jdxcode··on foo@bar.com
that's what I meant actually—I just forgot it was trailing
jdxcode··on foo@bar.com
if we could go back I wonder if it would be better if we had required a leading dot in domain names ".google.com"
jdxcode··on A Short Story for Engineers
I remember my college professor telling me this story in college. I have a feeling he'd been telling the same story for decades.
jdxcode··on How to properly manage SSH keys for server access
> I've slaughtered more machines than any of you.

Not only is that vanishingly unlikely to be true with this crowd it’s also not at all the kind of rhetoric that they’ll listen to either.

jdxcode··on How to properly manage SSH keys for server access
I imagine basically any form of compliance would require centralizing logs in some form
jdxcode··on Laid Off, Now What?
do they hold any significant influence? I've never heard of either one. I lived in WA state too.
jdxcode··on Laid Off, Now What?
I feel it's odd that you capitalized the "N" in "native". I assume you're not talking about these people[0].

jdxcode··on iOS 14 is available today
Yeah same. I can wear the originals out for a run and it’s not a problem.

Like you it’s worse in my left ear too.

jdxcode··on iOS 14 is available today
Of course. None of them make any difference.
jdxcode··on iOS 14 is available today
I own a pair and they don’t stay in my ears even if I’m sat perfectly still for more than 15 minutes at a time. I really hope they fix this somehow.
jdxcode··on Verizon to buy wireless services provider Tracfone in $6.25B deal
Is Tracfone an MVNO in the US?

EDIT: seems they are. I feel it’s weird for the article to start talking about consolidation among the main 3 providers when an MVNO isn’t really in the same business.

jdxcode··on AirMessage – Android app to interface with iMessage on a Mac
I think characterizing this as having any effect of “propping up” iMessage is laughable. To call it a “terrible idea” is unfair to the project creators. They’re solving a problem people have, they’re not the cause of it.
jdxcode··on In Defense of a Switch
My favorite part of redux is how reducers are really just big switch statements: https://redux.js.org/introduction/getting-started#basic-exam...
jdxcode··on Show HN: Tweek – Fast to-do weekly calendar app
Checkboxes should just be an empty circle unless checked, other than that I love it
jdxcode··on No handshakes. A bad economy. These car salesmen shifted tactics– and succeeded
You can get financing from anywhere. Unless you wanted one of those 0% deals, in which case that’s why you weren’t offered less than MSRP
jdxcode··on Ask HN: What feature did you find after years of using macOS?
Here is mine: https://twitter.com/jdxcode/status/1268208784972951554?s=20

maybe this is better? just discovered it myself but it appears to be open: https://plus.codes/
jdxcode··on [dead]
If what3words wants anyone to bother using it they need to make it an open standard. They have very tight control over the trademark and usage of it.

This PR puff piece didn't even address the issue even though the BBC wrote about it a few months ago: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-49754820

EDIT: I didn't realize this article is from 2019—a month before the mildly critical article.

it seems logical to me a sophisticated syndicate would run their own tumbler. I'd assume there is some kind of OSS wordpress for mixing out there. And I don't think it'd be that hard to get other people to use it to get liquidity (just offer it as a free service).
jdxcode··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
couldn't you just store your data in append-only fashion?
jdxcode··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
The mixers keep a ledger outside the blockchain, so no—and a well written one wouldn't store any logs. You could possibly know that someone used a mixer but you wouldn't be able to track from the blockchain where the money came from. It could've come from 1000s of other transactions all with different amounts—none that would trace back to the source funds wallet.
jdxcode··on US travel firm $4.5M ransom negotiation open chat
yes, and it proves GP's point about crypto enabling crime. It's trivial to implement.

It's just a ledger kept outside so there is no link between the money going in and the money coming out.

jdxcode··on Why do U.S. coins seem to be in short supply?
can't they just take the coins from the laundry machines and put them back into the coin machine?
jdxcode··on Npmjs reducing salaries for employees up to 50% post acquisition by GitHub
> I don't know him personally, but from what I heard, Mr. Warner is most likely extremely good at understanding and planning complex distributed software systems.

I worked under him as an IC for a few years at Heroku. I'd certainly agree with that statement.

jdxcode··on Npmjs reducing salaries for employees up to 50% post acquisition by GitHub
I feel the likely outcome is that you just wouldn't get a raise for a while
jdxcode··on Don't use ENV variables for secret data (2017)
they wind up in your bash history this way too
jdxcode··on Contrarian view on closing files
In Unix files are pointers to pointers so you can have multiple files pointing the the same thing (hardline).

You can’t do this in Windows and that’s also why you can’t delete in-use files or directories with files inside

jdxcode··on Contrarian view on closing files
It’s because the file system doesn’t have inodes. It’s nothing to do with Explorer
