jeffbarg··on Announcing Polars 1.0 (Blog Post)
It's interesting that they are explicitly not committing to holding the API constant (which seems quite common & expect for a "1.0"). I generally like that philosophy, but I wonder if it will lead to some unexpected whiplash in the future for people now expecting the core to be stable.
jeffbarg··on Ask HN: How to do simple heartbeat monitoring?
Believe you can do this in Signoz: https://signoz.io/docs/monitor-http-endpoints/
jeffbarg··on Ask HN: What do you use to build auth?
This is very cool. I'm familiar with CASL for authz which also has a Prisma integration; is the main benefit of Cerbos over that the built-in logging?
jeffbarg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (April 2022)
Avenue (YC W21) | https://avenue.app/ | Full-stack Software Engineer / Backend Software Engineer (Typescript / Javascript / React) | NYC / New York City | Full-Time

Avenue is building the observability platform for operations teams (think Sentry/PagerDuty but for ops). We are hiring early full-stack engineers to help scale the next generation of ops-driven companies. Come join our NYC-based team!

We are a team of 8 in NYC backed by Y Combinator, Accel, Elad Gil, Lachy Groom, and many other great partners.

Our main product is a web app and worker cluster built using Next.js & React. We build our components with Tailwind (https://tailwindcss.com), and we use hooks & react-query for state management. Our backend is a Node.js / Express app. We use Redis and Postgres for storage, and we use Prisma (https://prisma.io) as our data access layer. Our infrastructure is built on Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS.

As an early team member, you will get a chance to set the foundations of our engineering culture. You will help articulate our engineering principles and help set the long-term roadmap.

We're looking for strong engineers with many of the following:

  * 3+ years of full-time software engineering experience
  * Experience building full-stack web apps (you've owned & built features from start to finish before)
  * Extensive knowledge of Typescript, React, and Node.js
  * You're product-minded, you get a lot done, and you have high conviction in what you do.

jeffbarg··on Ask HN: Solo-preneurs, how do you DevOps to save time?
We use https://porter.run. Pretty great.
jeffbarg··on Apple Watch Series 7
IMO this is a tacit acknowledgement that besides the Series 3 to Series 4 upgrade, all of the yearly watch upgrades are mostly minor.

jeffbarg··on Launch YC S21: Meet the Batch, Thread #6
Such an important problem - I really hope you become the new standard for companies' data. The number of times I've seen complex, undocumented queries...
jeffbarg··on Launch HN: Keyri (YC S21) – Secure smartphone-based passwordless authentication
Super interesting re: China. Curious if there are open source projects/libraries they build on or if most of that is built internally.
jeffbarg··on Launch HN: Keyri (YC S21) – Secure smartphone-based passwordless authentication
It's shocking to me that authentication the way WhatsApp / Discord do it is not a) commonplace and b) productized for developers. This feels like an obvious first step solution IMO - best of luck with the launch.

Edit: having the standalone Keyri app work for apps that don't have a dedicated mobile app of their own feels like it would drastically increase the market size here. Auth0 / Cognito are woefully unequipped for most web app's authentication needs, so there's still a huge opportunity there.

jeffbarg··on Ask HN: Which tools/services have your favorite UI/UX?
https://linear.app/ has beautiful UI with super smooth animations. In general, I think "command+K" command-line interfaces for user-facing tools is a huge step up (Superhuman, Linear, etc..).

jeffbarg··on Launch HN: Infracost (YC W21) – open-source cloud cost estimator
I'm sure I'm not the only one who's accidentally incurred a $1K+ charge on a personal AWS account because of confusing pricing docs. This is awesome - looking forward to using this ASAP
jeffbarg··on Launch HN: Humanloop (YC S20) – A platform to annotate, train and deploy NLP
Humanloop is such a great name for an AI platform :) Congrats on the launch!
jeffbarg··on Ask HN: Have you abandoned Next.js for another front end framework/library?
Very few downsides to Next.js generally. I’d say for smaller projects I really love leveraging Gatsby’s plugin system (specifically the image transforms), but it’s not as useful for anything dynamic where Next.js comes out ahead.
jeffbarg··on Ask HN: What are your go to SaaS products for startups/MVPs?
Recent YC company that does SaaS reviews for startups: https://satchel.com

Not associated with them, but I found their comparisons helpful!

jeffbarg··on Neil Ferguson's Imperial model could be the most devastating software mistake
My understanding of the frustration is that while the model is deliberately stochastic, there was still unexplained non-determinism in the model that had to be fixed (and still persists). If the randomness isn't fully explained by pre-determined seeds, I'd call that an error.
jeffbarg··on Show HN: Hacker UI – a React design system for developers
Looks great!

Reminded me a lot of BaseWeb (https://baseweb.design/) when I first looked at the components. But this looks a bit lighter-weight to use which makes it more accessible IMO.

jeffbarg··on Show HN: Emauth.io – Free service for Slack-style passwordless login links
I really love the idea of this - lightweight auth is desperately needed in the web ecosystem (Auth0 is close, but a bit too complicated and bloated).

Would be great if the service returned something like a JWT or just a signed copy of the email address verified (potentially with an expiry date). That way you can use the token itself as authentication without making network calls on the backend to verify it on each call. Not saying this is necessarily production-grade security, but could suffice for small projects where ease-of-use is more important than token revocability.

jeffbarg··on Composing better emails
This is one of the benefits of the Amazon writing practice; write up a one-pager on a topic and have a meeting where the first 10-15 minutes are reading the document. Then have a discussion. It's a good way to get to a consensus and it's respectful of everyone's time.
jeffbarg··on Jeremy, I think you'll wan't this job
> "if you want to see the other applicants, you have to upgrade your account and pay $375/mo until you call them to cancel (I know, because I still pay $10/mo to keep my account on pause because I don’t feel like talking to people, and $10/mo is probably less expensive over 2 years than fighting with them to cancel my account is is worth, and they know it… fuckers)."

I hate sites that allow you to subscribe without talking to someone, but don't allow you to unsubscribe without picking up the phone. I'm surprised it's not downright illegal. I've found Privacy.com[1] is a good service for these kinds of subscriptions, because you can just cancel the card to avoid keep getting charged. Not sure if anyone has a better solution.

[1]: https://privacy.com/ (I am not associated with this site, just a user)

jeffbarg··on We’re Updating Our Terms of Service to Better Explain How Facebook Works
Wow, that last one is surprising. I understand that it can be a hard problem to fully delete data if you haven't built systems with that in mind from the start, but isn't that (not deleting backups) a flagrant violation of GDPR regulations?
jeffbarg··on Fuck Hard Work
"This obsession with “hard work” is founded in a pessimistic view of natural state of humanity being lazy loafers. That unless we constantly reinforce the virtue of “hard work”, we’re all just going to slouch on the couch. Nonsense. The drive for creativity and creation is innate."

Of course, but results aren't entirely driven by creativity either -- sometimes you need to put in some work that isn't fulfilling in order to do things you are interested in.

Hard work is definitely overrated, but it does have its place. This just seems like an extreme position in a different direction.
