ipython··on Identity thieves bypassed Experian security to view credit reports
I strongly suspect this was more widely exploited than what's being let on. I have received hundreds of Medicare robocalls where the caller was suspiciously able to suss out a fake dossier - even though street addresses and names would be plausible, but the birthday and SSN were fake.

I would definitely investigate this further to see if this knowledge was in the hands of criminals/scammers who were selling access for $$ over the past few years.

ipython··on ChatGPT won’t replace search engines any time soon
Are you looking for the movie The Blues Brothers? (Not ChatGPT, I promise)
ipython··on Twilio’s toll fraud problem
Now if only I could sign one of those premium rate numbers to get robocalled …
ipython··on “My PGP key is compromised, and at least many of my bitcoins stolen”
Who would enforce this? The Bitcoin police?
ipython··on Get Running with Couch to 5K
I put on a peloton outdoor workout in my headphones for this reason. Also encourages me to pace myself.
ipython··on Show HN: LiveTyper, a simple typing speed tester
shrug it's what it showed me when I finished. I think it overestimated my speed near the end as it seemed to respond slower as I got further along in the text. Cool demo tho! I should show it to my kids, they'll have a kick out of it.
ipython··on Show HN: LiveTyper, a simple typing speed tester
Same, I just clocked 199 wpm and at times I actually had to wait for the screen to catch up before I could continue typing (Firefox on macOS)
ipython··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
Shaken/stir isn’t a panacea however: https://transnexus.com/blog/2022/shaken-statistics-november/
ipython··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
Problem is that it seems every online site now wants your cell phone number as a sort of captcha these days. And they’ll either explicitly prohibit you or shadow ban you if you use a voip number, making google voice unusable for this use case. So… I guess a burner phone for everyone? So frustrating.
ipython··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
iOS will show a small checkmark near the phone number on incoming calls in the recent call list. Which is great AFTER the fact. I have not seen a way to identify signed callers in the actual “ringing” screen.
ipython··on Americans duped into losing $10B by illegal Indian call centres in 2022: report
There’s also a very distinct “bloop” sound from their phone system, I assume it’s the sound of “connecting” you to their conference. Honestly, that is a 100% signal of a scam call that would be trivial to detect en masse in an automated system.
ipython··on Southwest cancels 5,400 flights in less than 48 hours
How does that post in any way refute the parents point? I agree with the parent that management will try like hell to blame this on the weather- heck they already are. Just check out their press releases.
ipython··on Massive Southwest Airlines disruption leaves customers stranded
Better yet use the in-app or website self service functions to rebook yourself without waiting to talk to anyone. It is truly a race to grab the remaining seats on the next few flights.
ipython··on Massive Southwest Airlines disruption leaves customers stranded
The inc article I linked to above has several examples of other days where SWA cancelled hundreds to a thousand flights at one time. But today has clearly dwarfed even the worst of the previous incidents.
ipython··on Massive Southwest Airlines disruption leaves customers stranded
Sorry I wasn’t clear- you’re correct. I didn’t intend to imply southwest is one of the legacy carriers. I edited my original post.
ipython··on Massive Southwest Airlines disruption leaves customers stranded
Found this interesting reading as to a possible reason why their flight system seems so much more fragile than the legacy carriers: https://www.inc.com/kelly-main/southwest-becomes-one-of-amer...
ipython··on The Way Things Work CD-ROM (1994)
I loved this book as a kid! I had no idea there was a companion cd!

By the way there is a slightly updated version “the way things work now”. My kids unfortunately don’t enjoy it the way I did.

ipython··on PelotonCal
I created a service to track my peloton rides over time. I used the fact that “friends” can see your rides using their undocumented api. So my app just requires you to “friend” a special user in peloton, then that user will “friend” you back automatically.

That way I can pull your stats without your peloton username and password. Kind of a poor man’s oauth flow. You can always revoke the “friendship” later.

ipython··on Commodore Christmas Demo (1982) [video]
I remember as a kid with these graphics, thinking that there would be no way a computer could ever replicate full motion video like on tv. Crazy to see how things worked out and how wrong I was.
ipython··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
Most of these calls come from illegitimate call centers running scams overseas now.
ipython··on Password generator doesn't generate new password in the same session
Don’t get me wrong I appreciate the hacks. But I can’t exactly walk my father in law through that process when he hardly understands what a password manager is and why it’s important in the first place. Plus this doesn’t help at all on mobile.
ipython··on Part 2: Investigating Logan Paul's biggest scam (Coffeezilla) [video]
Honestly, what the heck is the draw to these crypto projects?? A virtual egg that you have to buy with real money, then watch it "hatch"? Who seriously spends thousands of dollars on this stuff? I get entertainment, but good lord I can think of so many ways to blow thousands of dollars that will get you a lot more value for your money.
ipython··on Password generator doesn't generate new password in the same session
Omg you must have incredible luck when filling out sign in forms. There must be some sort of sadistic instinct on the types of people who design password forms. I’ve had passwords rejected for being too long (over 15 characters), including the “wrong” kind of special characters, having the same character repeated twice in a row, not having enough numbers, just to name ones I can remember off the top of my head. Oh the best ones don’t tell you the rules until after you’ve been rejected.

A special place in hell is reserved for those websites that consider themselves too cool for a password manager. They actively block auto fill or cut & paste in the password field. I don’t envy the 1password devs for having to put up and work around this stuff.

ipython··on Government should incentivize high performance home builders
I like the concept but agree with your point (2). Building codes are already strict and yet often the tract houses are still shoddily built.
ipython··on Twitter applies 7-day suspension to half a dozen journalists
What “privacy protections” are there on ads-b data?
ipython··on ChatGPT playing a not so simple game
However, just like chatgpt struggles with arithmetic, it also can’t figure out simple logic puzzles. I gave it some puzzles like the ones here: https://www.woojr.com/printable-logic-puzzles-for-kids/ and it has no idea how to solve for it.

It kind of makes sense if the model is purely generative, as if it has not seen the exact puzzle before, it can’t just “regurgitate” the answer. For example, I gave it the classic four gallons of water in a five gallon container puzzle from die hard. It solved it perfectly, probably because that exact puzzle was in its training set, but could not generalize it to other bucket sizes.

ipython··on ChatGPT playing a not so simple game
Sounds like cheating will be trivial in this game as you can just “correct” GPT’s idea of what is in your inventory ;)
ipython··on Best ecommerce UX practices from mcmaster.com
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned information density yet. I find the modern practice of adding so much spacing and making the font size gigantic extremely annoying. Sometimes you need detail- and it’s harder to put together a well designed information dense way of displaying that detail. Instead it seems everyone decides to just ignore that detail and make you click everywhere and scroll all day to find what you need.
ipython··on IDN is crazy
Since dns was first defined in November 1987, well before Unicode 1.0 was ratified (1991 at the earliest), what would be your suggestion to the original implementers?
ipython··on SBF Written Testimony Notes 12/12/2022
Yes, I believe committee members referred to it yesterday during the hearing and asked for (and received) unanimous consent for SBF's statement to be put in the record.
