jasmes··on Cloudflare Down Again – and DownDetector Is Also Down
Time to rewrite Rust’s unwrap() in Rust obviously.
jasmes··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
Blogs aren’t yelling to the world. They’re just a place you put your thoughts for other people to read or not read. Think of it like open source internal monologue.

If youre too young to have context for blogging then it’s not your fault. The intent of “blogs” is generally indeed advertising now a days.

jasmes··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
AESPA
jasmes··on Is Zig's new writer unsafe?
Chill out kiddos.
jasmes··on Vibe Coding: Where Everyone Can 'Speak' Computer Programming
No.
jasmes··on Show HN: Investment and Retirement planner using Monte-Carlo Simulations
This’ll sound harsh: Your landing page doesn’t do a great job of telling me why I want to use your tool. How is the simulation done? Do you mean you account for common historic market trends or just added some hysteresis? Is it just a pretty coat of paint on an interest rate tracker?

Is this open source? If I can’t audit the code, and it isn’t from my bank, a program is not getting my financial information.

Put privacy front and center on the homepage. Put why it’s better than google sheets or excel.

jasmes··on Show HN: I built a website that explains any difficult concept in seconds
I think they're mostly just hype junkies and a few true believers. They're a lot like the crypto people. "Sure it doesn't really actually entirely work for what we want it to but SOMEDAY!"
jasmes··on Show HN: I built a website that explains any difficult concept in seconds
If it was an accounting firm doing an audit and sending you lies, then yeah you could hold them responsible. If an OTC drug had incorrect labeling and misinformed you, you'd be able to hold them responsible.

If you ask an AI a question and it replies with incorrect information... dunno. Probably would be argued that it is similar to reading a forum post of incorrect information or picking the wrong book to research a topic. Kinda on you if you're doing the research.

jasmes··on Superbacked (secrets management) is now free
You really should use a law firm to manage anything you want passed on after you die.

Trying to come up with your own solution to this is a very "roll your own auth" approach to such an important thing.

jasmes··on Games
Quite.
jasmes··on Merry Christmas
<3
jasmes··on What's the best project management tool you have ever used?
A whiteboard and post-its.

Not being sarcastic.

jasmes··on $250 remaining of L&D budget – what to spend on?
You could poke around with Harvard's product dev/strat sim thing: https://hbsp.harvard.edu/product/7701-HTM-ENG

If you wanna try a bunch of topics you can check out Brilliant.org.

jasmes··on The Corporate Transparency Act (CTA) Deserves More Attention on HN
You have a sovereign citizen vibe to your whole wall of text style of "ask" post.

Very odd.

jasmes··on Ask HN: What nascent tech are you interested in?
The Library of Congress is doing a lot of work in this area that web-dwellers tend not to notice. I'd like to see them get more money and more compute to start a non-curated digital archive mission.

I'm sure the five eyes intelligence community has archives of everything ever, so maybe someday they'll be able to open source the older stuff on a rolling basis.

jasmes··on Ask HN: Recommend a sci-fi movie I can watch on the new year's eve
I always watch The Matrix on NYE. The ending just makes me feel like "Alright, bring it on New Year." It is the greatest movie of all time.

Don't watch Inception, if it hits you like it hit me it is emotionally debilitating and you'll be sad until February. Tenet is cool.

Ex Machina is unsettling but good.

"Devs" is a short series that is Ex Machina-esque in feel. Weird but good.

The 5th Element is best for beer drinking fun NYE.

jasmes··on Ask HN: How does programming affect your emotional state?
I've actually noticed some things make me disproportionately upset.

If I hit a wall working on coding logic, I kind of get annoyed and take a short break and come back and try some more.

If I'm doing _anything_ involving databases and API calls I get actually ANGRY when something doesn't work.

My theory: Explaining logic in syntax feels natural, since we do it talking to each other all the time.

Exchanging information in structure feels unnatural, since we don't do it in interpersonal communication. If we're talking about a subject we don't have to first define a schema and endpoints. Our brains do all that automatically.

Imagine trying to use migrations and API routes to represent the memory access, changes in data, and relation mapping our minds do when studying new subjects or learning new information about old topics.

