im2w1l··on Disappointed with Europe, Thousands of Iraqi Migrants Return Home
The situation in Sweden is becoming really bad. The police have decided to cover up crime at the refugee centers because it is so high. For some age groups in Sweden there are now 125 men per 100 women. Yes the immigration has been enough to tilt the ratio that much. Christian refugees have to flee from refugee centers because of the dangerous situation for them there.
im2w1l··on The Rent-Seeking Is Too Damn High
1. Elections.

2. Monopoly. There is no "but they are doing it so we have to, too" race to the bottom.

im2w1l··on Maybe: run a command, see what it does to your files without actually doing it
Suggestion: Add a way to distinguish between parameters sent to maybe and parameters sent to the program. You don't accept any parameters at the moment, but you may want to in the future, and when you start wanting to do that, you may not want to break any existing usages by changing behavior. For that reason I think it would be good to introduce disambiguation now.
im2w1l··on Why the Assholes Are Winning: Money Trumps All
Think about the press. How often do you see "joe schmoe did something stupid" vs "celebrity did something stupid"?

Now, if you are rich and powerful, but not enough so to be famous, then I could see your point.

im2w1l··on GitHub is undergoing a full-blown overhaul as execs and employees depart
Yes, it's clear that some parts of academia has people with really suspicious agendas.
im2w1l··on iPhones 'disabled' if Apple detects third-party repairs
They don't want you to be able to say stupid or dumb either
im2w1l··on The removal of road markings is to be celebrated. We are safer without them
"Those who prefer speed over safety deserve neither speed nor safety"
im2w1l··on Europe’s top court mulls legality of hyperlinks
People have earned a lot of money by nitpicking laws.
im2w1l··on Europe’s top court mulls legality of hyperlinks
Just because it doesn't have formal definitions doesn't mean it doesn't need them. As GP points out, the implication of the vagueness is that there will be a lot of legal uncertainty.
im2w1l··on Sorting the Slow Way: Perversely Awful Randomized Sorting Algorithms (2007) [pdf]
I think it may helpful to decompose the permutation into circles, and create an equation system of time left from different states.
im2w1l··on Sorting the Slow Way: Perversely Awful Randomized Sorting Algorithms (2007) [pdf]
Has anyone analyzed the MCMC version?

    while not sorted:
        swap(a[rand(n)], a[rand(n)])
im2w1l··on Socat: “the hard coded 1024 bit DH p parameter was not prime”
That is not know to be the case, only conjectured.
im2w1l··on “The evidence suggests I was completely wrong about UK tuition fees”
I'd pay 27k for a piece of paper that say people have to listen to my rants because I am edumacated.
im2w1l··on Why I'm Choosing C++
>a rogue thread randomly scanning your memory for things that look like addresses.

How does that avoid race conditions? What happens if I quickly move my pointer around? i.e. b=a;a=null;c=b;b=null;d=c... etc

im2w1l··on How convolutional neural networks see the world
I like this one http://0.media.collegehumor.cvcdn.com/70/36/483778211d5177e9...

It seems impossible a few seconds until the trick is revealed.

im2w1l··on If you go near the Super Bowl you will be surveilled hard
That no one should criticize or make fun of islam seems to be one thing, if you look at the targets they have gone after. I assume they also want The West not to interfere when they create a space for themselves by killing and/or displacing other peoples in the Middle East.
im2w1l··on If you go near the Super Bowl you will be surveilled hard
The point isn't to make the enemy protect itself though. It is to get the enemy to give into ones demands.
im2w1l··on No POST after rm -rf /
> some desktop motherboard allow to reinstall a corrupted firmware by putting a special named file on a usb key

This sounds fun and dangerous.

im2w1l··on Some Performance Experiments for Simple Data Structures (2011) [pdf]
I am not 100% sure I understand your description, but if you want standard drop-in-replacement for linked lists, you want the array deque. It can do fast insertion and deletion at both ends. The only operation it cannot do is O(1) deletion of any element, even in the middle, that you have an iterator to. But in my experience it is rare that you need that.
im2w1l··on Some Performance Experiments for Simple Data Structures (2011) [pdf]
Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater... Complexity analysis is very useful, even if it doesn't always give the full picture.
im2w1l··on Proposal to require clinical trials data to be shared for publication
Creating data can be expensive. Analyzing data is cheap. People who come up with a new theory get a lot more fame than people who publish raw data. The incentives are then to suck your data absolutely dry of theoretical insight before you publish it.

The solution would be to realign the incentives by giving more credit to the creators of the data.

im2w1l··on Early antibiotic use 'may predispose children to weight gain and asthma'
Not everything responds to antibiotics.

Viruses are an example of not responding to antibiotics.

Doctors sometimes prescribe antibiotics for things they wont work for.

Antibiotics can be very effective against some diseases.

im2w1l··on A Badass Way to Connect Programs Together
I looked it up, and it seems that while IP will reassemble packets, there is no 1-1 mapping between send calls and IP packets, when using TCP.

You are only guaranteed to get the bytes in the correct order but you have to find the boundaries between messages yourself.

im2w1l··on A Badass Way to Connect Programs Together
30 developers in a cheap country cost less than 2 million per year I think. I'm not 100% of their wages and taxes though
im2w1l··on A Badass Way to Connect Programs Together
Shouldn't you handle fragmentation? I don't think TCP guarantees that csock.recv() will give you all of the message.
im2w1l··on A Badass Way to Connect Programs Together
4950 instances times a few dozen bucks a month, is like 2 million a year, just saying.

im2w1l··on Too Good to Be True: How More Evidence Can Decrease Confidence
Or... now I am not that sure anymore. What if Person A believe in H0:97%, H1: 2%, H2: 1%, and Person B believe in H0:97%, H1: 1%, H2: 2%. They have quite similar beliefs, at least by some measures. But if H0 is ruled out, then suddenly their beliefs will be very different.
im2w1l··on Too Good to Be True: How More Evidence Can Decrease Confidence
I don't like wording "arrive at contradictory conclusions", because it implies the creation of differences in beliefs.

I'd rather frame it as "maintain contradictory preconceptions". And the cause of this I would say is a lack of information: Information capable of distinguishing between H1-H5

im2w1l··on Toronto man found not guilty in Twitter harassment trial
Is there a record of his and their tweets anywhere? (I would need both to see to what extent he stalked their hashtags). Or is everything still up?
