Strange article.
He was given citizenship by a conservative-leaning Prime Minister in the hopes that he would invest in the local tech scene, which he has. The $50 million he invested is not a lot by silicon valley standards but it is a fair amount for New Zealand, and it went to some of NZ's best startups (possible bias, I worked at one).
Perhaps the painter chose it for its beauty, or perhaps because it was both distinctive and psychedelic. No way to know. But the academics claiming that "the plant in this fresco has nothing whatever to do with mushrooms" are embarrassing.
In addition, work doesn't need to consume the majority of waking hours. If you have a high-paying job at a company with a nice culture you can spend ~4 hours a day or less working, with the rest of the time spent reading articles on the internet, browsing hacker news, occasionally replying to Slack messages etc.
Vegan modifications along the lines of 'substitute the meat in your burger for mushroom' seem depressing, like they're unengaged with the balance of flavours in the dish.
Software engineers tend to be less comfortable socially so I imagine other people share this perspective.
I learn by reading, but when cooking videos seem to work best.
Conventions which would help:
- add vertical padding between elements
- simplify illustrations or using icons
- use a consistent color palette
- use color sparingly
- at least one of black text and white background should be off-black or off-white respectively
- cookie request background should be a neutral color rather than yellow
- cookie request should be at the bottom of the screen rather than the top
- choose one hover event: animate the illustration or underline the text
- the footer should be at least 3 times the height
- replace "over the last year as of date" with "each year" then restore standard font weight
Fixing all of the above should take about an hour.
