imp··on An implementation of Conway's Game of Life for Windows 3.1x and later
Man, that reminds me that as a kid I coded the game of life into Excel with a bunch of nested IF statements. It was a small field, but still a lot of fun
imp··on Celery in production: Three more years of fixing bugs
I have been using Celery a lot for several projects and haven't really run into any significant issues. I like it as part of my tech stack.

Sorry to hear others don't feel the same way. I find it easy to use and maintain.

imp··on Let your kids lose: Success inhibits preschoolers’ selective trust
I completely agree. They are taking a limited experiment and extrapolating to parenting in general.

Job Description

Our small development team is looking for our first QA engineer to take charge of documenting requirements, writing acceptance criteria, and validating tests. We follow an agile test-driven development process, and we need a motivated QA engineer to help ensure that quality is built into our product along every step of the way.

As a QA engineer at RVshare, you will be given a large amount of responsibility. You will be entrusted to get out ahead of bugs before they happen and ask thoughtful questions to ensure the product is well built. You will work with the product designer and developers to create an appropriate test plan and then execute that test plan. You will also triage bugs as they are reported by the support team and write steps to reproduce each issue.

Our technology stack is a combination of PHP and Ruby on Rails, and we’re moving toward becoming 100% built on Ruby on Rails. We use Github for repository hosting, Circle CI for continuous integration testing, and AWS for infrastructure.

imp··on AWS mistakes to avoid
FWIW, I'm a current Linode customer that will be migrating to AWS soon. I like Linode as a basic provider, but I really need the better features such as ASGs, AMIs, and RDS. That's worth the higher cost per hour for me.
imp··on Ask HN: What are you learning right now?
If you're reading books like that, might I also suggest Mindfulness in Plain English: http://www.amazon.com/Mindfulness-Plain-English-Anniversary-...

I found it incredibly useful.

imp··on Ask HN: Bootstrapped tech founders who blog, write, etc?
There are two podcasts that have guys on there that are bootstrappers:

* Boostrapped with Kids

* Startups for the rest of us

imp··on Ask HN: What do you use for mailing lists?
Mailchimp is great. Easy to use, tons of features, and they have a free plan to get started. I've never had to evaluate the other competitors.
imp··on Help HN: How do I stop my start-up from being bullied?
Actually, the law is somewhat about who is right. If he has a trademark for name that covers your space and you use the exact same name, then (IANAL) it sounds like he's correct. But you should spend some time and money to consult a lawyer. My guess is they would tell you that you don't have a case.

What kind of app is it? Desktop app, web app?

It's already pretty easy if you know the function you're looking for. Just go to Chrome and type:

  php.net/strcmp
I'm not sure if anything else could be easier.
imp··on Get ready for the YC interviews: make sure you know the partners
There's a Case Western graduate in there too.
imp··on Trying the Stand-Up Desk
I've got a Geek Desk and I love it. Worth every penny.
imp··on The only two ways to build a $100m business
I'm pretty sure that was Richard Branson.
imp··on Code For Twilio's Free Fantasy Football Draft Room App (Node.js + Redis)
Okay, makes sense. It looks like a cool technology demonstration. I've been exploring node and I've done a lot with fantasy football so I'll probably check this out further.

I guess by "features" I was expecting things like a list of fantasy football players, a draft timer, a way to display who was picked, etc.

imp··on Code For Twilio's Free Fantasy Football Draft Room App (Node.js + Redis)
I don't get it. Is it just a conference call? I wasn't going to give them permission to use my microphone or camera, so I couldn't tell if it did anything else.

imp··on Ask HN: Does listening to music keep you focused?
Well, part of the reason the swimmers are wearing headphones is that they got them free: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/branding/beats-by-dr...
imp··on Read this before you buy the new iPad
Thanks for the warning comment. I'm glad that I didn't have to give them another page view just to come to the same conclusion.
imp··on Request for Startup: Codecademy for Stocks
Most good index funds have fees much less than 1%. Vanguard offers them for about a 0.15% fee.
imp··on Show HN: We have updated our page based on your feedback, please check now
Thanks for the reply. That doesn't sound useful to me. Maybe I'm not your target demographic though.
imp··on Show HN: We have updated our page based on your feedback, please check now
I didn't see this the first time, so I'll just give my feedback on this one. I glanced at it for about 15 seconds, which is probably longer than most average users will browse it for.

What are the "recommendations" that you offer? If I tweet once a month, and don't use Facebook, what exactly are you going to offer me as a recommendation? Even if I used those services a lot, what are you recommending? Restaurants, movies, books, etc?

imp··on Making beautiful forms; Square and Recurly
Start your own business then. Design your forms however you want.
imp··on Khan Academy Competitor? Alison.com founder on the future of Online Ed
If anyone is interested in a less corporate, more fun version of Alison, I started Curious Reef a while back. It's a social learning website.

For an example of someone actually learning something, here's a post by someone who just finished the MIT 6.00 Intro to Comp Sci class on Curious Reef: http://curiousreef.com/class/mit-opencourseware-600-introduc...

imp··on Tell HN: Mechanical Turk bans asking people for website reviews.
I've used feedback too, but it's just a wrapper around Mechanical Turk. If there was a system-wide banning of website reviews on MT, it would take out feedbackarmy also.
imp··on Poll: Have you read SICP?
For anyone starting to go through SICP, there's a collaborative class on Curious Reef working on it: http://curiousreef.com/class/structure-and-interpretation-of...
imp··on Ask HN: How do you start your hobby web app?
Yeah, design can be tricky. I'm horrible when it comes to graphics, but I've learned basic stuff about UI design, whitespace, colors, etc. that I can put together a not-horrible-looking design. I outsource logo creation to crowdSPRING. You can also consider buying a premium HTML theme as well.
imp··on Ask HN: How do you start your hobby web app?
Dive right in. Write the bare minimum that you need to demonstrate the uniqueness of your project and then get feedback on it immediately. It's good to have some high-level ideas of what it could be, but don't waste time with formal documents.

Wireframes are pretty useful for making any web page, not just a hobby web app. My process is to sketch out wireframes, make the HTML and UI, then build the backend.

Also, I try to come up with at least three ways to implement a UI for a new app. That way you don't get emotionally tied to the first one just because you thought of it first. Usually, I find that my first one is crap, and the second one is good enough that I never can think of a third one that's better than the second.
