly usa where you are free to buy assault rifles in grocery store, or where you can buy even a small gun for that matter... its not like bunch of guys decide to storm Kremlin over the weekend and magically overthrow the gov

I mean it happened in russia in the past, but it was literally at a cost of several millions dead, not sure if this is the right solution

iExploder··on HN call for help: Thousand of IT specialists flee Russia as job market collapses
"bro" we put sanctions on the gov not to hurt your everyday Ivan. Its not like they live in a democracy and russians can just do anything about their dictator gov.
iExploder··on Ask HN: How should one prepare for nuclear war nowadays?
well I'm not exactly an expert on surviving mass extinction events, I gave it a bit of thought, given sufficient amount of funds I think it goes as following:

1. move to New Zealand 2. find a nice plot of arable land, 3. build a radiation proof bunker, does not need to be nuke impact safe as I dont expect NZ to be a designated target for direct strike, but hey, if you have the money go nuts with the reinforced concrete 4. stockpile on canned food and seeds 5. probably need some kind of radiation level detection systems or poll some official sites as an early warning system

iExploder··on Where in EU would you relocate?
church tax only for those who declare they are part of religion, this is voluntary and you get some benefits, as additional holidays I believe. I always left the religion option empty and never had to pay church tax.
iExploder··on Ask HN: HN but for embedded hardware and software
not to my knowledge, but this newsletter is source of some nice info from embedded world:

http://www.ganssle.com/tem-subunsub.html

iExploder··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
u are middle aged, biological imperative dictates you are suppose be raising children. seems you are financially positioned for a family, find out if that's something you'll like or not. imagine what kind of life you want to have at 50.

in general its "never too late for anything", but realistically, having a kid takes a lot of effort both mentally and physically.

iExploder··on Ask HN: Why is LinkedIn job search engine so AWFUL?
it leaves much to be desired on many fronts, perhaps a chance for some other player to step into this market?
iExploder··on Ask HN: Eating and coocking is so inneficient, better way?
perhaps in mega-cities and as far as the young generation is concerned, eating out multiple times a day is not uncommon
iExploder··on Ask HN: How common is a 4-day work week in our industry?
Popular in Austria, certain parts of Germany and Switzerland, based on what I have seen. Probably applies to whole of western Europe as well. The progressive tax rates we have here really discourage from working overtime.
iExploder··on Local man switches to Arch, tells no one
a person re-writes full featured and working library in rust. tells everyone.
iExploder··on Ask HN: How many jabs needed for Omicron?
I'm in no way an expert. however, its pretty much common knowledge that viruses mutate, given that it makes sense that vaccines need to be updated. i see two scenarios:

1. forever taking vaccines at periodic intervals, probably enforced by law, judge dredd style

2. this particular virus will become less severe once everyone had it + was vaccinated and overly aggressive mutations died out, vaccines will be recommended not enforced

iExploder··on Ask HN: Why does Linux Kernel use goto statements?
some of possible reasons to use goto:

1. escape nested loops easily

  for ()
    ...
    for()
      ...
      if (something)
         goto get_me_out
      ...

  get_me_out:
2. error handling; since c does it in somehow messy way, you can end up with multiple variations of:

  if (error)
    close
    return

  if (error)
    deallocate;
    close;
    return
where by using goto you can put those handlers as in a footnote of a function like

  if (error)
    goto error1

  if (error)
    goto error2

  error2:
    deallocate
  error1
    close
as it looks a bit neater

some languages like Zig for example have keyword defer, this to my understanding implements an alternative to this approach

iExploder··on Ask HN: Best Ergonomic Chair?
sitting is evil, its not uncommon to get moderately serious chronic injuries by the time coder reaches 35 years. hey, who said coders don't do "back breaking" work? :)

I started to cycle between standing, sitting and laying on a couch with a laptop. works well for me. WFH.

iExploder··on Ask HN: How to maximize net income in EU?
40 days maybe if you count in bank holidays, otherwise its not that high really
iExploder··on Ask HN: How to maximize net income in EU?
this works only for permanent employees, it goes out of the window if you are sole proprietor or managing director, in this case the residence matters a lot and you will be taxed additionally in country u reside in
iExploder··on Ask HN: How to maximize net income in EU?
I havent investigated deeper, but afaik in Austria you can invest tax free into stock packages managed and offered by certain banks, up to 10% of gross income, iirc return on this is very low and needs to be held for 4 years before sale.

its nowhere near whats possible in the UK... as I said before, accept the social solidarity or move to different country.

iExploder··on Ask HN: How to maximize net income in EU?
yes, however the effective overall tax (21% + 7%) on dividend and the social and health care deductions - 0%, is much smaller than similar scenario in austria
iExploder··on Ask HN: How to maximize net income in EU?
you really can't, if you want to live in western europe and don't want to do shady stuff, you have to accept the social solidarity system we live in here.

I'm not a lawyer or accountant, and I cant give business or legal advice and the following is "sarcasm" etc etc...

in theory, slovakia, dividend tax for residents is 7%, you don't have to pay social or health deductions when taking out dividends from the company you own. you can employ yourself in said company with base salary and pay minimal deductions from that, the rest you can take out as dividend. your home residence still matters, this means you would also have to live there for majority of the year. otherwise you would have to pay additional deductions and tax in country of your residence austria. this is still somehow considered legal and "perfectly ok" thing to do, i bet they will change that in couple of years due to pressure from the EU. you might be able to effectively pay only up to 20% of your gross this way + you get to business expense.

really, just move to switzerland, at least that's my plan a few years down the road.

iExploder··on Ask HN: What's your ideal city in a 100% remote world?
Singapore, but the hourly rate would have to be in truckloads of gold.
iExploder··on Ask HN: Senior Devs, what career have you moved on to avoid impeding doom?
Sounds interesting. TBH I haven't heard a developer advocate is a separate role these days, I guess I had my head stuck in code too much.
iExploder··on Ask HN: Senior Devs, what career have you moved on to avoid impeding doom?
I'm kind of in eastern Europe, however, working for public sector is not a bad back up plan when near to retirement. Thanks!
iExploder··on Ask HN: Senior Devs, what career have you moved on to avoid impeding doom?
Good point on job offers being biased.

Up till today I was lucky on companies I worked for or with. It's just that every time I open up the job boards these days, I pray my contract gets renewed.
