Market drivers demand and supply. Perhaps when the first hard core gamer generation is well and truly in retirement age we will see uptick in more games targeted for that audience...
just for context I'm located in EU and I consider faang type jobs and compensations something that happens in a minuscule of cases in land far far away. if you look at salaries in "ordinary sw jobs" they may not have been higher in the past, but when adjusted for cost of living (and housing) and inflation, they definitely haven't been keeping up with the times
also in the past when engineers were considered "magicians" it was not uncommon to have royalties for authoring, license agreements in place for very simple low hanging fruit type of applications. this is completely opposed to current power dynamics where employers got the hint and redrafted the employment contracts to make sure most engineers are replaceable cogs in a cost centers dishing out lines of text. I'm not complaining, just giving examples about the decrease in the prestige and benefits in the job itself...
its not really encouraging when the career you threw your life to may change from ground up into something you may not even enjoy and like (due to AI etc)
lets have at the popular horse analogy; sure people could have always retrained to be "taxi drivers" but what if some of them just enjoyed riding the damn horses and feeding their family at the same time? and did the 20 years of horse riding on the prehistoric CV really translate well when applying for the new fancy taxi driver positions?
I hope you find a chair somewhere soon, but tbh it feels like most of us will have to drastically rethink viability of our careers in coming years if not immediately. It comes for us all, its just a question of time...
switzerland - 100K+ possible as full time employee, germany - possible as a contractor
if you are US citizen, whats stopping you from creating llc in the US and look for remote contracts.
keep in mind big tech pays huge salaries and the rest of the companies see software development departments as cost centers so the incentive to get rid of people is huge everywhere...
buying a land somewhere remote is not a bad idea if u can afford it anyway
with regards to AI I would think most of the developers should be in state of dismay, the clock is ticking, and I dont think many have realized this yet...
training set 1: "THEY TOOK OUR JOBS!" "THEY TOOK ER JERBS!" "TERK YER JERB!"
I think you nailed it.
imo what OP is worried about is a valid concert. future depends on how and where people can find motivation to push forward. and that depends on how society structures itself in a world where majority of human population is obsolete.
In any way I think overhype is playing a role here as well. There is a lot of money to be made here, so motivations are high, tends to make people polarize their opinions.
- start off by thinking you know everything better than anyone else
- kick off a rewrite, introduce a lot of bugs and unhanded corner cases that were previously covered by "ugly code"
- leave the work half done and get reassigned or better yet promoted because you "clearly" know what you are talking about
if thats the case everyone in the world will want a piece of this easy pie, this results in competition, that results in needing more talent to compete.
and when (or better yet if) we ever get to AGI, then it will be the end of humanity anyway. we will have far more pressing problems than looking for a job
just hoping my employer didnt watch the livestream
especially since there are people with questionable sources of income buying up property (speaking about EU) further propagating this issue...
