jdgoesmarching··on LLM Voice
Sorry to single you out, but it’s surprising that this is such a consensus opinion around here. If an LLM isn’t giving me exactly what I need in the format I want, I tweak skills or system prompts until it does.

These aren’t deep AI hustle bro hacks, it’s literally just editing some text. If a big part of your day is reading AI-generated words, slap something together to make it do words gooder.

jdgoesmarching··on A farewell to Arc browser
That’s neat, but I don’t understand in what world I would migrate to a browser made by the people who just killed their browser after promising it would be maintained indefinitely. Especially after being bought by Atlassian, who has an almost perfect track record of ruining or sunsetting nearly every acquisition.
jdgoesmarching··on Qwen3.8-27B on the iPhone 18 Neural Engine at 15–70 tok/s (1.5 bpw)
Note that the model discussed in this article isn’t available in this app running on the phone. Still, it has some good local options like Gemma 4 and can link to the desktop LM Studio app which is cool.
jdgoesmarching··on Figma restricts MCP access to whitelisted clients, excluding Pi
If you’re whining about how another company gets away with user-hostile behavior that you’re emulating, you’ve lost the plot.
jdgoesmarching··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
I swear only Apple brings out comments where people will insinuate a whole nefarious conspiracy over phones being sold in different colors.
jdgoesmarching··on How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been?
I didn’t even see the OP comment as a criticism of his analyses, just that he likes to do this rhetorical trick of dropping in numbers that are, at best, tangential to his point to prop up the argument’s credibility. Sometimes he does this in the middle of a real financial analysis which is even more maddening and confusing.
jdgoesmarching··on Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1
All the benchmarks in the world don’t matter if the subscription forces you into a walled garden of slopcoded apps. I’ll stick with Codex and, increasingly, open source SOTA models.
jdgoesmarching··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
This is vibe psychology. I owe my entire career to a short attention span that drives me to constantly learn about new ideas, technologies, and hobbies.
jdgoesmarching··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
I was being glib because “attention span” is a poorly defined concept that people are more interested in deriding than understanding, as you demonstrate with your comment that we don’t need science to know that it’s bad. I’m specifically criticizing the tendency to ascribe virtue to tediousness while passing it off as psychology.

After a lifetime of having to prove that my ADHD doesn’t make me a drag on society, call me skeptical of people who insist they know what makes a brain objectively worse than another based on vibes. It’s one thing to discuss the impact of tuning an algorithm to be addictive, it’s another to make a claim that a preference for one form of media over another is a Problem.

Ironically, I’m a pretty heavy reader and find it funny that people treat reading like some paragon of mental discipline when it’s just the media that I find stimulating. I absolutely have a much shorter “attention span” than most people who primarily consume short form video.

jdgoesmarching··on Watching TikTok and Instagram deactivates the cognitive control network: Study
I’d posit that we just puritanically glorify anything perceived as difficult, regardless of the correlation with “intellect.” I’m fine not having the same attention span as people who had to less stuff to do hundreds of years ago.
jdgoesmarching··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
Marketing, like every other functional part of a business, requires technology and engineers. This has nothing to do with fear, you just don’t respect non-engineering work as critical to running a business.
jdgoesmarching··on Stripe will reportedly acquire OpenRouter for $7B+
AWS Bedrock doesn’t even try to stay on top of new open source models or their API capabilities. We’ve also run into also kinds of frustrating issues rate limiting and slowness issues. GCP is probably the best alternative now that they have actual spending caps, I believe a lot of Openrouter models are run on GCP.

The other popular option is something like LiteLLM, which just has a major vulnerability that left a lot of big corps exposed. After spending a year trying to fight this battle, I’ve decided OpenRouter is worth their cut (and maybe more but don’t tell them).

jdgoesmarching··on Qwen 3.8 27B
Lacking world knowledge is fine for me, I rarely want to rely on the model’s training anyway when there are plenty of great search options to integrate with.
jdgoesmarching··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
I thought the purpose of coding was to produce software, but apparently every action I take should be evaluated on how well it achieves arbitrary brain calisthenics.
jdgoesmarching··on AI Agent – TRMNL
Yeah, my interest in giving money to this guy vanished after learning about this. It’s not like whipping up some eink dashboards is a huge imposition in the AI era for anyone nerdy enough to want this in the first place.

Afaik there’s never been any apology or statement, just a careful scrubbing after this started making its way around nerd spaces.

