jacooper··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
This will be possible if done by third parties anyway, it will just be apple, google and maybe meta, a single phone call is enough to cut you off. At least if the government is doing it, the app doesn't get your id.
jacooper··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
Yes at least they don't do BS like this.
jacooper··on Codeberg Bans Cryptocurrency Projects
The decision to stop hosting such projects on codeberg will change nothing, it will just make it clear that its not a serious competitor.

Its like how the EU kneecaps everything related to energy because of the climate while literally the best case scenarios for the EU lawa is to be 0.1 colder, because the EU isn't the bigger emitter. It just doesn't matter.

jacooper··on LEDs’ potential to save our night skies
I would 100% rather have a truly bright and lively city at night than a visible night sky. More than half the year is in the winter ffs!
jacooper··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
Two generations compared to another flagship like an s26 ultra or an oppo.
jacooper··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
The moment the phone is no longer the latest one, you start to notice it.

Dropped animations, slow downs in the summer due to heat, poor battery life because it has to use boost, and so on. You don't have to game to notice it.

jacooper··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
Nah the hardware is still crap. CPU performance that's genuinely like two generations behind being sold as a flagship somehow.
jacooper··on Volkswagen planning to cut up to 100.000 jobs globally
Again, Bohoo, shitty management can't find another solution somehow.
jacooper··on Volkswagen planning to cut up to 100.000 jobs globally
Bohoo, can't build weapons for genociders, poor me!

What a shitty management that can't find any solutions other than building weapons for war criminals.

jacooper··on Claude Sonnet 5
Just use deepswe as a reference point.
jacooper··on FUTO Swipe – A new swipe typing model
If only FUTO supported combined keyboard languages without duplicates. Why would there be two separate de and en layouts when multilingual typing is enabled.
jacooper··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
In my case the bottleneck isn't cpu performance, it's ram. You can't run serious apps with 16gigs, nor lightroom with a large catalog nor Photoshop with Ai filters. Also running multiple agents with dev servers is ram intensive.
jacooper··on Microsoft's "Fix" for Windows 11: Flowers After the Beating
Doesn't matter, the end result is the same.
jacooper··on Microsoft's "Fix" for Windows 11: Flowers After the Beating
Gimp is ass, what takes me 5 minutes in Photoshop needs an hour in GIMP. Also I edit photos occasionally in lightroom. I actually daily Linux, but I still have to dual boot for gaming and Adobe.

Also Linux isn't flawless either, Fedora broke sleep on my full AMD PC since like a month now and no agent could successfully debug it.

jacooper··on Microsoft's "fix" for Windows 11
Macs are too expensive for the same performance/ram, and Linux still can't run proper creative software.
jacooper··on Mouser: An open source alternative to Logi-Plus mouse software
Neither really worked for me on fedora. Ratbag can't see the mx master 3s and solar couldn't remap anything.
jacooper··on Keep Android Open
There's strong political backing for it now.
jacooper··on Show HN: mcpc – Universal command-line client for Model Context Protocol (MCP)
So this turns mcps into cli based clients?
jacooper··on Replit founder Amjad Masad isn’t afraid of Silicon Valley
Because i can do it on the phone.
jacooper··on How Google got its groove back and edged ahead of OpenAI
If only they could figure out how to fiz the hallucination issues in gemini models...
jacooper··on Creators of Tailwind laid off 75% of their engineering team
Actually synthetic training dats is better, thats why the new models are all better at design.
jacooper··on GrapheneOS is the only Android OS providing full security patches
Just wait for the new OEM to drop their phones with GrapheneOS support. Pixel hardware is garbage tier.
jacooper··on Head of Germany's Sovereign Tech Agency believes that Europe must invest in OSS
Ncie writing ai
jacooper··on Migrating the main Zig repository from GitHub to Codeberg
What? Jenkins? No way.
jacooper··on Why Nextcloud feels slow to use
Immich is way better if all you need is photo storage. It's Google photos level.
jacooper··on Canva’s affinity strategy: Normies over power users
It's almost always the case with the old-school gnu mindset, aka gimp. There are exceptions though, like blender and gnome.
jacooper··on Gaza Rafah border crossing to stay closed 'until further notice', says Israel
The only party actually following the ceasefire is the Palestinians as usual. There's a ceasefire in Syria and Lebanon, but apparently for Israel a ceasefire means they can still attack you, you just can't defend yourself.
jacooper··on Modern messaging: Running your own XMPP server
I'm sorry but there's no way you can call xmpp modern messaging. Matrix with all of its shortcomings looks like 2050 compared to xmpp. Xmpp doesn't even have any half-decent mobile client!
jacooper··on Jules, remote coding agent from Google Labs, announces API
If you have copilot already, just use the copilot coding agent it does the same and it's much better.

From my experience Jules is the worst coding agent on the market.

jacooper··on TikTok 'directs child accounts to pornographic content within a few clicks'
The conversation around tiktok is so politicized and biased to the point I just can't take such results seriously.

If this was Instagram nobody would care.

> Global Witness, a climate organisation whose remit includes investigating big tech’s impact on human rights, said it conducted two batches of tests, with one set before the implementation of child protection rules under the UK’s Online Safety Act (OSA) on 25 July and another after.

Also why the hell is a human rights / climate org doing research on tiktok?
