ideasphere··on The Real Kevin Bacon
I had never actually realised that until now! Thank you
ideasphere··on The Real Kevin Bacon
This is great but surely the point of choosing Kevin Bacon in the first place was because he is surprisingly well-connected. If someone said ‘6 degrees of Samuel L Jackson’ most of us would not be surprised at how well-connected he is.
ideasphere··on Hedra is a 3D open world game I wrote from scratch while in highschool
I used autocomplete but i thought that was cheating so i handwrote all my programs on napkins, scanned them in and used tesseract to digitise it, but that felt like cheating so I manually traced my scans in mspaint and then wrote my own ocr to convert them, but that felt like cheating so…

ideasphere··on I hired an illustrator to draw my house. Now it's my Home Assistant dashboard
This is the illustrator: https://linktr.ee/owenyeconiel

It’s cool they hired an actual person but if I was so happy with their work to write-up a whole article about it, I’d be crediting them in a much more prominent way!

ideasphere··on Geek Fighter – 2d fighter game
I think you forgot to generate the gameplay. The opponent just walks up and never hit me.
ideasphere··on New Zealand lost its music media, and what we're building to replace it
There’s a guy in Wellington making a photocopied weekly gig guide which will do more for the local music scene than this attempt at making a profitable social media. I guarantee it.

ideasphere··on Cyberdecks, going analog, and convivial technology
Cyberdecks are nice for photos and build blog posts, but does anyone actually regularly use them?

Please excuse the translated link but only in Swedish as far as I could find.

2026 will certainly be the year of the 'I'm switching to Linux' thinkpieces

ideasphere··on When you deleted /lib on Linux while still connected via SSH (2022)
“This is not a very important machine, and I could have just reimaged the MicroSD card and be done with it, but I was curious if I could recover from the error.”
ideasphere··on Lessons I learned working at an art gallery
How many deep insights can you really gain on an entire industry by working in it for 2 years? And starting off in a separate industry which just happens to be located within the other?
ideasphere··on How to give a senior leader feedback without getting fired
I agree that bluntness is often mishandled, but the sort of language in this article just reads as wildly disingenuous. Obfuscating your actual point (and visceral, human feelings/opinions/experience!) to hopefully confuse your subject into compliance. Makes me think of that brain-dead article a few years back about how you should dodge offering support in close personal relationships. “I don’t have capacity,” “I’m not paid to perform emotional labour” etc. Sad! Promote humanity!
ideasphere··on Ben Affleck's surprisingly comprehensive take on LLMs for video
I don’t disagree with everything he’s saying but it’s odd seeing the responses this is getting when it sounds extremely rehearsed.
ideasphere··on Brian Kernighan Reflects on Unix: A History and a Memoir [video]
I think it’s fair to comment on the audio. Great interview but I found it really difficult to follow along due to the sound quality. To the host with the big Shure mic in the middle of their shot: point it at your mouth!
ideasphere··on Show HN: Hacker News frontpage as a print newspaper that you can personalize
It’s funny how frequently people try to reinvent the wheel re: how this site is laid out. It’s the best part about it!

ideasphere··on The short, happy reign of CD-ROM
I’m also the friend who brings up Cinemania once a month for no reason. Not literally the same one but I used to love it. Now, I just sit peering between ads at 2-3 lines of Fast Company articles while trying to work out how to close the autoplay video ad…

Would love to see this in the style of that “brutalist” hn from a few weeks ago so I can immediately immolate from acute second-hand embarrassment.
ideasphere··on Show HN: Brutalist Hacker News – A HN reader inspired by brutalist web design
Mostly nice but looks like their setup needs a tweak on what counts as ‘bullshit’:

“The Shortcut

$100 PlayStation gift card deal, Disney+ password crackdown, New Matrix movie, Budget AirPods, Samsung TVs [10h]”

(Hn saving you from all the emoji in that headline too…)

ideasphere··on Windows 98 Icons (2015)
‘Tree’ has always been my go-to. How about you?
ideasphere··on Parrots love playing tablet games. That's helping researchers understand them
I thought the exact opposite from a UX angle. Swiped down and it started scrolljacking and then I read the line about touch screens helping us “to snag Lightning deals on Prime Day” and it was enough for me to just stop reading and close the tab.
