iefbr14··on Microsoft Files Patent to Rewrite What Speakers Say in Live Video
This is real evil. They will start by replacing swear words and they will end with silencing any undesired speech.
iefbr14··on Sound of a guitar string cooling down on a piezo contact mic [video]
I noticed the same effect in a self made acoustic rainsensor that effectively was a jar with an iron metal lid that had a piezo element stuck to it on the underside (and an esp8266). Every time the temperature dropped fast the lid would produce this clicking sound, unfortunately generating rain in my graphs. Nowadays I use a plastic lid :)
iefbr14··on Dziga Vertov – Man with a Movie Camera (With Cinematic Orchestra) (1929) [video]
Impressive movie, well fitting music (not from 1929). Looks a lot like Koyaanisqatsi but more than 50 years earlier.
iefbr14··on Social media bans are not the answer to protect young people's mental health
It only helps when the parents dump social media too. The young kids need good social interaction with their parent when growing up. Having a mom and dad staring at their phones is not a good situation.
iefbr14··on Ask HN: How do you debug production bugs when you can't access customer data?
25 years ago I worked in a troubleshoot team for some time. The team members all had read authorization for all production files and databases. We did a first analysis of the problem and then send it on to the responsible maintainer without the production data. I had to sign a special NDA to be a member of that team.
iefbr14··on Chinese imports plunge 30% to 40% after EU tax on small parcels
And what will the the EU do when China raises chip prices for Europe by 40% as retaliation?
iefbr14··on the 404 test
Yeah, that may work... until AI reads your blog. btw, on my site I have a fail2ban jail for 404's :)
iefbr14··on Wave overhangs let you print without supports [video]
AI slop. They did't even check whether everything was pronounced correctly before publishing.
iefbr14··on Honey Gets Terminated as Lawsuits Proceed [video]
Good they get terminated. But offtopic, man, you've got a huge microphone, there is no need to shout
iefbr14··on Improving mouse traps with Home Assistant
I use a bird feeder with peanut butter for birds. Nothing falls to the ground below and it is relatively mouse safe if you hang it from a string. And the birds love it.
iefbr14··on I used a loophole in British law to fly a plane with no licence [video]
Not more than 2 seconds he did. The other guy (in somewhat better physical shape) made a good stretch though :)
iefbr14··on Farmers spreading crushed glass on their crops
I find it a bit strange that they regard glass as a waste product which it is not. Furthermore, if the working component is silicon then you can just as well use sand instead of glass.
iefbr14··on Hunter-gatherers introduced fish to a mountain lake 7000 years ago
Fish eggs often travel long distances by sticking to the feathers or legs of waterfowl I have been told at school long ago.
iefbr14··on Scanwheel is a drum style mechanical television you can build yourself
Unfortunately the video link points to https://example.com/docs
iefbr14··on Stolen Buttons
It reminds me a bit of the toolbar mania in the nineties :)
iefbr14··on Long Wave radio era set to end with switch-off
It is still on air, playing a message that they stopped broadcasting on that freq. (at least 30 minutes ago)
iefbr14··on The Commodore flip phone is how much?
Looks very much like the Samsung I still have. The best mobile phone I ever had.
iefbr14··on Ask HN: How do you find deep technical content?
There is probably still a lot out there but with the current state of the ('free') search engines you won't find much. I am painfully reminded of that every time I have to look for a datasheet that is not in my own archive yet.
iefbr14··on Europe is making a fatal mistake with China – Yanis and Wolfgang [video]
Stopped watching within 10 seconds thanks to the flickering screen border.
iefbr14··on How and Why I Journal
Same way I got here
iefbr14··on Researchers turn ocean dead zones into talking skies for pilots
They use it in the drones they build for Ukrain. Typical european..
iefbr14··on Researchers turn ocean dead zones into talking skies for pilots
Wouldn't it be easier to use Starlink or am I missing something?
iefbr14··on Ask HN: Favourite Assembly Instructions?
BR 14 (IBM assembler)

Because it has a utility named after it. Hence my name.

iefbr14··on Last love: a romance in a care home (2023)
The title immediately made me think of the September Song.

iefbr14··on Microsoft account bugs locked me out of Notepad – Are thin clients ruining PCs?
FWIW, when I used windows (up to 7), I always used Notetab.
iefbr14··on Why I'll Never Drive a Modern Car Again [video]
I wish it was only cars, but unfortunately this decay in-the-name-of-progress is in everything nowadays.
iefbr14··on The Engineer who invented the Mars Rover Suspension in his garage [video]
Very good documentary about Donald Bickler made by his son.
iefbr14··on The Olivetti Company
Also about olivetti: Olivetti & the Italian Computer: What Could Have Been. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfMxcrN90PE
iefbr14··on The first new compass since 1936
In the demo there is a cut in the video where the needle abrubtly stops. The cut is visible because the lighting is slightly different.
iefbr14··on Could an electric blanket save you £4k this winter?
The damage from a frozen water line in your house can be a lot more than $4000.

We had them when I was still a kid in the sixties and I did not like it at all. Jumping in a warm bed is nice but leaving it on during the night makes you wake up all sweaty in the middle of the night. Even on the lowest setting.
