jasiek··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026)
https://codeplug.org - use modern web platform features with historically stable, open-source drivers (CHIRP) to program channels into amateur radio equipment (a web-based CPS).
jasiek··on Ask HN: What are tools you have made for yourself since the advent of AI?
https://codeplug.org

A web harness for another open source project (CHIRP) which lets you program channels into all kinds of handheld radios (HAM).

jasiek··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2026)
https://codeplug.org

Program your amateur radio via the web. Uses pyiodide + chirp drivers under the hood + WebSerial.

I've used it to put together a browser app to program walkie-talkies: https://codeplug.org
jasiek··on Ask HN: What are you working on (August 2024)?
I'm putting together something to program Anytone AT878 DMR radios for amateur radio use using a web browser.

jasiek··on When you lose the ability to write, you also lose some of your ability to think
Use AI to write anything and you become confined to whatever "moral code" the model has been taught to follow. Once a critical mass is reached, whoever controls these models, will control what is being said.
jasiek··on Ask HN: If Kubernetes is the solution, why are there so many DevOps jobs?
The reason why they provide it, is because everyone expects it. The reason everyone expects it, is because it was "cool" and an ecosystem grew around it. I use AWS ECS and it's really really good and easy to understand.
jasiek··on Intel SGX Protects German Electronic Patient Records
Sounds like something massively over-engineered and sold to the government by a consultancy. Intel loves this because it puts the client's data in a cage which is locked from the inside, and they must keep buying servers with Intel chips no matter what.

jasiek··on Could a four-day working week become the norm?
The original paper describes that the reduction in working hours has forced the workforce to develop a more efficient way of working. Thus, they have accomplished what should have been accomplished with having better management from the get go.

Given this is the government we're talking about - it isn't really that surprising, is it? They could have reduced the workforce by 20% and accomplished a similar result, while reducing costs.

jasiek··on Missing Covid-19 test data was caused by the ill-thought-out use of Excel
Unfortunately the procurement rules currently in place prevent procurement personnel evaluating a tender from taking into account any prior performance. I'm unsure whether this is a result of EU legislation and common market rules, or whether it is just the UK.
jasiek··on Prusa MINI: Smart and compact 3D printer

jasiek··on UK's Open Banking to Launch on 13 January
You should check out teller.io - they let you have "an API to your bank account"
jasiek··on We Need to Nationalise Google, Facebook and Amazon
The Guardian uses clickbait just like any other site. Those ads aren't going to display themselves.
jasiek··on We Need to Nationalise Google, Facebook and Amazon
So currently, you have a choice not to use google/fb/amazon. If they were to be nationalized (a truly silly idea), you may lose that choice.

Of course not.
jasiek··on Teller – API for your bank account
This has already happened and no one batted an eyelash. Why?Because, Orange is French and T-Mobile is German.
jasiek··on Teller – API for your bank account
Nope. They just need to provide "an API". Got a hundred banks? That's potentially 100 integrations you'll need to do - the barriers remain in place an everyone is happy.
jasiek··on Teller – API for your bank account
http://ec.europa.eu/transparency/regdoc/rep/10102/2016/EN/SW... - see page 32 (ARRPU). Operators in different countries have different profits per user (obvious). If you have someone like T-Mobile or Orange, they'll use the proceeds from say... France, to finance their operations in say... Poland. This will put pressure on other national operators to further lower prices. Lower prices mean lower profit margins, mean lower dividends, lower company valuation, being less attractive to investors, etc. After a while their value will decline by so much, they'll be willing to sell themselves at the current going price of their infrastructure. Orange buys them, and kills off competition.
jasiek··on Teller – API for your bank account
So does Europe. Open Banking Ltd in the UK is attempting to develop these standards, but they are working with tens of stakeholders across impossible deadlines - which means they cut scope and quality. And since banks in the UK are sponsoring the show, it is beyond certain that no disruptive moves will be taken, and interests of the incumbents will remain preserved.
jasiek··on Teller – API for your bank account
Current roaming regulations in the EU are designed with the biggest, transnational players in mind. By subsidizing operations in a less lucrative market using proceeds from other countries, they can bleed smaller national telecoms. They will then proceed to buy them for pennies on the dollar. This will result in less competition down the road, and higher prices for the end user.
