Hiring: Product Manager

Our mission at TrueVault is to help companies protect and manage personal data they've collected. We believe that if we make it easy for companies to protect personal data, they'll actually do it and we are all better for it :)

We recently started working on a brand new product and we are looking for a product manager to lead it.

If you believe protecting personal data is important and that you are excited to work on a small and nimble product team, sent us an email: careers+pm@truevault.com

Hi HN,

I’m Jason from TrueVault (YC W14), and I’m excited to share our new product, TrueVault Atlas (https://www.truevault.com/products/truevault-atlas), a data protection solution that eases the daily grind of GDPR compliance tasks through automation.

TrueVault Atlas is unique because it can link personal data across internal and external systems and recognize personal data in natural language, unstructured formats. Meaning, we can find:

- Stray payment information in Salesforce

- Locate personal data, like names and phone numbers in any Google Drive doc

- Link personal data spanning multiple systems to the right data subject.

Built on top of a powerful indexing engine, TrueVault Atlas offers a real-time summary of all personal data stored across all systems, and our continuous compliance monitoring detects irregularities and anomalies instantly. We also automated data deletion and data export so companies can confidently respond to GDPR’s data subject requests, instead of wasting valuable developer time fulfilling these requests manually.

We built this because we learned growth-stage businesses have been diverting resources away from their primary charter, growth, to fulfilling time-consuming compliance tasks — sometimes completing a single data subject request can take upwards of 20 minutes from the workday. When companies receive between 20 and 200 requests per month, time allocation to compliance tasks will slow growth.

TrueVault Atlas is always running in the background, providing continuous compliance monitoring, anomaly detection, and automatic data subject request processing.

TrueVault's main goal is to help companies continue to grow quickly while securing customer privacy and maintain compliance with new privacy laws. We started with TrueVault Safe, a purpose-built data store for storing PII that is an essential tool for HIPAA compliance. Now, we've been building out a library to help companies learn more about GDPR. You can learn more about TrueVault Atlas and our plans for the future in Dark Reading (https://www.darkreading.com/risk/compliance/truevault-launch...).

If you have questions about how TrueVault Atlas works (technical and otherwise), ask us below. Some of our developers have promised to keep an eye on this thread to help answer any questions that come up.

jason_wang··on Launch HN: Station (YC W18) – One place for all your web apps
I have been using Station for ~6months now. Fantastic product! The biggest win for me is I no longer have to hunt down which tab has email app and which tab has the calendar cap.
jason_wang··on Circular Runways [video]
How would a circular runway affect inbound emergency aircrafts?

My intuition tells me that a straight runway would be less burdensome on the flight crew. You set up for your approach then you can go back to dealing with the issues at hand.

jason_wang··on Circular Runways [video]
Most commercial aviation airports (Class-B and Class C) separate commercial and general aviation traffic. The landing speed difference along (let along the camber as you suggested) make it impossible to stagger 7x7 traffic with general aviation traffic.
jason_wang··on One month after launch
Collecting data, including how much your customers value your product, is so important. This is a great way to collect that data.
jason_wang··on Ask HN: Who is firing?
Before posting, double check your severance agreement. It's common to have a non-disparagement (no bad mouthing) clause in it.

jason_wang··on Show HN: TrueVault (YC W14) SDK for iOS – HIPAA compliance made easy for iOS apps
Actually HIPAA is pretty strict on application and infrastructure security. HIPAA's Security Rule has 3 main sections: Administrative Safeguards, Technical Safeguards and Physical Safeguards.

Administrative Safeguards = basically encompasses what you described. Technical Safeguards = encryption, authentication, authorization, audit control, etc. Physical Safeguards = media (e.g., HD) disposal/reuse, data backup/restore, access control and validation procedures, etc.

TrueVault handles Technical and Physical Safeguards. Companies like AccountableHQ.com does a great job taking care of Administrative Safeguards for their customers.

What is TrueVault?

TrueVault is an off-premise, secure data store that developers use to make their applications immediately secure and HIPAA compliant. TrueVault stores healthcare data from mobile health apps, wearable devices and even genomic research so that our customers don’t need to spend their precious time worrying about security, performance and scalability. More than just a database as a service, TrueVault’s proprietary technology allows us to secure our customers' data better than anyone else can (hint: think encryption and global scale slice distribution).

