jamesbfb··on Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11
One of the few things you can’t fault MS for is backwards compatibility. My GP has an absolute archaic..err..ERP? (sorry, I have no idea how to refer to these apps) for managing patient records that seemingly “just works” on Windows 11. As a many-decade Linux user, hats off to MS.

Bless. You’re a good egg.

This would be right up my alley! Have you got a preferred store/link to purchase?

> Some people would say that you don't need this at all with the frontier LLMs

Hit the nail on the head. Development methodologies pivoting at the whim of frontier models have been one of the things that have been worrying me as of late.

jamesbfb··on A human postmortem of the 1996 AOL outage
You’ve unlocked a memory for me! I had that same experience when I heard a different series of squeals than normal only to realise the modem had negotiated something faster than 31.2!

jamesbfb··on VS Code inserting 'Co-Authored-by Copilot' into commits regardless of usage
I think there’s a few of us who appreciate you being up front. I’d question the intent and why it was a mistake, especially when the commit[0] message reverting said functionality states “widespread criticism” citing this very HN article makes it look seemingly like the revert is due to negative PR opposed to a mistake.

jamesbfb··on OpenAI backs Illinois bill that would limit when AI labs can be held liable
No different to preventing game studios being liable for mass shootings. Reminds me of the post-Columbine hysteria where media was super critical of Doom and Nine Inch Nails.
jamesbfb··on Show HN: Made a little Artemis II tracker
Bless! Absolutely love this, and an absolutely no disrespect, this is vibe code goodness! These are the kinds of things I have an absolute ball building, usually when I’m sitting on the couch at the end of the day duel screening.

What’s the data source? Assuming NASA being NASA they have a public API for the mission?

jamesbfb··on The Australian government has announced gambling advertising reforms
I think we must be of a similar generation, I also remember being a kid seeing those stupid ads with celebrities “bending their finger”. It’s really gross to think how normalised gambling is.

There is another side to this though, and that’s our pub culture and how “big gambling” plays a role in keeping pubs financially viable with the help of pokies. In the wise words of Tim Whitlam, “Blow up the pokies”

Rusty, of SomaFM fame? What a blessing to see you here! Mega fan, proud SomaFM mug owner from Australia :)
jamesbfb··on Django: what’s new in 6.0
I’m very much an Odoo guy who has dabbled with Django (and notably, celery in the past) but as someone who makes huge use of the Odoo OCA queue module[0], I never understood why Django never made use of the Postgres LISTEN/NOTIFY to offload tasks. Maybe this is my misunderstanding as I’m pretty green with the Django ecosystem as a whole.

jamesbfb··on McDonald's pulls AI Christmas ad after backlash
It almost seems intentionally AI? If anything, if my job at Maccas…ahem, McDonald's (sorry, spot the Aussie) is in marketing, I’d expect to to be promptly fired if this wasn’t expected to pass for anything less than satire.
jamesbfb··on From Rockets to Heat Pumps
I’m always fascinated by how heat pumps (or reverse cycle units for Australians) are not the defacto standard in other countries and somehow come up for debate in the US. I remember watching one of the many TechnologyConnections videos on the subject and was wondering although interesting, what is with this focus on heat pumps being better than XYZ? Is the resistance to change really that great?

Being Australian, at least in Victoria, I don’t know of many houses that have gas heating. I also think it’s been a hot minute since I’ve seen household evap cooling, which I find has slowly been replaced by reverse cycle units given the climate has changed for us in VIC that the humidity increase over the years tends to make the evap units far less effective.

jamesbfb··on EQ: A video about all forms of equalizers
POSY is an absolute treasure. The time and effort he puts into his videos is absolutely evident.
jamesbfb··on European airports race to fix check-in glitch after hacking disruption
Left Brussels 6 hours after attending Odoo Experience and it was organised chaos at the airport. Heavy reliance on passengers checking in online first and using those details to check passengers and luggage in “manually”. I applaud the Emirates staff as to how well they handled it.
jamesbfb··on Texas brothers buy abandoned Boeing 727 for $10k
Brilliant.
jamesbfb··on The ADHD body double: A unique tool for getting things done
In my 40s and I’ve recently been diagnosed with inattentive adhd. TFA makes a lot of sense to me given I’m one of the rare people at my company who commutes to the office every day even though we are an in-person optional workplace. Whenever I’ve had to WFH, I’ve struggled massively to gain an initial focus. Although medication has helped tremendously, I still feel much more productive in an office setting.

jamesbfb··on Show HN: OnAir – create link, receive calls
> Instantly speak to a sales rep

Soo, if you’re like me, booking a call is a necessity. Most days, half of my day is booked. How do you work around this?

That said, I do like the idea of a uniformed platform with a low barrier of entry when it comes to contacting me.

jamesbfb··on OpenZFS deduplication is good now and you shouldn't use it
Update. Turns out PyCharm does not play nice with a plethora of symlinks. :(
jamesbfb··on OpenZFS deduplication is good now and you shouldn't use it
Well, TIL. Being relatively new to nix, you’ve let me down another rabbit hole :)
jamesbfb··on OpenZFS deduplication is good now and you shouldn't use it
Can relate. I’ve recently taken ownership of a new work laptop with Ubuntu (with “experimental” zfs) and using dedupe on my nix store has been an absolute blessing!
jamesbfb··on Busy Status Bar
I’ve blocked out 2 4 hour blocks for some work mandated sabbaticals for months now. It’s been great! People now remember the days and which block they can’t contact me, and work around it. It’s become such a successful thing that we recommend this to others within my team.
jamesbfb··on Video Surveillance with YOLO+llava
+1 for Frigate and Reolink. I have it running in a Proxmox VM on an old dell r710 (yes, it’s sucks watts and needs replacing) but all said, Frigate, is, amazing! The ease of integration with HA is equally great.
jamesbfb··on The Excel spreadsheet brought the network down
Thanks! After reading both reddit posts, I would love for someone to deep dive into how this was possible.
jamesbfb··on Serving AI from the Basement – 192GB of VRAM Setup
Huh, what?! Mega TIL moment for me as an Australian with an electric kettle and dryer plugged into whatever power socket I wish! Reminds me of this great Technology Connections video: https://youtu.be/jMmUoZh3Hq4?si=3vSMHmU2ClwNRtow