I HATE DATABASES.

jasmes··on Providing decent living for 8B people requires only 30% of current resources use
So if somehow the USA was gung-ho for this kind of thing, all we'd need is peace and a spirit of communal sharing in places like East and Central African nations, Pakistan, Kashmir, India, Palestine, Israel, rural China, Russia, Ukraine, the Balkans...

...oh right. So we'd have to go and "induce" communal sharing using our military. So lots of people would die in the name of an authority asserting that everyone will share everything, except the resources involved in killing, because then we couldn't make sure everyone shares. So we don't share those resources.

...hey wait this scenario is ringing a bell.

jasmes··on Iwantmydomain.com randomly refunded all of my domains and locked me out
Unpopular opinion: use AWS for domain stuff. They're not more expensive than other registrars or DNS services and are very, very reliable/consistent.
jasmes··on Ask HN: How do you manage the risk of losing access to your email address?
I think the idea was more like... if you can afford a RAID6 NAS at home you can afford Backblaze so don't be silly and get some offsite redundancy going.
jasmes··on Ask HN: How do you manage the risk of losing access to your email address?
Honestly man... just go with AWS+Cloudflare. Get a .com TLD from Route53 (the AWS domain name management experience is actually really good) optionally put it behind Cloudflare, and set up Fastmail.

I really wouldn't worry about having your domain pulled due to "fake abuse reports." If you follow the TOS and pay your bill you're fine. Amazon would look at a false abuse report, then look at your domain, see it is being used for a personal email server and toss out the report. As far as payment goes, just set up auto-billing.

Cloudflare is a necessary evil type of company but they specialize in countering malicious activity. They're good at it. They also offer a service that lets you use a domain name to forward to another email address (like a gmail) so if something happened to your Fastmail you could quickly set up a fallback to keep your domain receiving email.

These are US based companies with more money and power than a lot of countries. The internet is built on them.

They can be relied on for personal email.

jasmes··on Algorithmic Music Generation with Python
Music is a strong word for the contents of those tracks.
jasmes··on Private, Secure and Uncensorable Messaging over a LoRa Mesh (2022)
You live in the Western world buddy. You're not going to jail for playing with mesh network gadgets and Twitter isn't going anywhere. There will be the threat of a huge fine for non-compliance, Twitter will threaten to leave the market, users (voters) will freak out, politicians will be like "Crap I'm gonna lose my job" a wrist slap will ensue and we'll all move on.

You guys should really campaign to get real freedom of speech like... properly on the books. Dunno why that isn't a thing.

jasmes··on Zed Editor automatically downloads binaries and NPM packages without consent
I've been using Sublime more and more lately when I'm not in a JetBrains IDE. I can't feel a difference between it's speed and Zed's on my machines. If I could get Supermaven in it I'd SWITCH completely.
jasmes··on If Carpenters Were Hired Like Programmers
Excellent.
jasmes··on [dead]
Agreed. Five eyes law enforcement is already all over crypto; can’t imagine they’d go easier if it became geopolitically influential.
jasmes··on [dead]
I’m not sure I understand the argument. Is he saying crypto will be viable as an alternative to traditional reserve currencies once stable coins are actually stable? I’m a little confused.

Either way, we’re gonna burn this planet down before the money runs out. A process accelerated by crypto mining. cough

jasmes··on Most people don't realize how much progress we've made on climate change
It isn’t the worst thing in the world to occasionally take a moment to be like “okay… we made some progress. Cool.”

As long as people know we have a whole lot more to do shrug is it coping or just stress management?

It can be fatiguing to perpetually feel screwed.

jasmes··on 'Project UnLonely' offers a road map to create connections and combat loneliness
It sounds a lot like they’re finding a very inefficient way to open local bars that host open mic nights.
jasmes··on Ask HN: How often do you switch jobs?
Depends a lot on whether you’re transitioning between different roles and work styles when you go to a new company.

I think there is a bit of a glorification of being outside your comfort zone amongst tech workers, and a lot of FOMO about staying put simply because it is technically possible to be hugely rewarded for taking career risks. However unlikely.

IMO if you’re secure in a job that you enjoy and you like the culture there… that’s a perfectly valid way of being employed.

You mention not growing as fast being a concern — growing towards what? More pay, more influence, more skills? It’s a question worth examining when talking about this.
