jarsin··on US appeals court rules AI generated art cannot be copyrighted
The "but" is literally in response to what you quoted.

For example if I code an entire application in c by myself without ai then told ai to redo the whole thing in rust I would retain copyright.

If you just prompt the same application from scratch and accept by in large the outputs. No copyrighht. This is how the vast majority are using it to create new systems not using it as a tool to enhance majority human generated code or images or books etc.

The more it creates from pure prompts the lesser chance you have to claim copyright.

You left out the big "but". But if ai gets more optimized and automated our current conclusion will be more bolstered.
jarsin··on US appeals court rules AI generated art cannot be copyrighted
This is old news. The copyright office already ruled that AI generative outputs are not copyrightable in January [1].

I think many have not understood the implications of the CO ruling. This means anything you build with llms you don't own. Your company doesn't own. If your using copilot and you have a copyright notice at the top of your source file if that ever goes to court you will learn that copyright is not valid. You cant even put an open source license on the output, like the GPL, because...drumroll...you don't own the copyright.

The copyright office has already ruled recently that prompts are not enough to gain copyright no matter how detailed or how many iterations.

Furthermore, the Copyright Office stated that prompts alone do not provide sufficient human control, as AI models do not consistently follow instructions in the prompts and often "fill in the gaps" left by prompts and "generate multiple different outputs"

What's crazy is this was always seen as a left wing car. If you drove one of these into small blue collar towns there is a chance you would have been harassed a few short years ago.

jarsin··on Ask HN: Why are so many US States a closed primary state?
How many of those non party voters even care enough to vote in a primary. My guess is very few and if they did then they should switch their non to a party.

My experience with primaries is only the most dedicated vote in them. For example in Nevada you have to sit in rooms in schools and listen to every nut that wants to give a ten minute speech to change your vote.

jarsin··on Ask HN: Why are so many US States a closed primary state?
Why? It's mainly so people of that party are the ones choosing the candidates for that party. Without closed the other side purposely tries to sabotage the otherside by voting for the worst candidate.

Looks like they programmed the auto mod to look for trump + tesla in same article.

I vouched, but probably will get flagged again.

> I’ve found that almost no founders or friends I speak with have any vision for the future anymore.

I think in general there is a feeling that the time to get your bag is rapidly shrinking.

Once everything is built by these things there will be no reason to create anything as the platform owners (big tech) will be able to take everything for themselves and no longer have to share 70% with those pesky creators/small business/startups etc.

jarsin··on OpenAI and Google ask the government to let them train AI on content
Copyright office recently ruled that outputs are generally not copyrightable without significant human changes. Prompts are also not copyrightable. I'm actually surprised that is not discussed around these parts more because it essentially means any app etc built by AI has no copyright protection. Thus code from llms cannot be opensourced using opensource licenses. Business cannot stop users from stealing their apps etc.

It also means that if you build something with a popular llm then big tech now has your inputs and outputs, and you have no IP to stop them from stealing either.

The next ruling from the copyright office is around fair use that big tech is pushing for.

jarsin··on Coinbase phishing email tricks users with fake wallet migration
This email was sitting in my inbox. Luckily don't use Coinbase anymore, but they brought this on themselves and their users.

Leaking all of our emails then doing crap like making everyone migrate to their wallet etc.

They should be held liable for all hacks since the leaks.

Please let the bubble burst...

jarsin··on Beware tech career advice from old heads – Jacob Kaplan-Moss
I still remember the NetWare/PC guy coming to our house as a kid when I bricked one of my families early pc's. He said something like, "if you keep this up you will have my job some day."

We still didn't have the internet in our houses then, though.

jarsin··on Beware tech career advice from old heads – Jacob Kaplan-Moss
The modern day tech career required two things to exist. A PC in every persons home/pocket and a connection to the internet.

Both of those things came together in the mid/late 90's and gave birth the the modern day tech career. Since then the modern day tech career has changed very little if at all.

Anything before that was not even comparable. Mostly academic researchers and labs.

jarsin··on Beware tech career advice from old heads – Jacob Kaplan-Moss
> The tech industry of 15 or 20 years ago was, again, dramatically different from tech today. I used to joke that if you knew which was was up on a keyboard, you could get a job in tech.

Nope, guys that started 20 years ago came into very brutal tech job markets. Dotcom bust / 911 / with the cherry on top, the GFC a few years later. Very worth listening to.

jarsin··on Ask HN: How can junior devs/designers get a job with Indie studios?
I would go off the beaten path and consider a career in slot machine companies. Assuming they learned Unity in school most of those companies are using unity or something similar. Aristocrat and companies like that.

If you truly mean Indie, and not AA with investment money, the vast majority of them hire freelance via discord, if they even hire at all. The small companies lucky enough to raise money tend to have extensive network they call on, which is how they got any money in the first place.

jarsin··on Tell HN: US Government is surveilling HN
I sometimes wonder if there is a whole generation that has no idea who Snowden is. Or even if they know who he is they have no idea what secrets he released to the world.
jarsin··on Ask HN: Tech job searching, should I continue?
Your numbers don't seem hopeless even though it probably feels that way. Factor in a large number of your apps probably never even got reviewed by a human. Then your app to interview ratio is not bad when a human reviews it given the market.

There are a lot fewer manager roles and they are being cut by big tech left and right. I would start applying to majority dev roles and practice your tech interviews to get that number up.

jarsin··on Layoffs Don't Work
I don't think its only psychological safety. If the top performers lose staff that did the mundane crap and now they have to do it they start to really pay attention to what the management is actually doing.

Every layoff I have ever survived the staff inevitably ends up talking about how so and so manager and his favorite buddies are still out golfing every friday. Why the f are they still here etc.

This resentment builds and builds.