Our mission is to provide the simplest, most secure way for web apps, mobile apps and even wearable devices to store sensitive data. Simple and secure access and storage to people’s most personal and private information is a huge challenge. That's why we are looking for incredible people (like you perhaps?) to join us.

Who is TrueVault?

TrueVault is a Y Combinator graduated startup based in SoMa San Francisco. We have an incredible group of investors including Paul Buchheit, Mark Pincus, and Bill Tai who have invested more than $3 million dollars because they deeply believe in our mission. We are a group of engineers passionate about data security, API performance and building products that developers like us love to use. We are looking for a handful of engineering MacGyvers to join our founding team.

Why Join TrueVault?

Because at TrueVault, you will have the opportunity to work in arguably the biggest market opportunity of this coming decade, improve the collection, portability and security of really critical data, and push the envelop of data portability forward. You’ll work on things that haven't been done before. Plus you’ll get to choose what you want to work on and develop products that your peers will rely on and love using.

If you want to work at a place that values "getting things done" more than "working the startup hours" talk to us. If you take pride in what you do and care about the people who use the product you’ll find people just like you here. If you want to open source and share what you’ve built with the world at TrueVault you can. But most importantly, if you want to work with other incredible minds and welcome the challenges of doing things that’ve never been done, then we want you to join us. If you are passionate about security, performance and scalability, TrueVault might be just what you’re looking for.

jason_wang··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2014)
If you are a hacker/developer/engineer and you are passionate about data security, email your resume and a link to your GitHub profile to: jobs+hacker@truevault.com

Why is our job posting so short? We don’t want to waste your time with fluffy marketing mumbo jumbo. We rather tell you why we are so passionate about our mission over the phone.

Cheers,

The TrueVault team.

jason_wang··on Ask HN: What is the difference between a junior and senior developer?
To me, the differences between a Jr. and a Sr. Dev are the experiences gained from getting burnt by bugs, quick estimates, production issues, etc.

Essentially the number of battle scars.

jason_wang··on Was Y Combinator Worth It?
I can say unequivocally entering YC is one of the best decisions I have ever made both personally and for my business.

I'll let others debate the monetary economics of YC and just say that the YC network effect is the most under-rated aspect of YC. Both the W14 batch mates and the YC alums from past batches have been amazing in terms giving us strategic and tactical advices. This aspect of YC simply can not be ignored.

jason_wang··on Correlate Bitcoin prices with anything
Precisely why Kimono's Web Scrapper as a Service is so awesome!
jason_wang··on Y Combinator’s New Head
You should read the book: The Aviators: Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh, and the Epic Age of Flight by Winston Groom.

All three extraordinary individuals grew up in near poverty conditions with conservative minded parents. They turned out alright.

Don't dispare. Nothing is futile. You control your own destiny now.

jason_wang··on Anonymity vs. Real Identity
Unfortunately a subset of the population likes to hide behind their anonymity and act nasty to others.
jason_wang··on How YC Companies Found Employee #1
I used to have the "trial period" mentality even though I didn't have an answer for the "that's starting out on the wrong foot" skepticism.

But recently, a smarter-than-me CEO shared his hiring practice and he has won me over. He proposes: hire the candidate as a full-time employee and offer the candidate the salary/equity package as if the candidate has achieved his full potential. Then, if the candidate works out as expected, then everything is well. But on the other hand, if the new hire turns out to be sub-par, it would be a lot easier for you to let him or her go. Because it'll simply be too expansive to keep a sub-par employee around at the compensation package you offered.

I think this is a great implementation of the hire fast and fire fast philosophy.

jason_wang··on Why I, Conan O’Brien, Turned Down The Microsoft CEO Job
Up voted. So Funny.
jason_wang··on Show HN: Abacus – Killing The Expense Report
I've been using Expensify for 2+ years and I just started using Abacus. The core value proposition of the two products are significantly different.

Expensify makes the "old school" expense/reimbursement process easier. Expensify lets me collect my receipts, fill out electronic expense reports, submit such reports to my supervisor at the end of each month, wait for his approval, then wait for the finance dept's approval, then wait another 15 days for the deposit. I was a big fan of Expensify because they still made my life easier. But to me, Expensify improves on a pretty awesome dredful process.

Abacus introduces a whole new expense/reimbursement paradigm that focuses on "now". As a user of Abacus, I know if I put in my expense as it happens, I'll get reimbursed right away. This really motivates me to do my expenses now rather than put it off until the end of the month (which also means I'm less likely to lose a receipt).
