isitdopamine··on macOS 15.0 supports Nested Virtualization on M3 chips
> The Left still holds majority

This is factually incorrect.

Summing the votes of all parties that could be considered left (Green, S&D and The Left) you get 224 seats, which is about 31% of the European Union Parliament.

isitdopamine··on Libmobi: C library for handling eBook formats
> C is a subset of C++

It is not, they diverged since decades now.

Still, even if this was the case, the programming styles are so different that there’s nothing to gain considering them as any more similar as any two other languages.

isitdopamine··on Libmobi: C library for handling eBook formats
> If this let you at least ingest basically any eBook format, I'd be super interested.

Ever tried Calibre?

isitdopamine··on Tell HN: If you use Verizon, opt out of “Custom Experience”
Words can’t describe how much I despise PR jargon!

“more relevant offers” now universally means “we’ll spy on you, so we can get more money from you!”

isitdopamine··on Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli bridged mind and matter (2017)
The tripartition of psyche is not naturalistic at all.
isitdopamine··on Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli bridged mind and matter (2017)
Then let me rephrase it this way: I don’t see how Jung is more antiscientific than any other psychological theory.
isitdopamine··on Carl Jung and Wolfgang Pauli bridged mind and matter (2017)
I never understood how Jung is more unscientific than Freud.

At least: I don’t see this choir of “but it’s antiscientific!!!” cries when Freud is discussed, but still there’s no evidence whatsoever for the tripartition of self which is at the very base of Freud’a theories.

The super-ego is no more scientific than synchronicities!

isitdopamine··on Vivaldi: Violating CoC on forum may close your email account
> Don’t use content likely to offend people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or political views.

Stating that I voted for Trump (I didn’t) is likely to offend many people.

The breadth and vagueness of these CoCs is astonishing!

The then-go-somewhere-else argument also does not apply, since de-facto monopolists are also starting to apply similarly silly CoCs…

isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
Well, I suppose the last sentence kind of betrays your bias.
isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
Still not a bias, but a consequence of a system of values.
isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
That’s not the point, you told me that you are not fine with a whole peninsula being owned by the same entity.

My question is: where do you draw the line?

Can someone own a 300 sq meters house? A castle? A golf course? A small island?

isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
Are you against private property all together?

If not, where do you draw the line? Is a private villa acceptable? A private golf course? A hill? A small island?

Can I decide who enters my 220 square meters apartment?

isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
For most religions this is a well established fact.

As for every spiritual/faith decision you are free to think otherwise, but calling it a bias seems very ungenerous.

isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
There are so many peninsulas owned by rich people, and they get to choose who can enter. I don’t see a big difference here… It’s private, get over it!
isitdopamine··on Mount Athos, the “Autonomous Monastic State” of Greece (2016)
There are many peninsulas owned by rich people. Of course they get to decide who can enter. Are you against that as well?

isitdopamine··on Mushroom leather and how it is made (2020)
> less durable product that's many times less harmful to produce.

A big citation needed here… I am not sure boots made from locally-sourced leather are less sustainable than boots made from synthetic fibers and petroleum derivates some place in South-East Asia.

isitdopamine··on Mushroom leather and how it is made (2020)
One of the things I love about leather is it’s extreme durability!

I’ve been wearing the same leather boots for 4 winters now, a leather jacket is steadily approaching the 10 years marks.

More generally: sustainability problems can be mitigated or solved by buying stuff that lasts, see for instance /r/BuyItForLife

Is mushroom leather as durable?

isitdopamine··on Ask HN: What charities are you donating to this year?
A small charity supporting Christians facing discrimination and persecution in the Middle East.
isitdopamine··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
Since they don't say what happened, I can only speculate.

The usual CoC violation: probably someone in the Core Team made a statement (outside the Rust community and not speaking officially) that does not align with the progressive political thinking.

You say that the larger number of men in tech with respect to women might be due to biological reasons? CoC violation, fire the enemy of the people!

You say you voted for Trump? CoC violation, fire the enemy of the people!

You say only biological women are actual women? CoC violation, fire the enemy of the people!

When there was a huge push to adopt CoCs I warned everyone I knew about the clear potential for abuse by the leftist (who also incidentally happen to be the ones to back CoCs). In particular a CoC should cover only actions performed in a community, no-one should be banned to contributing to a project because of what they write on Twitter, for instance!

isitdopamine··on Show HN: Mako – a full Bitcoin implementation in C
To be honest I don't care that much, I would find much more useful that you understood the rules of a community you are taking part of.
isitdopamine··on Show HN: Mako – a full Bitcoin implementation in C
You have the right to your opinion.

You do not have the right to express it here, since it goes against the rule of this website.

I suggest you read them very carefully!

isitdopamine··on Show HN: Mako – a full Bitcoin implementation in C
Hacker news values intellectual curiosity, so why dismissing something so interesting as a waste of time?

Moreover, the code is beautifully written, the project is useful and the rules of HN ask you not to dismiss project just the way you did.

isitdopamine··on PlayDate Fulfillment Delayed
You didn’t understand my comment.

Their write up seems to imply that the device wouldn’t charge if the battery is completely drained.

It happens sometimes in cheap devices in which the charging logic is managed in software, but it’s a terrible design decision.

If that’s the case, a better battery will mitigate the problem but the terrible design remains!

isitdopamine··on PlayDate Fulfillment Delayed
> we found a number of units with batteries so drained, Playdate wouldn’t power on at all — and couldn’t be charged

Wait, wait, wait… Are they saying that if the battery is too drained the device will not charge? It that’s the case, it’s a terrible design decision!

Also, isn’t the + shaped control a Nintendo patent?

isitdopamine··on “Illegal” Moscow state university network built by students (2002-2013)
Wonderful write up!

This part hit on me

> Getting on the roof was illegal, of course, and required a bit of climbing walls. But who cared? Delivering an internet connection to our friends and other students was much more important

It’s not the point of the linked post, but it made me think about the value of friendship.

Nearly everything in life is transactional, even romantic relationships can be quite transactional, but these people were risking their lives climbing walls just to see their friends have Internet. And of course also for the intellectual challenge of providing Internet to the building!

Probably friendship is the purest human feeling there is.
