I used to solve hardcore problems, now I just talk to Claude and try to dodge layoffs left and right.

iExploder··on John Carmack on Functional Programming in C++ (2018)
this is why I think tests are so vital.

good luck trying to fix a bug in a complex project without doing some sort of test to make sure the change does not break one of the thousands of requirements implements so far.

from my experience fixing a bug without validating the system has a very high chance to spawn multiple bugs found later on...

iExploder··on An AI porn industry is emerging through Stable Diffusion
moderation was never as important as it will be in the new "AI age" of generated content

There should be a mechanism to make sure people dont dive into a rabbit hole and get stuck on whatever type of generated content they want to consume (whether that is porn, conspiration theories, or opinionated content)

iExploder··on Ask HN: Did the Fukushima cloud cause cancer?
arguable, but being married with kids has more detrimental effects than watching nuclear bombs go off in the dessert
iExploder··on Ask HN: If you were not laid off, how are your 1:1 meetings going?
completely untrue, humans are naturally objective and the hardest, most capable and morally just people always rise to the top to make the best of the decisions for rest of us
iExploder··on Ask HN: Whatever Happened To Freelancing?
you just pwned yourself Sir: AI was programmed and trained by a lot of people

iExploder··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
I'm not an expert on this but a quick check online and I found tax brackets for California:

$35,000-$80,000 [25%] $80,000-$170,000 [28%]

I'm just going to let you know that in Europe (Austria) personal income of 32,076 to 62,080 is taxed at 42% rate above 60k is taxed with 50%. And this does not include social and health insurance that is mandatory...

To give you TLDR of the European experience, you look at the gross salary, multiply by 0.45 and this is the real money you would see landing in your account, .. enjoy .. :)

iExploder··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
whether the gained wealth from exploitation of people outside of USA allowed more mobility between wealth classes inside of USA - that would be a complicated discussion for me

I was merely pointing out the fact that it was possible to ascent to higher wealth class in USA with regular 'honest work' some years ago, whereas in Europe this is in general impossible due to taxation schemes designed to suck the life out of anyone who decides to work as opposed to being born an 'aristocrat' inheriting money, land etc...

iExploder··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
used to be like that 20 years ago, maybe still doable in todays economy but the bar is much much higher and there are some new risks involved
iExploder··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
Oh UK recruiters, for the most part cowboys with attention span of coked up butterfly. Hats of to the few real ones...
iExploder··on Ask HN: Laid off folks, are you getting hired?
Exactly on point, Europe is feudal and always have been. It is actually the reason why USA was "invented", when people who were fed up with the system left to start anew.

I studied, lived and worked in high demand field all my adult life in Europe, am in my mid 30s and have nothing really to show for it. Salaries are lower than USA, the taxes are ridiculous, (progressive up to 50%), reasonably new house prices in reasonable locations are in millions. And health care... lol.. ok - it just about works, but as you can imagine anything public is prone to corruption and lowest passable quality

Seeing USA, the last bastion for people who could make something out of themselves by real work crumbling and crawling to its death is disheartening.

iExploder··on Ask HN: 1M layoffs soon, should gov intervene?
based on https://layoffs.fyi/ seems like 1M is rly a bit too much
iExploder··on Ask HN: Are you tired of reading ChatGPT headlines?
ChatGPT is like google/stackoverflow/wikipedia on steroids and it will get only better over time. there might also be specialized models for particular jobs, this will save people time on a lot of routine work and allow individuals to create apps that would take groups of people to make in past...

personally, I like it and see it as a big win for reality where tech at least from my perspective of an average joe seemed to stagnate for years..

iExploder··on Ask HN: Will you be paying for ChatGPT+?
probably not for the current version, but I think the next gen version or version trained for programming will finally break me (or my wallet)
iExploder··on Ask HN: What's your approach to raising kids?
every parent has a plan until their child has a nuclear melt down demanding chocolate and cake at 3 am in the morning
iExploder··on Ask HN: What are we even chasing?
you have described only the biological component of existence, but being alive is more complicated than that
iExploder··on Ask HN: Is 8gb RAM enough for a Linux dev laptop?
I would advise against 8GB, its really low even for lightweight work. You mention "dev' work: Imagine you have:

- few browser tabs

- IDE

- compilation

- maybe virtual machine or application under test running

its very easy to run out of RAM in this scenario, just parsing the source code and providing code completion can hang a pc these days. you can swap to disc but you will be hurting

if you buying 8GB is only option make sure the laptop has free RAM slot(s) so you can upgrade later

more tips:

- forget about GUI, look up i3

- if you can, install arch, or some other distro that lets you manually pick packages, if you go for ubuntu, be prepared to be disabling a lot of services after first install (not a huge pain, you can google how to do it)

iExploder··on Ask HN: How are big-company layoffs planned and executed?
yes m'lords please enlighten us; GoT is too fresh to re-watch, hopefully this thread will have enough cloak and daggers trivia to keep me warm till next series come
iExploder··on Ask HN: What will HN look like after the apocalypse?
Show HN: I rewrote my gatling gun turret code in Rust and got eaten by zombies while I was waiting for it to compile
iExploder··on Barracuda VPN on Linux permanently and silently changes resolv.conf
it could be just a case of incompetence.

seems to me like you still have open ticket with them and some email exchange, so its not like they have sent a hitman to silence you...

iExploder··on What should I do Before I give up programming?
did you try to get an internship or entry level job? you have a degree and appropriate entry level training, you dont need to do any more projects or tutorials

the actual experience will come from working on specific small tasks assigned to you + you should receive further guidance and training from senior colleagues

getting your foot into the door is not easy, but right now you should be slinging your CV left and right

iExploder··on Ask HN: Learn C in 2023?
maybe try some embedded development, like raspberry, light up some leds. Embedded development is fun, educational and one of the last bastions of programming where C makes sense.
iExploder··on Ask HN: Learn C in 2023?
chatgpt detected ;)
iExploder··on Ask HN: How is your company training you to become a better developer/engineer?
answer is they shouldnt,

the less effort exerted globally by the workers the less expectations will be placed on them by managers. God forbid people find their meaning outside of drudgery on their lords fief.

iExploder··on Ask HN: Where are the simple Git GUIs?
gitk, git_gui, but i used them on linux, not sure how well they would run on other platforms
iExploder··on Ask HN: What made you finally grok Git?
git is fine, one just needs to learn how to use it properly.

one has yet to witness the abomination that is svn, sourcesafe, or "software working on my machine" delivered by a zip file in order repent and mend ones ways

iExploder··on Tell HN: As a dev, Slack has ruined my life
1. turn off notifications 2. global channels / group channels = mute, look at max one time per week 3. react only to personal messages and internal team channel (1 max 2)
iExploder··on Ask HN: How I get a job that uses C?
Linux Kernel and its drivers, but I would assume you would need to put up a lot of upfront unpaid labor before you are picked up by a company who wants to pay you
iExploder··on Ask HN: Recruiters, how bad is the hiring market for candidates?
as most of the companies in EU
iExploder··on Ask HN: Do you genuinely enjoy your developer job?
similar situation here. for me after a decade of professional coding the benefits - mental stimulation of discovering and learning something new, start to get outweighed by the negatives - fatigue from repetitive work and hamster wheel economics