Edit: Sheesh, I was only familiar with the transphobic remarks. This guy is a lot worse than I thought.

jdgoesmarching··on Alibaba to ban Claude Code in workplace over alleged backdoor risks, source says
“For the good of humanity we must protect what I’m working on at the expense of others because it’s super important.”

As frustrating as the anti-AI crowd can be, I see why they end up that way when the valley is full of opinions like this.

jdgoesmarching··on Please stop the AI confidence theater
Elena is one of those people who was loudest about AI on other channels and now she writes this when, as you say, there’s a demand for articles like this.

It’s marketers doing marketing all the way down.

jdgoesmarching··on There are no instances in ATProto
All the nitpicking in this thread is missing the forest for the trees. You know what’s really bad for decentralization? The rest of the world living on fully centralized apps mostly belonging to one of 3 billionaires with no public protocol in sight.

ATProto making some idealistic compromises to improve the protocol as a product is a more effective half-court shot at the winning users from the oligarchy of apps than AP will ever be with its current design.

There’s a lot of talent in this community that could be spent building an ecosystem around the protocol far more likely to make a dent in social media centralization, but we’re stuck letting perfect be the enemy of the good.

jdgoesmarching··on Apple Foundation Models
The important part is Apple rebranding “OpenAI-compatible API” to “language model protocol” and I think we should all rally around this immediately before we’re cursed with that awful tongue twister.
jdgoesmarching··on Apple WWDC 2026 Livestream
If it were lighter with a better FOV I’d buy it at the current price. Apple isn’t doing metaverse, they’re doing computer with a 3D monitor and I don’t think it’s a bad move to have the ecosystem in place as the tech improves and makes a mass market product more viable.
jdgoesmarching··on The Public Should Own Half of the Big A.I. Companies
This comment really drives home the effective propaganda of “publicly owned” as a term.

Concentrated ownership of the wealthy is not synonymous with “the public.” You are very literally arguing for plutocracy over democracy.

jdgoesmarching··on Headway Therapy Patients Forced to Scan Their Faces to Keep Getting Care
Every user of Headway is required to submit to this, regardless of medication status, or they lose access to the platform (and their therapist).

HN has come a long way if we’re considering it a nothing burger that sending scans of your face to a 3rd party verification company is required to not lose access to your healthcare provider.

jdgoesmarching··on Danish Pension Blacklists SpaceX over 'Catastrophic Governance'
Tech bros reinvent autocracy
jdgoesmarching··on Tech CEOs are apparently suffering from AI psychosis
It’s a real phenomenon that gets lazily slapped onto anyone using AI poorly.
jdgoesmarching··on Building Pi with Pi
I love Pi, but it’s pretty distasteful to write off ongoing debates in a separate field than your own (philosophy, particularly theory of mind) as “AI psychosis,” which ironically has its own experts working to understand it as dangerous phenomenon that extends much further than trivial anthropomorphism.

I share your dislike of the industry’s marketing, but this is coming off as more petulant than the reasonable skepticism you seem to be aiming for.

jdgoesmarching··on Building Pi with Pi
Not in conversation, but if I were working in the auto industry and exclusively referred to cars this way it would sound extremely juvenile.
jdgoesmarching··on Jira Is Turing-Complete
The funny thing is that Atlassian themselves uses “custom fields” so it’s not even clear which are actually org-specific. The new JSM uses a lot of them, for example. It smells like things got so convoluted internally that even first party features are just velcro’d on top.
jdgoesmarching··on DeepSeek makes the V4 Pro price discount permanent
If you think heavily subsidizing AI models isn’t financially viable, I have some bad news for you about US AI companies.

Deepseek has made some incredible advancements in model efficiency, and more importantly actually publishes those advancements so everyone can benefit from them.

jdgoesmarching··on DeepSeek makes the V4 Pro price discount permanent
More likely? US tech leaders have been fully capitulating to the surveillance state for over a decade. Why do I care what China does with my data? I don’t live in China and never plan to.

The tech bro threat model has always been pure jingoism and xenophobia. Ironically, the worst thing a Chinese company has done with my data is sell Tiktok to an American technofascist.

jdgoesmarching··on Colorado Amended SB051 (Age Verification Bill) to Exclude Open Source Projects
I know this is attached to a stupid bill, but I really like the general idea of special carve outs for open source projects.
