jdxcode··on Rent controls have split housing in Berlin into two distinct markets
"I'd like to move out of my rent-controlled apartment in SF because my job is in Mountain View, but I don't want to walk away from this rate."
jdxcode··on How an Anti-TypeScript “JavaScript developer” like me became a TypeScript fan
assuming you meant

  let myColor: Color | undefined;
I don't understand what the problem is. Native JS would require you to define the starting scope of the variable (unless you're relying on global scope!).

Then you declare what the type is: Color or undefined. The state of the variable can be one of two things. Perhaps I've been writing TS for too long but I think I'm missing the problem here.

jdxcode··on How an Anti-TypeScript “JavaScript developer” like me became a TypeScript fan
that's an odd take considering the article is comparing JS/TS which have an identical amount of curly brackets
jdxcode··on How an Anti-TypeScript “JavaScript developer” like me became a TypeScript fan
Agreed. A senior engineer should know when they don't understand something and keep an open mind about it rather than rejecting it outright.

If this article started with legitimate reasons for not wanting to adopt TS it would be different. "It is hard for people to learn" is actually a legit reason but "I don't understand it" is probably not!

That doesn't imply all new things are good or that senior engineers need to understand all new things either. I think there is some confusion about this.

Skepticism !== reject everything without grokking.

jdxcode··on How do I make newer Unity games backwards-compatible with OS X 10.9 “Mavericks”?
I find it obnoxious to waste time on an OS from 2013, but asking-to-answer is accepted behavior on stackoverflow: https://stackoverflow.blog/2011/07/01/its-ok-to-ask-and-answ...
jdxcode··on Ask HN: Should I pass on a new job because they want me to sign a non-compete?
If you happen to be in California go ahead and sign it, they’ll never be able to enforce it.
jdxcode··on Signal Desktop is corrupting its database
I’m surprised downvoting isn’t even mentioned in the guidelines. Assuming they didn’t want to mention downvoting unless you have enough karma, they could just display the clause for those with downvoting capability.
jdxcode··on Silicon Valley Runs on Saudi (2019)
> We need Saudi oil

How much do we need oil vs wanting to sell them weapons?

jdxcode··on Bill Allowing Big Tech to Form “Techno-Governments” to Be Announced Today
Despite the title, this appears to currently only involve a company called "Blockchains, LLC". I can't see anything involving actual "big tech" companies.
jdxcode··on Actually Portable Executable
I read your comment thinking you were being stodgy, but then I went to the site and had the same reaction.
jdxcode··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
I should mention though that I did re-apply last year and they were much more prompt

jdxcode··on The Framework Laptop
I would say I run into a situation where I dig my RJ45 dongle out of my bag once per year still. Usually if I'm in a different office or trying to fix Wifi or something.

For me the dongle is annoying but probably sufficient.

I've also worked in offices where the Ethernet was better because it didn't require VPN access and was more reliable, but in those situations I plugged it into my monitor rather than directly into the laptop.

jdxcode··on Berkeley may get rid of single-family zoning
Prop 13 is already limited to 2%
jdxcode··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
I had virtually the same experience in 2018. Gave me an offer for less than half I was currently making too.

It crushed me because I found a team that I was unbelievably excited to work with.

jdxcode··on Berkeley may get rid of single-family zoning
> Those who want to live crammed into micro-apartments with 1 tree for every 30 people can.

We can't. That's the problem.

jdxcode··on Berkeley may get rid of single-family zoning
oh I think you're right, I misread
jdxcode··on Berkeley may get rid of single-family zoning
I literally pay 10x as much tax as my next door neighbor in a house with the same value. The schools need to be funded and the cost should be shared far more equally.
jdxcode··on Berkeley may get rid of single-family zoning
How can you hate prop 13 but think rent control is good?
jdxcode··on Berkeley may get rid of single-family zoning
Becoming myopic with the only stakeholders that matter are the current residents has similar problems with corporations that place profits above all else.
jdxcode··on Fry's Electronics is closing all stores

How is Monterrey for tourism? I've always been more interested in what Mexico is for most Mexicans than the typical tourist spots. It seems that Monterrey is the most "metropolitan" city in Mexico.
