ipiz0618··on Show HN: Linkwarden – An open source collaborative bookmark manager
This is great! I've always wanted something like this, and even tried launching my own app for this. My app failed to gain traction but happy to see the same idea succeed.
ipiz0618··on Build full “product skills” and you'll probably be fine
Who should they blame when things go wrong if customers and managers are building the system themselves? Or when they change their minds, who should they gaslight?
ipiz0618··on Just don’t
Reminds me of a colleague who, upon seeing every little issue of a massive program, complains the whole thing is "completely broken". And when people try to explain why the issue happens, he would interrupt and say "I don't care, just fix it right now". The intention is obvious - to show authority and frame everything as urgent.
ipiz0618··on First make the change easy, then make the easy change (2021)
...unless every time you try to make meaningful changes, people try to urge you to hack in stuff quickly so the code only gets messier to the point the maintainer gets a mental breakdown ;)
ipiz0618··on Ask HN: Ads triggered by WhatsApp “end to end encrypted” messages?
Recently I was booking a trip to Finland, so my booking app showed me suggested destinations to other nearby countries like Estonia. That's normal.

Then, my friend asked me where do I want to go the most if I am to go scuba diving. I answered "Phillipines". My friend then said "Maldives is also great". We never searched for anything, just casual conversation. A few minutes later I look at my booking app, guess what were the top suggestions - Maldives, followed by Phillipines. Must be coincidence.

ipiz0618··on YouTube disrupted in Pakistan as former PM Khan streams speech
Yet they somehow manage to publish a huge amount of propaganda. They don't simply block the entire platform. They allow a few actors to access it.
ipiz0618··on Magnasanti – The largest and most terrible city of SimCity
That's Hong Kong
ipiz0618··on A new way to predict when software jobs will become automated
"If you can play it slowly, you can play it quickly"
ipiz0618··on What I don’t like about working at a remote job
How's office work not feeling like the same every day? I think it's worse, cause you see the same people, same expressionless faces (mine included) every day, unless you go out occasionally with friends.

And it definitely doesn't feel like retirement...You still work every day, even more because people expect you to be around at any moment. This is bad but easily fixable with just ignoring messages at night. In office, if you're there people could just approach you even when you're leaving.

ipiz0618··on What I think about network states
Sounds like dystopia to me. At least now we could flee to another country from tyranny.
ipiz0618··on Predictably Bad Investments: Evidence from Venture Capitalists
I'd bet on the lucky person over the smart person every time if I have to choose
ipiz0618··on Ethereum Proof-of-Stake
When we have a system that could prevent transactions, you'd think the most common use case is to prevent criminals to transact dirty money. But the most common use case is most likely China freezing dissidents' assets and blocking all alternative ways for them to safely emigrate.
ipiz0618··on It's worse than you think
Reminds me of the brilliant Ricky Gervais quote:

"So if you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech. You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg."

ipiz0618··on The fall of Reddit: Why it’s quickly declining into chaos
I tried searching for "Hunter Biden" on Reddit after reading about him in the news before the election. Nothing returned. Not a single post about this person, like he didn't exist at all. After the election, results started to appear. I'm not even American, just someone who wanted to look at comments about the news. I don't think "both sides" is an accurate statement of what's happening.
ipiz0618··on OCaml 5.0 Alpha Release
F# is a fantastic language! However, its official documentation is a bit lacking (like the C# ones). Also having developed some reactive applications I'd say .NET core needs some improvements before people can have fun developing desktop or web apps with it
ipiz0618··on Building my first mechanical keyboard
I happen to have the Leopold tkl, cause when I tried to buy the 660 it was out of stock. Leopold keyboards are awesome!
ipiz0618··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
It's just a lot more freedom with standing desks? The wire is messy and dangerous if tripped over.
ipiz0618··on Netflix’s bad habits have caught up with it
>Ever played Settlers of Catan and find out another player had 9/10 victory points? Everyone does everything in their power to not trade with that player, send the robber, and limit their chances

This is why my group of friends stopped playing Catan after a while..

ipiz0618··on Building my first mechanical keyboard
Man I love the 65% layout.

It's a shame there aren't many stock choices with solid build out there with 65% keyboards. My first 65% is a low profile Keychron K3 (not really recommended because of QC issues + completely trash customer service, but it's light and impressive for people who haven't used a mechanical keyboard before). Second one, I couldn't find a wired keyboard without backlight and 65%, so I opted for a TKL Filco keyboard - highly recommended even they only have Cherry switches, which is not perfect, but good enough for getting addicted to the typing experience :)

ipiz0618··on Ask HN: What projects are you working on this weekend?
Cryptocurrency portfolio management and market data collection system for personal use, because most crypto exchanges don't provide reasonable PNL dashboards. Only using Binance for now though.
ipiz0618··on Ask HN: Where does your mind wander to?
Lots and lots of things but I'm having more and more trouble remembering them..
ipiz0618··on Ask HN: Any other self taught devs terrified of interviewing these days?
I never got asked this question, but I tend to show off my customised settings by not touching the mouse once in a live coding test ;)
ipiz0618··on Managing Python Versions with Pyenv
I switched from conda to poetry because everyone was praising it last year. Then I switched back because it's a pain to switch between OSes using poetry. I only use conda + pip install now, works well enough that I don't have to struggle every time I deploy in a new environment.
ipiz0618··on I’ve spent my Easter break customizing Neovim
Vim is great, and it's great to see the author spend time customising a tool that he spends most of his time using. But is vs code that bad at keyboard-only navigations? I spent much less time customising the settings and can do 99% of my tasks without reaching for a mouse. The remaining 1% are for some extensions like the Postgres explorer, which I could easily mitigate by switching to a terminal and run psql, but I don't feel like reaching for my mouse occasionally is a big waste of time
ipiz0618··on New links found between musical training and cognitive ability
You're absolutely right. I play music too and I understand how practice is a huge part of this. That's how I perceive intelligence - some people never stop learning and improving, which is what makes them smarter than others. Surely some were born more talented than the others, but they also spend more time practicing than the others.
ipiz0618··on New links found between musical training and cognitive ability
I always think musicians are some of the smartest people in the world. Being able to memorize hundreds of songs / pieces is impressive alone. Most of them are also capable of improvising and adding their own interpretations (e.g. in classical music) spontaneously. It's something that a lot of people including myself could never understand how to do well.
ipiz0618··on Ask HN: Heavy Metal Music for Programming?
Takasago Army is great both musically and lyrically. It is a fictional story with historical (World War II) background. You really have to dig into the translations of the lyrics to understand it though - they are in native Taiwanese dialect.
ipiz0618··on Ask HN: Am I an arrogant or am I surrounded by incompetent people?
A lot of people would freeride because someone else would do it. They aren't really incompetent. They just value something else more than school projects. The "sad" truth is that they'd probably do just as well, if not better than you, after graduation.

Chances are after you graduate, you'd regret spending too much effort on these projects and missing out other fun stuff in college, while the others offloaded their work to you so they could enjoy college life. Maybe you can think about what you want to achieve right now.

ipiz0618··on Ask HN: Heavy Metal Music for Programming?
Animals As Leaders is a pretty good choice. Their music is instrumental, and so complex (yet enjoyable and very heavy) that you won't even bother to analyze it :). For music with vocals, I find black metal good for focusing. Cthonic is one of my favorites!
ipiz0618··on Google’s AI-powered ‘inclusive warnings’ feature is very broken
When the same kind of people banned "master" branch for being offensive I was surprised. Not so much now if I think in their logic
