jdxcode··on Ask HN: Does anyone find it strange that sport is part of daily news?
Not in the states, national TV almost never has sports. It's entirely politics.
jdxcode··on Kill the Alarm Clock (2017)
Yeah, I think he would say you need very bright light soon after waking, ideally sunlight.
jdxcode··on Ask HN: Does anyone find it strange that sport is part of daily news?
are you arguing for more coronavirus coverage? I don't watch sports but I think we're getting plenty of that.
jdxcode··on Ask HN: Does anyone find it strange that sport is part of daily news?
How much relevance would ANYTHING on local tv (or even national) have in 100 years? That’s a weird bar to hit.
jdxcode··on Clubhouse’s Inevitability
The library was far better when it was DVDs. They didn't have the licensing problems they do now.
jdxcode··on SolarWinds hack was 'largest and most sophisticated attack' ever: MSFT president
Convince me it’s more sophisticated than Stuxnet.
jdxcode··on Clubhouse user IDs, Chatroom IDs are transmitted in plaintext over the internet
Technically you don’t need verified certs to get the encryption

Too much effort to use TLS?

EDIT: I didn’t realize initially this is UDP, but I think there is a similar solution like TLS for TCP

The battery has to weigh a TON: I can’t imagine this being a shadetree job ever.

jdxcode··on Greens: why we eat the leaves that we do (2013)
I feel like (at least modern) Indian cooking uses quite a bit of cauliflower and broccoli
jdxcode··on Making is show business now (2020)
I agree. In my experience maintaining, the work validating a PR is substantially more than writing the initial code as well. There is also a significant maintenance cost that falls on the maintainer after the code has shipped.

In other words, even if your contribution is perfect, it's still probably putting more work on the maintainer than you did yourself.

jdxcode··on New Intel CEO rehiring retired CPU architects
I had a friend that worked for Intel and he had the absolute worst work laptop of anyone I know. I can't recall what it was exactly, but I remember it even had a low tier Intel chip.
jdxcode··on If you want peace, study war
Reminds me of my favorite quote from Mad Men:

> Roger: As my mother used to say, your options were dishonor or war. You chose dishonor, you might still get war.

> Don: That was Churchill.

jdxcode··on Some Tesla Model 3 rear windows shatter spontaneously
Why would a glass repair guy be surprised about broken glass? I know the point here is that it was spontaneous, but if anyone is regularly hearing about spontaneous breakages it would be the people repairing them.
jdxcode··on Some Tesla Model 3 rear windows shatter spontaneously
Considering the other video has the reflection of a palm tree I'd guess it's not a significant contributor.
jdxcode··on Some Tesla Model 3 rear windows shatter spontaneously
Of course it's not normal. Well, unless you park on the street in the mission district.
jdxcode··on Some Tesla Model 3 rear windows shatter spontaneously
My guess is the glass is fine. The panel gaps are probably a symptom of the same problem of general misalignment putting too much strain on the glass.
jdxcode··on Apple’s self-driving electric car is at least half a decade away
I thought the same... 5 years ago was only the iPhone 6S era.

I think it’s referencing some unreliable rumors they were launching this year though

jdxcode··on Why are there so few children’s books set in the suburbs?
You’d need a serious mountain bike to get to the road and once you’d get there it would be incredibly dangerous to ride.

I did still have one but we rarely used it. There wasn’t anyone to see for miles.

jdxcode··on Why are there so few children’s books set in the suburbs?
yeah, I grew up on a farm which is where loads of children books take place. We had to take a car literally everywhere, including our mailbox.
jdxcode··on Time to get excited about the growing Windows on ARM Ecosystem
Perhaps not surprisingly, they didn’t communicate the most obvious reason: Apple Silicon has shown that it’s not only possible, but that there is potentially huge value in desktop Arm.

jdxcode··on Microsoft may be developing its own, in-house ARM CPU designs
That definitely looks like the direction we're headed. Hard to see exactly what Intel's business would be in such a world.
jdxcode··on I Bought Apple Silicon
for under $1000 (after EPP) I'll just trade-in if it came to that
jdxcode··on Cardio fitness notifications are available today on Apple Watch
How long does the battery last for you? I tried this with Pandora once and I felt like it ate up the battery so bad without my phone on me that I wouldn't try it again.
jdxcode··on Cardio fitness notifications are available today on Apple Watch
If you use a mac it can unlock your computer without having to use TouchID/Password. That's a killer feature that almost makes the watch worth wearing even if I used it for nothing else.

I really like using it for runs but I haven't used a Garmin so I can't compare. Seems to work well but I keep my phone on me as well. I've tried going without my phone and using Pandora but it eats up the battery really badly. I don't think you could run for more than an hour or two with everything going. (I have a series 5)

I also use it with Things for checking off todo items, siri very occasionally, sometimes answering quick phone calls, and as a quick way to ping my phone if I can't find it in the couch cushions. These are all pretty minor things but moderately improve my life.

All told it would be a mediocre product I might not even bother to charge and wear every day. That unlocking my computer though is the one thing it does I find helps my life a ton.
