I don't think this would be too difficult to write in vim, which has built-in auto-complete functions.

Also, py2exe is reliable and not that difficult to set up, but py2app is a bit of a pain. The resultant .app directories are also pretty big. My game is 6.5mb in Windows, and 32mb in OS X.

Also, I understand that some people (including me) do have fun tinkering with low level details and tiny optimizations, but when you're making a small game with a small (even solo) team, these tasks tend to work against making a good game.

LOVE2D is a joy to work in. It really is fun, it makes particle effects and physics and sound easy. The community is awesome.

I have been working, since September, on my senior project in Pygame. It isn't fun to work in. The documentation is great, but the community seems dead. Things are not easy in Pygame. Distribution is especially painful, with py2exe and py2app and setuptools. I've had a lot of trouble getting certain sounds to play. I would not recommend it.

Really, go with LOVE2D or Flixel or even Flash if you want to make games in a high level language. Not only that, but if you want to have _fun_ making a game, and not get bogged down in low-level details.

I would not recommend Pygame.

Yeah, this is funny, there is novelty here, etc. A story counting profanities in source code/commits/etc. pops up every now and then.

I've found that the only real profanity in a source code comment is "HACK".

Markdown is a good start, the minimal syntax is nice to look at, and it could be poweful with an inline scripting language to define macros (Ruby, Python, Lua).

I read an article a while back that said after the engineer that wrote GOAL left the company, they stopped using it and went back to pure C++ or something.

I could rant about a few things that bug me, but please let 2.8 bring a single-window UI. That would confirm to me that they're slowly getting towards something more usable.

I've been using this zsh function for a year or two:

It usually emits 72 dashes, so that I can stay within that margin (manually, heh). Edited to not break HN. The '##' is because I habitually markdown format everything.

As a vim user, I very much lament the fact that there's no good way to run an interactive shell or REPL in vim. The screen hack, Conque, the vim-shell patch, etc., don't match Emacs' REPL functionality.

Yep. This kind of stuff can also be done with vimscript, python, or ruby, but macros are short and terse and easy to write. Vim even allows you to record your keypresses and save them to a macro.

Why is it that these are a mystery to most command-line users? Any linux documentation that would be useful to intermediate users, like this article, is scattered across the internet. Even published books don't seem to cut it, and man pages are often too terse and dense to be readable. Is there a thorough, concise linux documentation that I don't know about?

I agree. In such a small font it would be easier to make n, m, and w look unique than N, M, and W.

I wouldn't say your font is completely readable, but each character is unique, so learning to read it would almost be like learning a new alphabet. Perhaps then one could read it fluently.

After working on it, can you easily read text in your font?

I've tried to write games in a pure FP style in Scheme, and, like Hague, found that the difficulty is in keeping track of state in a sane and efficient way.

I suspect that Haskell's monads are a solution. Can someone with Haskell experience attest to this?
